25.01.2022 Nuatali Nelmes - Lord Mayor of Newcastle and Declan Clausen - Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle have launched a petition against the NSW Government’s decision to chop down heritage listed fig trees in Birdwood Park. You can sign the petition here: https://www.megaphone.org.au/p/SaveBirdwoodFigs Don’t forget to SHARE too!

25.01.2022 Shopping trolleys belong at shopping centres - not on our streets and footpaths, in our parks, or in our drains.

23.01.2022 Have your say on our beautiful Gregson Park! The City of Newcastle team is here until 5pm today! Back again on Saturday 19/9 at 1pm. Pop on by!

22.01.2022 URGENT ALERT RE RISING WATER IN THE WALLSEND CBD AND SURROUNDING SUBURBS 6:00am update - water levels have dropped overnight. There is plenty of debris on lo...cal roads from flood waters so please drive carefully. Some local roads are still closed due to flooding. 8:00pm - the water levels have dropped. Fingers crossed that is then end of it. The CBD was spared again but a few home further up ironbark creek has flooding in sheds, garages and backyards. The roads are very wet and some remain closed due to pooling water. Please drive safe, slow down and don’t drive through flood water. 7:00pm update - Council Street between Nelson Street and Bunn Street is flooded as is the COuncil Street Carpark. Please avoid the area as cars driving through are causing problems for surrounding businesses. The rain has eased slightly so I am hopeful the waters won't rise much further. 6:15pm - the stormwater channel has now breached and is spilling over onto the grassed areas. The Council Street car park is completely under water. 5pm Update: I have spoken with local NSW SES - City of Newcastle, Newcastle City Police District and Fire and Rescue NSW who have performed more than 10 rescues in the last hour of people stuck in flood waters. As you can see the waters are very close to bursting the banks on the stormwater drains. who have performed more than 10 rescues in the last hour of people stuck in flood waters. Backyards in Lewis Street have already gone under. PLEASE AVOID THE AREA. Updates to follow Keep an eye on this Melinda Pavey. This is exactly what I have been asking you to fix.

21.01.2022 The Hon. Julia Gillard AC is returning to Newcastle, thanks for City of Newcastle’s New Annual Festival! Be sure to get in quick for your tickets, this will sell out fast. Thanks to Nuatali Nelmes - Lord Mayor of Newcastle and Newcastle Labor Councillors for bringing a new arts festival to our city.

20.01.2022 Is anyone surprised that Allan Robinson's Newcastle Independents political party are happy to leave homophobic comments on their facebook page? For well over a year, Robinson's fellow party members John Church - LJ Hooker and Councillor Kath Elliott have refused to condemn his homophobic actions and words, and now allow their facebook site to be used for unnecessary insults. By the way - their post was about some unmowed grass, on land that doesn't belong to Council and is th...e responsibility of the NSW Government's Newcastle Transport. Cr Church might like to use his connections in the Liberal Party to get it fixed, before allowing disgusting insults to be thrown at the City Council. [PS we would have raised this on the Newcastle Independents's page - but they blocked us from commenting. Not fans of being held to account, clearly.]

19.01.2022 The Greens need to denounced the continued sexist insults from their MPs, Branch Secretaries, Members and Supporters, as comprehensively outlined by Van Badham below. This isn’t some one-off historic incident, but a very real contemporary tactic, with underhanded sexism being operationalised by the Greens in their current QLD campaign now. As Van says: You either fight woman-hating, or you facilitate it. And if anyone’s still voting for the Greens, it’s pretty clear what side they’ve chosen to be on.

19.01.2022 Love live music and want to know more about great recent changes to the nasty old #MirrorBallLaws - tune in tonight at 8pm as John Graham MP & John Wardle from the Live Music Office get into the details.

18.01.2022 For 70-years, Newcastle Labor Councillors have fought to keep the Newcastle Ocean Baths Free. That commitment is enduring: Carol Duncan: "Our Ocean Baths are important to all Novocastrians - those fortunate to live nearby, and those who travel to enjoy the Baths with their children and families from right across this region. Recognising their importance to all Novocastrians, Labor councillors have had a 70-year commitment to free and accessible Baths in Newcastle."

11.01.2022 The Mark Hughes Foundation does incredible work for people living with brain cancer and their families. I’m proud to have contributed $10,500 towards the fundin...g of a new brain cancer vehicle for Newcastle through the Newcastle Stronger Community Grants Program. This vehicle will help the Brain Cancer Care Coordinators (BCCC’s) expand their face-to-face services and provide additional support to patients when they need it most. I got to check out the new wheels today with Mark Hughes, Brain Cancer Care Coordinator Alisha, and the other funding partners, Kim Burton from Burton Automotive , and Tim Crakanthorp MP.

