21.01.2022 MEET TONYA! What do you like doing? I relax in my garden, spending time with my thousands of Bromeliads, yes there are that many. I read for hours and spend time painting and drawing. I adore my 8 grandchildren, and when they spend time with me it is usually chasing the chickens in the garden, painting with nan, or planting or watering vegies. My self-care is sitting on the beach watching the world go by, or a fishing rod in my hands.... Tell us about your program? I work in the Dungog area supporting families with children from birth to transitioning to high school. I provide Parenting support to help parents and carers manage challenging behaviours, and strategies to develop strong healthy relationships. I support the families in Case Work, a Home Visiting Service and Office visits, educational parenting programs including; One Two Three Magic, Triple P Parenting, Circle of Security, Wesley Mission Parenting Young Children 0 8 years, Stretching Your Wings attachment, and the Women’s Wisdom Program. I partner to run Supported Playgroups and a New Parent Program. Coming along to a group parents meet other families and build lovely friendships. What draws you to work with families? I can remember the challenges of being a young mum in a rural community, feeling isolated. I love bringing young families together, meeting each other and the friendships the children build together. I have worked for Wesley Mission for 13 years in this role and I have enjoyed meeting every child, young person and family in my journey as the Family Support Worker in Dungog. What do you do to take care of your mental health? Every night I ask myself ‘what made today count for me’. Mornings I swim or walk reminding me of the fresh air of a new day. When I find my mind is unsettled I paint. When I can, sitting near moving water by the river and ocean, settles my thoughts and calms my mind.

18.01.2022 Young people gathered at the Hive Hub yesterday to watch a very significant film titled Disclosure, a documentary about the depiction of Transgender people on film over history. We paused the film a few times and had some really engaging discussions about the representation of the queer community and how it is changing and how we wish it would change in the future. This is our queer group that meets regularly every Tuesday 4pm-5pm.

16.01.2022 MEET KATE! What do you like doing? I love being outside in nature. Daylight savings is the best because it’s light for so much longer, which means longer days outside. I spend many hours every week trail running with my kelpie, Luna, and my labradoodle, Ollie, and they definitely love it as much as I do. I also do other training sessions through the week like Zuu and Ankorr to stay strong. Spending time with my family and friends is really important to me, and this usually ...involves sharing delicious food or a great Netflix series together. Tell us about your program? I work across two programs; Student Wellbeing in a local primary school, and as one of the Young Healthy Minds workers. As part of Student Wellbeing, I work with young people and their families, from kinder to year 6, to support their education journey and general wellbeing. My other days with the Young Healthy Minds team involves working alongside young people aged 0-18 and their families. I meet with young people at The Hive, or in their homes or schools. We speak about what is going on for them, the challenges they face, as well as the great stuff too. Supporting young people’s mental health and overall wellbeing is what I do, and I feel really privileged to get to spend time with young people every day. What draws you to your work? Young people are resourceful, positive, and so wise! I love learning from them and that happens every week. It’s so important for adults to really listen to what young people are saying because their honesty is refreshing, and they understand themselves the best. I always drive home from work reflecting on the lessons I’ve learned from the young people I’ve worked with that day. And sometimes they are lessons about tik tok. But that’s good too. What do you do to take care of your mental health? Exercise. It makes me a much kinder, calmer person. I try to eat as healthily as I can, and get as much sleep as I need. I find that some kind of routine is beneficial to my mental health, as well as some kind of learning; whether it’s a new hobby, a documentary on television, or education of some sort.

15.01.2022 MEET SOPHIA! What do you love doing? I love painting, camping, listening to hip hop, being underwater, writing poetry, being in naytch and cooking rice.... Tell us about your program? I run the Youth AOD program, which is a program that helps to support young people (aged 12-25) who may need assistance with their alcohol or drug use. I try and use young people’s passions as much as possible when helping with recovery. I work at high schools, through headspace and in our office; The Hive, in Hamilton. What draws you to work with young people? Young people are rad. The young people I work with and know are resilient, smart, empathetic, strong and ready to change the world; who doesn’t want that? I look up to and respect our youth because being young is a tricky time to navigate and in 2020 its only gotten more tricky and kind of weird? And they still show up and grow- its really nice to be surrounded by that type of energy. I also get really good music recommendations, which is a bonus. What do you do to look after your mental health? Movement and being in nature, for me is key. Being creative and processing through painting is also a powerful tool. Finding your people- whether it be your friends or family is also super important to build those strong foundations. We cant do it all by ourselves! Believe me; I once felt sad and tried to remedy it by listening to Radiohead on repeat, by myself and nothing positive came of it.

I know that when I exercise I feel much better both physically and emotionally. I try and eat well and get enough sleep.
