24.01.2022 We have seen an increase in rat bait toxicity. In the following article, Dr Malin shares her insights using one of our recent patients - Kevin! Common signs, what to do as a pet owner and likely treatments. https://arecvet.com.au/dogs-and-rat-bait/

24.01.2022 Being a part of our veterinary internship program means.....? Here is one of our 2020 interns, Dr Nikki actively getting involved in a GDV surgery! Given the nature of 'bloat' in dogs, this is a condition that commonly presents after hours. AND, it's a situation that MUST be acted upon immediately for survival and pain for our precious pets.... It's therefore not so common to have this condition present during daytime hours at vet clinics - however, at 24/7 staffed facilities like AREC - we see many. For interns like Dr Nikki to be able to tackle difficult surgeries like this with another veterinarian is invaluable experience! What an achievement to be able to send this much loved pet home to their family!

23.01.2022 2021 Veterinary Internship Applications CLOSING SOON! For more information about our programs - follow the link; https://arecvet.com.au/2021-veterinary-internship/

21.01.2022 How wonderful to see HNE Health recognizing the amazing benefits of animals in human recuperation & mental health!

21.01.2022 Behind the scenes at AREC. What a day often looks like. From essential (but often unattractive ) tick clips, to mind boggling constant rate infusion set ups. From foreign body removals via endoscope, to foreign body removals via abdominal surgery. Emergency c-sections, road traffic accidents, snake bites and mechanical ventilation. ... Our capable and compassionate clinical team keep the cogs turning 24/7, providing referral, emergency, and after hours care to the pets (and their people) of the Hunter and beyond See more

21.01.2022 PSA! Puffer fish at Redhead Beach. Redhead Beach is an excellent spot for our local dog owning community to take some time out with their pooches. ... We urge anyone walking Redhead Beach to pay close attention to what your pet may be sniffing or chewing on, as puffer fish toxin know as tetrodotoxin, is life threatening. Symptoms of tetrodotoxin poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness, and lack of coordination. These symptoms can quickly progress to cardiac arrhythmias, muscle paralysis, brain dysfunction and death. Tetrodotoxin is highly potent, and a small amount of access can cause severe illness in your pet. Please make immediate contact with your local vet clinic or emergency after hours vet service if you suspect your pet has been in contact with a puffer fish.

We have a list of contact details on our website - see link below. However, we need to kindly remind our local pet loving community, that 2020 has been a busy and challenging year. Should an animal be injured, we will provide first aid, but there are limitations in what we can do until an owner is located. We thank you for your undersanding. https://arecvet.com.au/services/strays-wildlife/

13.01.2022 Hey Dr Val, you know that’s not a stethoscope right?

13.01.2022 How well can our (local) veterinary community utilise their connections and networks, to share this exciting opportunity far and wide around the globe, to bring a Specialist Animal Surgeon to Newcastle? We've been extremely fortunate to have Dr Julian Lunn with us for the past 5 years - but it's time for him and the family to move back to Queensland later in the year. So our search begins...... https://arecvet.com.au/specialist-veterinarians-surgery/

11.01.2022 The spider deliveries have started at AREC! You may have heard in the media over recent days that it's officially Funnel web season?! The Australian Reptile Park has therefore been out educating and reminding the community about their amazing anti-venom program. We are now officially a drop off point, and our 24/7 hospital has already proven to be a convenient location.... However, we have provided some information on our website with some advice about how this will work for you and our staff, and links to the Reptile Park website for all the official information you may need. https://arecvet.com.au/spider-drop-off-for-anti-venom-prog/

10.01.2022 Today we celebrate International Vet Nurse Day and acknowledge the contribution veterinary nurses bring to the veterinary profession and the community. At AREC we employee 47 veterinary nurses in a full-time, part-time and casual capacity. Our nurses work across a 24 hour roster to care for their patients and pet owners. They also maintain a hygienic facility, performing anaesthetics, assist in surgery, run blood tests and radiographs, manage stock, perform reception duties and so much more to keep our hospital running. We're so thankful for our nurses and animal attendants and so grateful for the laughter, joy and care they bring to AREC.

10.01.2022 Faces behind the masks deep in concentration with a septic abdomen surgery. On the left we have one of our 2020 interns Dr Andrew Chua assisting Dr Liz Napier who is also one of our veterinary team leaders here at AREC. Not only is Dr Liz a great clinical mentor, she also actively mentors in communication, and practices and shares knowledge and skills in mental health with our team.

10.01.2022 **Sound On** When patients snore comfortably in hospital......

07.01.2022 *Appreciation post* For all the vet nurses who are on their feet, crawling in and out of cages, getting down on the ground for cuddles and simply giving reassurance to our patients whichever way they can.... And thanks to our team who do it through the nights and weekends....

07.01.2022 Our veterinarians and nurses will be on site 24/7 over the long weekend. Please ensure you call ahead before beginning your journey to us on 1300 838 669. Given the weather forecast, we expect that it will be busy. A reminder that as we are an emergency centre, we work using a triage system and this means critically ill patients will be seen first. This may mean that stable or 'green' patients will wait longer - but please remember our staff are working hard to get to you and your pet as quickly as possible. Thanks for your understanding.

05.01.2022 Did you know our Vet Director, Dr Caroline Romeo has completed extended study in ultrasound, radiology & neurology? Here she is working with Dr Andrew Chua.

04.01.2022 How is this for an iconic trio! Chimley, Gidget, and Franky were hospitalized all around the same time for varying degrees of intervertebral disc disease. Well into their hospital stays, these delectable dachshunds are now at the point of receiving multiple daily physio sessions, supported walks outside in the sunshine, and are thoroughly enjoying being hand fed bbq chicken by their own personal butlers (or nurses as they are actually known )

02.01.2022 It’s timely that we received our Acknowledgment of Country plaque during Reconciliation Week 2021. AREC Broadmeadow stands on Awabakal land and we are proud to display this plaque in our reception area in Acknowledgment of the lands traditional owners, past, present, and emerging. #reconciliationweek2021

01.01.2022 If you love taking your dog to the beach, then Oscar's story is important for you! This very cute little guy is our success story for the week after needing to be put on a ventilator due to the effects of toxicity from a puffer fish he came in contact with. His owners think cheeky Oscar found it in the dunes whilst having a bit of an explore (like many of our pups love!). ... They weren't aware that he came in contact with this common beach danger, and it wasn't until he started displaying the worrying symptoms that they brought him to us. Oscar is adorable, loves his cuddles whilst here in hospital, and a very much loved member of his family. Seeing Oscar in such a scary situation over the weekend, to where he is now is thrilling for all of us here at AREC!