11.01.2022 When the conservatives axed local lifeguards, Newcastle Labor campaigned to reverse the cuts to this vital community service. Under Nuatali Nelmes - Lord Mayor of Newcastle, those cuts were reversed and lifeguard services were restored. Today, the Lord Mayor and Labor Councillors are proud to announce that professional lifeguard patrols will be extended to a seven day a week roster over summer.... A fantastic result for the community and a big win for workers. United Services Union - USU.

11.01.2022 Mice in the council meeting, and Lions behind the paywall in the Newcastle Herald. The Newcastle Independents are silent where it matters.

10.01.2022 "Newcastle has a long history when it comes to surfing - some of the greats and champions," Mr Barilaro said. "The opportunity here is to showcase Newcastle to about 10 million viewers globally. And Newcastle is a global city. It was the perfect fit for this. "Plus, I give credit to the mayor and council for being absolutely proactive. They were able to do this in a timeline that allowed us to make decisions."... https://www.newcastleherald.com.au//massive-coup-for-newc/

09.01.2022 Our Cr Dunks is right. Please visit NSW Rural Fire Service and have a plan. Newcastle’s LGA is not immune.

09.01.2022 So, we're all going to see this, right? Right! #LaborLovesLiveMusic

09.01.2022 This was the right call for our city: Spending on works that leave a permanent positive legacy for residents while generating 700 new jobs in the wake of the worst pandemic in 100 years. Unfortunately, our capital works spend has been bitterly opposed by the Newcastle Independents who have confirmed in the chamber that they would prefer to see staff sent home without pay, so an on-paper surplus could be maintained. That's no way to run a business, let alone a city.

07.01.2022 We wish this was satire... Unfortunately, The Newcastle Oz know the Newcastle Independents’ low-rent political strategy too well. #falseindependents #liberalsindisguise #Churchonomics

06.01.2022 Tune in for Albo’s Budget Reply!

05.01.2022 This is a disgusting slap in the face to train manufacturers in Newcastle. Shame.

05.01.2022 Well done, Deputy Lord Mayor, taking a strong stand against homophobia and discrimination.

02.01.2022 Great news for many businesses across the City of Newcastle! From 2021, Council is reducing the average business rate across the city by $277, with almost 70% of suburbs across the city set to see a reduction in business rates paid. For example:... In Wallsend, business rates will fall by 12%. In Jesmond rates will fall by 10%. In Kotara rates will fall by 8%. In Mayfield rates will fall by 6%. In Hamilton and Broadmeadow, rates will fall by 5% Like house rates, business rates are based on land values calculated by the NSW Government. Any person or business who owns a commercial property and whose property has increased in value by less than 33% over the past 3 years, will actually pay less in rates next year. A little bit of good news for many businesses affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

02.01.2022 *Cr John Church - LJ Hooker & Newcastle Independents should come clean about their plans to slash City of Newcastle's workforce* When considering the revised 2019-20 budget at last week's Council meeting, Newcastle Independent Councillor John Church proposed that the City’s capital infrastructure works program be delayed or cancelled in order to prevent an on-paper deficit of $8.3 million at the end of the financial year. Under accounting standards, only 30% of the City’s cap...ital infrastructure works are expensed through the income statement ('Profit and Loss' account), meaning that the capital works program would need to be reduced by at least $27.7 million to offset the operational deficit. Council staff have confirmed that had Cr Church’s plan been supported it would have resulted in an immediate halt to all remaining capital work for this financial year. This includes road and drainage upgrades in Cooks Hill, the construction of new playgrounds at Stevenson Park Mayfield West, Brickworks Park Wallsend and Learmonth Park Hamilton, the delivery of pedestrian and footpath upgrades in Hamilton South, Adamstown, Jesmond, Lambton and Elermore Vale, and completion of restorations at City Hall. Had his plan been adopted, hundreds of City of Newcastle employees working on infrastructure projects would have been sent home, joining the 18,000 people across the Hunter who have lost work as a result of COVID-19. Even worse, council staff are not eligible for JobKeeper payments. Hypocritically, only a month prior at Council’s April meeting, Cr Church and his Newcastle Independent colleagues voted in support of a motion calling on the expedited delivery of infrastructure works as a COVID stimulus recovery, and for a commitment to protect City of Newcastle jobs through the crisis. Labor’s decision to block Cr Church’s ill-thought through proposal has protected scores of local jobs. Ping: United Services Union - USU Video of Cr Church's comments in the comments:
