15.01.2022 THE AWARD WINNING TRAINS ON A TRAIN RUN RETURNS ON SUNDAY DEC 27TH, DEPARTING WICKHAM STATION ON THE 5:43AM SERVICE. RUNNERS WILL ALIGHT AT VARIOUS STATIONS AND RUN BACK TO WICKHAM. THIS WILL FORM PART OF THE UNOFFICIAL COMMEMORATION OF FIFTY YEARS SINCE THE LAST STEAM POWERED NEWCASTLE FLYER. THERE WILL BE NO RUN FROM SURFHOUSE ON THIS DAY. WARNING: the remainder of this post discusses the demise of steam locomotives. Readers may find it very upsetting. On December 29th 1...970, the remaining few members of the Train Appreciators of Newcastle (TAN) gathered to see last steam powered Newcastle Flyer depart Newcastle station. The locomotive that was given this honour was the mighty 3820. It was a very wet day, even God was weeping on this occasion. It was quite the opposite picture in February 1943 with the members of TAN (mostly Engineers and Anaesthetists) gathered at 6am on a Sunday morning to witness the first 38 class locomotive haul the Newcastle Flyer. So enthralled by the sight of this mighty 4-6-2 locomotive that many of the club members ran after it. This quickly became a club tradition and as the members got fitter, they would run 25km along the tracks following the Newcastle Flyer, then returning back on another train to Newcastle station where they would enjoy morning tea. TAN became famous for its running exploits throughout the nation but especially in Victoria. The Tan track in Melbourne is named after the group and Puffing Billy race is held in its honour.* The demise of TAN can be traced back to the 'Sydney Newcastle' speed record attempt on 28th June 1964. While 3801 set the new record on 2 hours, 1 min and 51 secs for the 167km journey, its attempt to go sub 2 hours was denied by track congestion. The truth is that the Vice President of TAN was upset by the fitting of low carbon steel racing wheels to 3801. He took his protests to the tracks of Newcastle, running on the tracks while yelling his demands for an asterisk to put on the time. The speed record stood until an XPT broke the record by 6 minutes and 4 seconds in October 1988. In the intervening years, the world changed considerably and the appreciation of trains, especially diesel and electric did not hold the public’s attention and imagination. The last TAN gathering is believed to have occurred in the 1970s but no one is really sure. So join the 50 year commemorations by jumping on the 5:43am service from Wickham on Sunday, 27th December. I believe it was lots of fun last year. * denotes that this is most likely to be made up aka fake news
