25.01.2022 Interesting article on migraines and heart disease....

24.01.2022 What is whiplash? Whiplash is when your head moves suddenly in one direction, and then back quickly, most commonly as a result of a car accident. This sudden movement of your neck can cause injury with symptoms including neck pain, headaches, aching in the shoulders and arms, dizziness or feeling light headed. How long does it take to get better?... Most people recover from whiplash within a few days or weeks, others may take several months to get better. Everyone’s recovery is different, however most people will be able to go on with their usual activities, in fact keeping active is good for recovery. People who keep working, even if they can’t do all of their usual work at first, have a better recovery than people who take a long time off work. What should I do to help my recovery? See your GP and visit one of our physios to ensure you have the tools and professional advice to ensure a speedy recovery. http://www.maa.nsw.gov.au//WhiplashFactSheet_28_11_2014.PDF

14.01.2022 Do you suffer headaches and nothing seems to be working for you? One of the most important ways of identifying a neck headache (or technically speaking, a cervicogenic headache) is by reproducing the specific symptoms with sustained neck pressures. These pressures are applied at varying angles and forces to the neck joints. They require a great deal of training to refine the skill, and are safe to apply and very effective when performed correctly (by qualified professional...s in a clinical environment). By reproducing and sustaining the familiar head pain with the correct pressure, the head pain very often ‘melts’ away. This always corresponds with a reduction in neck joint stiffness. This technique, as used by our Watson Headache Certified Practitioner, sets up apart from other headache treatments that you may have tried in the past. If you have a persistent headache that isn’t responding to other treatments, call our clinic to discuss the Watson Headache Approach or visit our website to find out more www.newcastleheadacheclinic.com.au.

13.01.2022 The link between poor posture at work and headaches. Many people attribute their headache to stress, too little water or just having a bad day. But in reality, the majority of tension-type headaches are caused by pressure on the neck, made worse by poor posture. The movement of neck retraction is one of the most effective exercises that can be used to reduce the head pain produced by poor posture.... In our clinical experiences, we have noticed that people who get headaches from their necks are more likely to have lost the ability to perform neck retraction. Neck retraction is essentially the movement of a chin tuck (see the accompanying video). Within our treatments at The Newcastle Headache Clinic, we always look to improve people’s ability to perform both active and passive neck retraction. Active retraction re-trains muscle control in the deep neck muscles around the upper neck joints. Passive retraction stretches tight soft tissue around these joints. Both treatment options combine to improve the performance of neck retraction. This in turn helps to restore the normal resting positions of the upper neck joints and reduces soft tissue strain, thereby decreasing referred head pain. These simple retraction techniques are designed to be self-administered to ensure that our patients are able to manage ongoing issues with tension-type headaches in their everyday life.

11.01.2022 Did you know that 20% of all headaches and migraines are caused by the neck? At the Newcastle Headache Clinic we can confirm, almost immediately, if your neck is the cause of your headaches and/or migraines. If we can determine that your neck is involved, we have a 90% chance of being able to reduce your headache experience significantly and to see you abolish your pain, or be able to self-manage these episodes. And if you fall into the unlucky 10% that does not improve with ...our treatment, we can recommend appropriate secondary medical treatment. We have the skills to help you get control of your headaches!

09.01.2022 The amount of time we all spend with our necks in a forward protruded or bent position. ...called flexion. ....is extremely underestimated. These sustained positions have incredible power with the effect over time of causing soft tissue remodeling. The upper neck joints and the nerves from the head converge in the spinal cord. This accounts for referred head pain when the neck joints and surrounding soft tissue are stressed long enough. And that's how you get one of the most common causes of headache. Try stand up desks. Interrupt prolonged sitting and computer work regularly. Sitting is the new smoking! !!! Move move move. That's what we are designed to do. If you need more detailed advice, come on in and I'm sure we will be able to help you in some way.

02.01.2022 The key to treating migraine is to find success in desensitising the nervous system. Normalising local joint movement in the upper cervical spine by carefully moving these joints and freeing up segmental joint motion is one secret to reducing afferent neural input into the system. (There are others). Neck treatment is often an untapped treatment approach for migraine. Surprisingly, i find a large number of migraine sufferers have a neck component to their condition. Treating this can be amazingly powerful in reducing the severity of the condition. It never cures, but it certainly can be life changing.
