25.01.2022 Grandmaster Tsui Sheng Tin . Disciple of GGM IP Man . .

25.01.2022 Happy Birthday!! - Today would be Sigung Chu Shong Tin’s 86th birthday. We are fortunate that his legacy is flourishing and today is the perfect opportunit...y for the CST family to get together and share both personal accounts of the legendary master and also all of our individual experiences with the practice. Your 60+ years of teaching is still bringing us all together and pushing us to reach our full potential. Thank you Sigung, thinking of you today - - #cstfamily #chushongtinwingchun #cstwingchun #chushongtin #master #sigung #gransmaster #wingchun #kungfu #vingtsun #ipman #brucelee #legacy #inspire #dedicate #respect #explore #share #community

24.01.2022 Here is a little clip I have put together, still new to editing videos.

24.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I was hoping to announce that we could resume some training next week but after speaking to the Scouts group they have informed me that aren't able to use the hall at this stage. They will let me know when it will be available. Please try and practice your Siu Nim Tao form if you can. I hope we can get back soon. I'll let you know when I can. Take care. Regards Sifu Greg

24.01.2022 Sifu Mark Spence teaching the palm strike movement from Siu Nim Tao. This was shot at around 9pm at the end of the night; by which time I would have been traini...ng for ~6hrs. Mark had been teaching since 8:30am. Mark's palm strike is extremely jolting and has a jarring effect to it since it hits you right at your centre/spine rather than affecting you through the contact point. You can see how barely any movement is needed to produce a lot of power when sufficiently relaxed and moving from Nim Tao. Unfortunately I had a problem of pushing through the forearm halfway through when it started working; which was annoying me so please excuse my French. And at the end you can see how I start to try to "dig" and my spine distorts as I get ready to push off the ground.

24.01.2022 Here is an old one from the family archives. Chu Shong Tin teaching Chi Sau to his student Jim Fung. This was taken in the 70s at CST's house in Hong kong.

22.01.2022 Many people think that Chu Shong Tin (CST) Wing Chun has a similar engine and application as that of Taiji, but actually this is not correct at all. We do not ...cultivate energy at the Dantien, rather we mobilize it from the tailbone upward through the spine to the top/back part of the brain which CST called the "Nim Tao area" of the brain. Also, we focus on gaining total control of every joint in the body so that we can produce a lot of power (seemingly effortlessly) while resisted at the joint. And of course the concept of triangulation (resulting in the centerline) is a fundemental aspect of Wing Chun, so with the use of NimTao we will be able to utlize our outgoing force in a conical sphere fashion while redirects and strike simultaneousely - which CST highlights in this video as an "opposite" way of in Taiji. In the video a student asks CST "didnt you practice Taiji before?" Apparently he didnt hear him clearly (as he was deaf in one ear) but as his students we all know his past whci is: CST learned Taiji from one of the most famous Kung Fu Sifus in Guangzhou (in the 1940s), Grandmaster Fu (). He very briefly mentioned that he trained with him very casually for a year (as he was forced by his father) when he was a teenager prior to coming to Hong Kong and starting Wing Chun. Years after he began WC and after he attained a level of what he called Nim Tao (mind force), he visited this Sifu who highly praised his ability after CST respectfully touched hands with him to demonstrate his internal Wing Chun ability. He then touched hands with some of the most senior students of Master Fu and demonstrated his ability by asking them to choose any movement from any of their forms as he stopped them and then performed the exact same movement on them (without using the front and back Taiji style of stance) and they couldn't stop him. It should be noted that he was only around 22yrs old at the time which was a few years before Ip Man coined him "King of Siu Nim Tao"... Within the next 60years after this encounter, CST touched hands with many other Taiji and Kungfu masters and practitioners with same results. So when he mentioned that what he did (the internal engine) was different from Taiji, its fare to say that he had enough knowledge and experience of it to say so. Now after his passing, some people have hinted that Nima King has also dabbled in Taiji and does similar stuff, but again this is not the case. Nima has never practiced Taiji and while he has great respect for good Taiji practictioners (as did CST), he is always made it very clear that this method of practice is fundementally different from Taiji.

