22.01.2022 The first two weeks of the independent Gallop inquiry have now concluded. Two issues emerging from the hearings are lack of time for teachers to focus on teachi...ng and learning and inadequate wages. A tool developed by Unions NSW calculated that the Berijiklian government’s proposed wage freeze would mean a loss of $144 213 for a teacher at the top of the scale over the life of their career. Many experts have presented evidence presenting the case for increased remuneration for the profession. Academics and others have spoken about the impact data collection, student complexity and workload has had on teachers and principals. The impact of COVID-19 and teachers’ ability to adapt to new methods of learning has been highlighted. Throughout the next round of hearings the expert panel will hear evidence directly from teachers. These hearings will commence in week 3 of term 4.

15.01.2022 The constant changes, the rapidly evolving expectations on the profession and the ill-considered political interventions have led the NSW Teachers Federation to... commission an independent inquiry. Read Angelo's opinion piece in The Sydney Morning Herald and let readers know your views by also commenting on the story via their website. https://www.smh.com.au//why-teachers-have-ordered-an-indep

14.01.2022 This year marks the 10th anniversary of Wear It Purple Day, an initiative set up by young people to recognise that LGBTIQ young people have the right to be who ...they are, and can be proud of who they are. Federation is proud to stand with our teaching colleagues and students on today to celebrate Wear It Purple Day. We are proud to be part of a movement that has the potential to save thousands of lives. And we encourage you to be part of this change.

13.01.2022 At the end of NSWTF May Council we shared a moment in celebrating General Secretary John Dixon as he was attending his last council while it was tinged with sadness and tears as we said a goodbye to John Dixon as he is retiring from his position of General Secretary within our mighty union. We heard a speech from our President Angelo Gavrielatos of John’s history within the Union and all the great things he has achieved for our fantastic union followed by Mr John Dixon himself shared his memorable moments across his career. He will be missed by all members across NSWTF.

01.01.2022 "There certainly isn't enough support; what's already very clear is that teachers and principals require a lot more support, a lot more time to do the job that's expected of them." President Angelo Gavrielatos on what the Gallop Inquiry has heard so far this week.

01.01.2022 The insistence of preachers on continuing to access public school classrooms despite the fears of COVID-19 spreading in New South Wales shows how Special Religi...ous Education (SRE) providers are putting their religious mission above the safety of others. Speaking in the ‘Teachers not Preachers’ webinar last week, NSW Teachers Federation officer Jack Galvin-Waight said the pandemic had exposed SRE providers as putting their self-interest ahead of public safety. An SRE provider in Newcastle made headlines recently after saying it would ignore the concerns of school communities because, under the state’s Education Act, it had the right to offer and attend the school to provide SRE instruction. In the webinar, Jack raised many other concerns about the ongoing SRE program in New South Wales, including concerns that preachers are delivering inappropriate content to children and that teachers are losing valuable class time. Greens MP David Shoebridge shared the concerns about religious preachers having unfettered access to classrooms. Right now we’ve got a COVID-19 pandemic issue and parents and volunteers who want to come into schools to assist with literacy and numeracy are being told that they are not allowed because [the schools] want to control the number of people coming in and avoid the spread of a pandemic. Meanwhile, the doors have been opened up to an unknown number of SRE providers... he said. So we’re allowing non-teacher strangers to come into the schools to preach but we are not allowing parents to come in and help with literacy and numeracy. How cooked are the priorities of the government when it comes to this! If you missed the webinar last week, you can watch it here in full: https://www.facebook.com/142560349088496/videos/312428490207895 #SecularSchools #EndReligiousPrivilege
