23.01.2022 Australian Sailing - NSW & ACT shows what social distancing will look like on your boat.

23.01.2022 Today we raced the second race of the aptly named Covid Cup in Stockton Bight with a building SSW breeze starting with 10knts and building to gusts of 20knts. Our COVID19 response has seen yachts competing with reduced crew numbers, restrictions on sails permitted to be used, increased sanitisation and enforced physical distancing as much as practicable. Participating in sailing is currently requiring a big effort from our members to be responsible so we can practice CovidS...afe Sailing. Mako was a team to mention today with four out of the five on board 25yrs and under (with the exception of experienced Phil (Bung) Burns on the runners. Our Sailing Manager Jack Buchan took the opportunity to steer the young guns around the course today - demonstrating the young crew’s capabilities strutting their stuff offshore today - second to cross the finish line in their division behind Lumiere. Lumiere (Warwick Miller) crossed the finish line with a convincing lead winning IRC Division, with Schouten Passage (Jan Howard) in second and Commodore Steve Rae’s Marta Jean in third. Lumiere also scored the winning position in PHS Division 1, followed by Uprising Bakery (Andrew Miller) in second and Summer Salt (Tim Gleeson) in third. In PHS Divison 2, Michael McFayden’s new Pronto took first place, with Paloma (Bruce McNair) in second and Nyssa (Mark Smith) in third. For full results, see the event webpage - https://www.ncyc.net.au/sailing/offshore-racing/covid-cup/

23.01.2022 YOUTH LEAGUE The Youth League ended tonight with races 10, 11 & 12 wrapping up the competition. In first place overall with a convincing lead was the Try Hards 2.0 The team, made up... of Thomas Steenson, Luke Sullivan, Darby Jones and Tom Dawson demonstrated their strong boat handling and tactics throughout the competition to write a strong scorecard - winning 10 of the 12 races sailed. In second place, the Full Throttle team was made up of Craig Wright, Sebastian Spencer, Christian Spencer and George Carr. The crew worked on fine tuning their teamwork and boat handling throughout the series. In third place, Damage Report was made up of Griffin Suters, Lennon Sullivan and Rohan Perceval. After joining thr CYCA’s match racing squad over winter, Griffin would have been keen to practice some of the tactics and strategy learnt in the off-season. In fourth place, Harry Miller, Callum Marsh and Jackson Clare missed out on the podium by just a single point on the scorecard! In fact / we presented these guys with the third place prize after accidently discarding the results of the final race tonight. In fifth place, Chelsea Williams joined Waverley Mears and Alice Roberts - after Waverley and Alice completed the recent school holiday OutThere Sailing program. The girls worked together to get their teamwork and boat handling up to speed and happily ended the competition with a 2nd place in the last race today! 18.01.2022 Congratulations to our sailing members for another magical day on the water. Today we raced the Covid Cup Race #3 with a 15knts South-Westerly breeze in Stockton Bight. Marta Jean lead the fleet out of the Harbour, having taken the lead from Scuffy about half-way along.... - - - - In IRC Division, Marta Jean scored the gold, followed by Lumiere and Schouten Passage. In PHS Division 1, Marta Jean claimed another gold, ahead of Lumiere and Mako. In PHS Division 2, Pronto took the winning place, ahead of Scuffy and Scots Wha Hae. - - - - The fleet departed the Harbour and turned North into Stockton Bight, following the beach before turning to sea and reaching out to the Sygna mark. Division 1 sailed two laps offshore and then chased Division 2 who only sailed a single lap. The fleet finished in front of Queens Wharf Brewery with the sun shining down on them and the breeze maintaining 10-12knts all the way up the harbour. We’re back on the water next week for Race #4 kicking off at 11.30am on Sunday.

18.01.2022 NEW SEASON 2020-2021 We proudly declare the new sailing season open for business! For the first race of the season we keep it simple and select an easy race track in Stockton Bight.... Midcoast Boatyard & Marine’s Farr 40 led the fleet around the track today in Good Form with owner Joe de Kock joining the fleet this season. A shipping movement caused disruption near the finish - allowing Lumiere to take the line honours title. Similarly, Michael McFayden’s Pronto set the pace at the front of Division 2 as they raced to Sygna and back again. In IRC Division, Lumiere scored first place ahead of Marta Jean and Good Form. In PHS Division 1, SummerSalt took the win ahead of Lumiere and Mako. In PHS Division 2, Pronto took both line honours and the handicap first place prize ahead of Wonderland and Doris. We’re back on the water next weekend for Race #2 of the Spring Short Ocean Pointscore. For full results, visit the event webpage - https://www.ncyc.net.au//offshore-/short-ocean-pointscore/

