24.01.2022 BACK PAIN has so many myths that unfortunately are often reinforced by media and even other health professionals. These back facts from the @bjsm_bmj address some of these myths nicely. Persistent back pain still needs to be assessed by a health professional who can help rule out any serious issues and reassure you whilst guiding you along a pathway to recovery.

24.01.2022 Great summary on the benefits and safety of strength / resistance training for children. Benefits include; Improved muscular fitness, coordination & function Improved self-esteem Low injury rates when performed appopriately... The strength gains seen are mostly from neurological adaptation rather than muscle hypertrophy until puberty. 20.01.2022 CONSTANT SHOULDER PAIN? CONSIDERING SURGERY? This new open access review from the very influential British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) highlights how surgery for bursitis/impingement/rotator cuff pain is NOT better than placebo but has a small but definite risk of harm. We are experts in non-operative treatment of shoulder problems and can help you with your pain. Call to book in to discuss your problem with one of our health professionals.... https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/11/665

20.01.2022 Hamstring strains are the most common time loss injury in many running based team sports. Prevention is better than treatment with all injuries. This is a good approach published in the @bjsm_bmj from Southampton FC in the EPL. As ever, the physios and docs at NSM can help you with all of these aspects to help prevent injury.

17.01.2022 Good quality simple advice on the key building blocks of nutrition for footballers. Non-elite athletes may need less carbs and protein overall as training demands are less. Nutritional needs vary for each individual but adequate carb intake for intermittent high intensity sports like football, good protein for muscle and cellular recovery with fat for energy and nutrient absorption are key. Ensuring high levels of Vitamin D, calcium and iron all support max performance whilst trying to minimise injury too.

17.01.2022 Kids HIIT sessions with Joe (The Body Coach)! Brilliant idea where Joe is doing free P.E. classes for kids worldwide via youtube. Get involved! Really important to keep kids (and adults) exercising whilst in isolation. Remember exercise is excellent for the immune system too. The Newcastle Sports Med Directors have been doing The Body Coach adult HIIT sessions for 2 years and can say from experience that they are great fun and keep you fit and healthy. https://www.thebodycoach.com/blog/pe-with-joe-1254.html

03.01.2022 Top performance & low injury rates are linked. But how do you stay injury free? The best program to REDUCE INJURIES BY 50% is the 11+ warm-up which is successful for both men's and women's football. We have created step-by-step instructional demonstration videos to guide you and your team through completing the program. There are several stages to complete which are tailored to everyone's own level of fitness/strength. Please ask any questions in the comments below. We apologize that the models are getting on a bit but they did their best! Enjoy the resumption of sport this week and stsay injury free. https://newcastlesportsmedicine.com.au/oth/11-plus-warm-up/

01.01.2022 Nearly 20% of supplements sold in Australia contain substances that are banned in sport. Many of these are not even listed on the label. Hopefully these changes will help protect people's health and support clean sport. Don't forget to look at the ASADA clean sport app or Global DRO websites to see if the supplements / meds you are using are safe to use (these can be found via the resources tab on our homepage). https://www.smh.com.au//sport-supplement-shake-up-to-follo