22.01.2022 The following was written by Marty Anderson about his experience training with Chu Shong Tin in the 1970s.

21.01.2022 A slow-mo look at me working with students on putting their body mass into their hands, rather than trying to hit hard with just their arm. This is something th...at I emphasise a lot, because if you don't believe that you can hit hard, then you will never believe in your own ability to defend yourself. This feeling of "powerlessness" will always be in the back of your mind, and in subtle ways your lack of confidence will be evident to those around you. By connecting to your centre of mass, you can hit much harder than you might think. And as in this video, it is not restricted to hitting "in a straight line" (ie, with the body directly behind the hand travelling forwards towards the target). It always a good test and reminder if students have truly understood the lesson when you wake up the next morning and your chest feels like it was hit by a truck, but as Sifu Derek would always say to me, the lesson doesn't end until the student can do it correctly. Repetition and more repetition will get you the results you desire. See more

14.01.2022 Great pic and article from 1990 of Master Chu Shong Tin and Master Wong Shun Leung.

12.01.2022 The Hidden Power of SiuNimTao -by ChuShongTin My Master Ip Man first started teaching Wing Chun in Hong Kong at the Restaurant Worker’s Union Assoc...iation. At the time I was the secretary of the association, so Master Ip and I had many opportunities to be together. Before I became interested in Wing Chun, I often overheard Master Ip explaining his Wing Chun theories in his classes. Gradually he sparked my interest in the art. It so happened that I had great interest in physics and mechanics; I enjoyed his theories on body structure and power development methods very much. Through my careful analysis, I was convinced that Master Ip’s art was flawless and very advanced. Finally, I decided to follow Master Ip and became his student.Like every beginner in class, I started my journey with SiuNimTao, even though I had already familiarized myself with the form as an observer. It took me little effort to completely learn the basic movements. I then began to wonder about the essence of the form, besides the hand movements. I went to Master Ip and inquired about the meaning of SiuNimTao, especially the non-combative tone in the name. Master Ip replied: This is about "Lop Nim" () --- to establish an idea in the mind. I am sure most of my peers have also heard about this term. Master Ip also added that it required prolonged practice of this form to truly master the essence of Lop Nim. This hidden meaning of Lop Nim really caught my interest. I spent much time analyzing its nature, but could still not grasp the concept. Therefore I decided to drop all my thoughts and simply practiced SiuNimTao whenever I could, day and night. After a long time, I began to see the connection between Lop Nim and the form. I suddenly felt great joy in my Wing Chun training, which fueled my interest in the art further. I became obsessed with the art. Gradually I discovered some powerful but hidden forces within each SiuNimTao movement. All the movements are indeed able to deliver indestructible power, yet they look very soft and graceful. At that moment, the concept of Lop Nim became extremely enlightening and inspiring to me. I finally understood the reason behind it. I summarize this hidden power as a kind of Nim Lik (), the force of an idea; or mind/intent force, where nim is the same idea/intent as in nim tau. In essence, SiuNimTao has two major points: Nim Lik and structure. 1. Nim Lik (force of idea/intent): it stabilizes all Wing Chun movements to form a springy and dynamic combination of body structures. It makes Wing Chun body structure able to sustain great pressure and produce rebound energy. Although there are common terms such as Nim Lik, Qi Gong, Nei Gong or supernatural abilities that are being perceived as some kind of unusual power, here I would only illustrate the concept behind Nim Lik (force of idea/intent). Nim Lik is the power of a highly focused mind. It helps one bring forth chi flow into every part of the body. Everyone should have this kind of power. However, without training, it is very difficult to focus thoughts. SiuNimTao is a great tool to invoke mind focus power. If properly practiced, one can deliver this kind of power at will in every instance. The mind can stay focused even when the structure is adjusting or moving at high speed. So to achieve Nim Lik is the goal of SiuNimTao. Let’s look at a simple example: if a healthy person falls down from a 6 7 feet tall platform unprepared, although he/she lands with both feet, he/she is still likely to injury him/herself. However, if the person is mentally prepared for the fall, his/her feet will automatically recoil and absorb the impact. Also, he/she can only have this reflex if his/her feet are relax. This is an unique attribute of human muscle in its relax state. The springy force on the feet that help the person land safely is a direct result of relax muscles and Nim Lik. Note: according to contemporary scientific findings; when human muscles are in relax state and are moving at steady speed, they can sustain greater pressure than when they are tensed up (using force). It is so amazing that our Wing Chun ancestor Ng Mui was able to make use of this scientific method to design our SiuNimTao hundreds of years ago. () 2. Structure: Yee Gee Kim Yang Ma allows one to project all energy forward towards the target. Tei Gong (), pulling up of the muscle around the anus area, helps unite body and stance. It also helps relax the leg muscles while being in the stance; thus the whole body reaches a highly alert and ready state. These are the necessary conditions to produce Nim Lik and must be maintained firmly. The core techniques of SiuNimTao Tan / Bong / Fuk are indeed subtle uses of body mechanics. These three techniques take the shape of arcs or bows. As we extend the arc shape further, Tan / Bong / Fuk become hemispheres. As we all know, an arc or spherical-shaped object can sustain strong impact. It can also transfer or deflect energy dynamically when spinning. A wheel can accelerate faster than objects of other shapes (e.g. square, triangle). Each movement in SiuNimTao, inspired by this efficient arc-like structure, and when combined with Nim Lik, becomes extremely powerful defensive and offensive techniques. In addition, practitioners must not employ brute muscle strength. SiuNimTao training should never be tiring. To be proficient in this foundation, all movements should be done with the mind rather than strength. Many Wing Chun practitioners like to impose their techniques into frozen and static postures. Many believe that Bongsao should be done at certain height or angle, or criticize others for not complying to their artificial standards. Some may call this style traditionalist; that style reformist; and on and on. In fact, movements in SiuNimTao are not named as if they were static postures. For example, when rolling up Tansao into Bongsao, it is the course of this rolling movement that makes up the Bongsao technique; the function of Bongsao exists in its circular motion. Similarly, all other techniques in SiuNimTao employ circular movements in various directions. It is a popular belief that Bongsao is a passive technique: practitioners only use Bongsao to deflect incoming forces. This would apply to the scenario where a statically posted Bongsao is being used to block attacks. However, this explanation lacks an understanding of Bongsao. In my experience, Bongsao can deliver enormous offensive power. Indeed, it is a very aggressive and penetrating technique due to its circular nature. Finally, I suggest that all fellow Wing Chun practitioners look carefully into each technique of SiuNimTao. Discover the subtle circular movements in each of them. Practice with mind focus and steady speed. Use the mind to command each technique rather than using muscle tension. I am sure you will gradually find great joy and satisfaction in your SiuNimTao training!

08.01.2022 I’ve been mentioning for a while to some friends and students about using the Yi (Intent) to touch someone with the mind on contact. Here in this video clip, Si...gung demonstrated how to use the mind to affect someone with little effort. He explained that trying to figure out how to produce this effect at the arm and joints would fail because the control centre is not in the body but in the mind. See more

04.01.2022 The legendary Ip Man with his 3rd student, a young Chu Shong Tin (CST). Continue reading below for some words by CST about Ip Man Note: This was taken in the... early 50s during which time CST was living with Ip Man at the Restaurant worker’s union. Since they had both fled China alone (Ip from Foshan and CST from Guangzhou), in order to take care of each other and for the convenience of training they lived together for a period of 5 years (thanks to Leung Sheung’s suggestion). During this time CST was the main teacher at Ip’s school along with Leung Sheung and Lok Yiu when they were there. This was just before Ip Man opened his big school in which later students such as Bruce Lee began their practice. In his book (The Book of Wing Chun) Chu Shong Tin writes: Ip sifu was unwilling to seek other’s help regarding his own matters unless he had to otherwise; he would prefer to handle them by himself. Although I was his disciple and had been living with him for years, he did not even allow me to take care of his laundry. Sometimes we would prepare meals on our own. However, he always insisted on cooking together. Ip sifu did not engage in hobbies during leisure time. Occasionally when he went to Macau for sightseeing, he would always buy the ‘white pigeon lottery ticket’. His luck was not bad, and he usually won a prize. He did have a habit, though, the habit that I mostly hesitated to accompany him to enjoy: night walks in the streets. At that time, I was still very young and was not used to going to bed late. Ip sifu liked to take me on these walks during the nights, wandering from Tai Nan Street to the stone pen situated on Gascoigne Road. There we would sit to rest for about half an hour before returning. By the time we got back it’d already be 2am. Ip sifu said the night walks could help one fall asleep. I would almost fall asleep right away, while he still wanted to further chat with me I could only reply up to the third sentence at most before slipping into my dreams. Ip sifu was optimistic with a youthful heart. He seldom expressed grief and sadness except when occasionally thinking of his family during Chinese Festivals. Most of the time he was humorous and often told jokes with a youthful heart... As most Wing Chun practitioners know, Ip Man publicly coined CST as The King of Siu Nim Tao in an interview in a local magazine in Hong Kong. Thanks to the recent videos on social media after his death in 2014, CST has become famous for his tremendous ‘internal’ power which he cultivated through the practice of Siu Nim Tao.