17.01.2022 THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW - will be spring! Today mother nature gifted us a warm sun clear skies, flat water and a generous breeze! Could we have picked a better day to race the Winter Passage down to Redhead and Glenrock Lagoon? On advice from Australian Sailing and NSW Government, we have excluded persons residing outside of the Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Maitland and Cessnock LGA's and are no longer offering daily prizes back in the Clubhouse after racing.... In short, we had nineteen boats racing off the coast of Newcastle today - purely appreciating the opportunity to be back on the water. We welcomed Rob Dawes and the team of Indigo, a Marten 49, destined for the Lake when conditions permit. Dawes and the team blitzed their first race at Newcastle by claiming Line Honours as the fastest boat to complete the 21NM passage race. We also welcomed Division 2 contenders Michael Bleakley on "Scaramouch", Robert Logan on "Amelia", and Greg Bolster on "Doris." In IRC Division, Richard Howard returned to Schouten Passage and the team took first place just 16 seconds ahead of second placed Marta Jean (Steve Rae) who were ahead of third placed Good Form (Joe de Kock) back on the water flying the Midcoast Boatyard & Marine banner. In PHS Division 1, Tim Gleeson and the SummerSalt crew took advantage of the offshore westerly and scored first place, just 9 seconds ahead of second placed Marta Jean, with Schouten Passage barely a minute behind them in third place after a picturesque two and a half hour race up and down the coastline. In PHS Division 2, Rebecca Connor and the Wonderland team were rewarded for their work with first place, barely a minute ahead of Bruce McNair's Paloma and Mark Clare's Isabella Blue. We're back on the water in two weeks time with the start of the new sailing season and regular Sunday racing from 1.30pm on Sunday, 13th September.

16.01.2022 YOUTH SQUAD - TRAINING TODAY Since early July, the Youth Squad has been on the water every weekend training and racing in the Force 24s. This years' Squad Structure saw us focus heavily on boat handling as we implemented those skills into fleet racing, and an introduction to match racing.... The squad is scheduled to end at the end of this month with each squad member participating in the offshore NSW Country Yachting Championship aboard NCYC yachts. Today, the Youth Squad took advantage of Sydney-Hobart yacht 'Mako' and braved the wind and the ocean to sail down the coast in a training exercise. While it was a clear and sunny day, the wind at Nobby's did exceed 25knots+ in the gusts! The squad - ranging in ages from 13yrs to 16yrs - met coaches Jack & Felix at 8:30am this morning for a safety briefing onboard the yacht and to rig the sails. They raised the sails near Honeysuckle and continued out of the Harbour before turning South toward Merewether. At Merewether, the boat headed out to sea approximately 2 Nautical Miles and then worked upwind into the 20knts+ westerly until they could almost step off onto Merewether Baths. The team then stuck close to shore as they reached from Merewether to Nobbys and back again - rotating crew roles on each run. Jack summed up their day on the water as "an exciting morning on the water. The squad successfully implemented their Force 24 keel boating skills and applied them on the much bigger Mako, handling the bigger loads on ropes and sails safely." Felix added "We had some fast runs, at over 12knots+ in some of the biggest gusts out there. The squad demonstrated their capabilities today and we're really proud of each of them." From here, the squad is scheduled to participate offshore in the NSW Country Yachting Championships 29/30 August, then they will be looking forward to Daylight Savings when we get the Elliott fleet back in the water for the Youth League in October and the Match Racing Tournament in November.

05.01.2022 WINTER WONDERLAND - Today was the final race of the COVID Cup and, having started the day on a three way tie for first place, we have a winner! After delaying the start for an incoming ship, the fleet raced out the harbour lead by Marta Jean and Schouten Passage out in front of our biggest fleet of the series.... The first rounding mark proved. . . challenging as we saw the first three places spread apart during the rounding, a boat collide with the buoy, and a few boats struggle to get the height to get up and over the buoy. With the sun shining down on the race course, the swell was still big but each wave was spaced out by long periods and was ling and rolling. Perfect conditions for smooth winter sailing! Overall for the series in IRC Division, Schouten Passage claims the victory, followed by Lumiere and Marta Jean. In PHS Division 1, Lumiere takes the winning title followed by Uprising Bakery and Schouten Passage. In PHS Division 2, Pronto (newly added to the NCYC fleet) came out on top, followed by Paloma and Nyssa. - - - - - - - - - - ...and that’s it for the 2019-2020 sailing season! We still have the Breakout Series visiting 9-10 August and the Asahi Regatta 29 & 30 August. We still intend to host an annual presentation night if/when we deem it to be a responsible time to do so.
