21.01.2022 New paper from Deakin and Parks Victoria partnership, in Gariwerd (Grampians National Park). Evaluation of camera placement for detection of freeranging carnivores; implications for assessing population changes Led by Hayley Geyle. Paper is open access. ... On average, onroad detectability was seven times higher for cats and three times higher for foxes. Targeting survey effort onroad yielded the greatest power for detecting declines in both species, but our ability to detect smaller declines decreased with decreasing initial occupancy probability. No level of decline was detectable for cats when survey efforts were targeted offroad, while only large declines (>50%) were detectable for foxes (assuming high initial occupancy probabilities). Results suggest that targeting monitoring on roads may be an effective approach for detecting declines in introduced carnivore populations, particularly following management intervention (e.g. lethal control), and in the face of resource limitations. The paper provides a framework that can help assist land managers to make informed decisions, which balance monitoring efforts and resource constraints with sufficient statistical power to assess management objectives.

15.01.2022 Be plastic waste aware. As we move into the warmer months, for those living on the coast, a walk on the beach, bay or river can give you an insight into our increasing addiction to plastic. From bottles, cans, bags, lids, straws, balloons and strings, to discarded fishing gear, these are all a common sight and are a real, increasing threat to our wildlife. This spring, please be aware of how you dispose your plastic waste. By putting it in a council bin or taking it home ...and using your recycling bin, you will be helping our wildlife and their habitat. You will also be helping to keep our natural environments healthy and beautiful! Some simple things you can help our environment further include: . Join in on a local area clean-up day, like Take3 for the Sea or Clean Up Australia Day . Be a responsible fisher person, use biodegradable gear and take your discarded line and rubbish with you . Use council bins provided when enjoying your local or holiday area take your rubbish home, leave only footprints! Every little bit helps our environment. And who knows, by helping to clean up your local area, you could even be saving an innocent life!

06.01.2022 Introducing FAWNA NSW INC; a wildlife sanctuary on the mid north Coast of NSW. Primary carers, Meredith Ryan and her husband, kindly offer their property and ti...me to rescue and rehabilitate a variety of wildlife species as needed, and incredibly took in over 4000 wild animals over the past year. FAWNA are receiving IFAW support thanks to a generous US donor Gina Canine Orphans of the Fires to purchase a new, multi-purpose aviary, allowing them to care for an increased number of flying foxes over the summer, as well as the various bird species that frequently come into care. As a result injured wildlife will now be able to receive on-going care, treatment and rehabilitation from within this safe and versatile resource.
