08.12.2020 by Alan Davis I am ver yimpressed by the NSC Alumini work. I was a teacher at Newcomb HS from 1984, and principal from 1995 to 2005. I loved that school and every student I came in contact with, and still do.

20.01.2022 Earlier in Term 3, we were lucky enough to welcome Darren Dickson Surf Boards (Newcomb HS alum 1977-1980) as a virtual guest speaker for students in five classes across two sessions! This was just before schools went back into remote learning. Darren left school after Year 10 and completed an apprenticeship in graphics reproduction, before deciding to pursue a career in surfboard shaping. 30+ years later, Dicko's business is going gangbusters and allows him to indulge his pas...sion for surfing every day. Darren answered questions about his career pathway, following his dreams, work-life balance, starting a business, working with clients, the skills needed to become a surfboard shaper, and much more. Thank you to Dicko for generously taking time out of his morning to help our students! Here are some highlights from both sessions. If you're a Newcomb ex-student and haven't reached out to our Alumni Coordinator yet, please contact Jennifer at [email protected]

16.01.2022 Newcomb alumni Josh Walker (2013 year group) is our first cab off the rank in the Newcomb Secondary College Pathways Show's interview series with Maggie Boyanton and Matt Horsted in the Pathways team, shining a light on how he became a teacher at Portland. 13.01.2022 Some of you may have seen this video doing the rounds..... well we are proud to say that it has been produced by Newcomb ex-student Ian Nash-Gilchrist and his son. Well done on keeping us entertained in these times!

12.01.2022 Today marks the end of a glorious era for Mr Currie. After four decades in the teaching game, Mr Currie has decided it’s time to retire and enjoy the good life. Mr Currie’s knowledge and witty sense of humour will be missed by all around NSC. We wish you all the very best.

12.01.2022 Liz Carroll (NSC Class of 2010) has unleashed her inner entrepreneur, after losing her job due to the pandemic. Liz was working in the finance division at a Geelong community organisation when the pandemic hit and unfortunately she was let go. But she hasn't let that stop her from chasing her goals!... This prompted her to think laterally about her skills and how she could apply them. With a degree in business (management), another business degree in the works, a Cert IV in training and assessment, and experience as a tutor and re-registering an Australian charity - Liz has decided to launch her own tutoring business, Intergalactic Tutoring! We wish Liz all the best with her new venture. You've got to admire the resilience shown by people like Liz in these challenging times. Like and share her page to show your support!

11.01.2022 Newcomb Secondary College has reconnected with Bridget Longley (Class of 2015) and Rachel Daly (Class of 2017) this month, as they both complete university placements as pre-service teachers. Bridget is completing as Masters of Teaching (Secondary) majoring in media and English, and Rachel is studying a Bachelor of Education (Prep-12) specialising in psychology and maths. It's been lovely to welcome them back, even if it's only for a short time!

11.01.2022 The Victorian Government recently announced funding for works at Newcomb Secondary College that will include the redevelopment of the Eastern end of C Block, the Eastern locker bay, as well as the Maths and Music spaces in M Block. You'll see artists impressions in the images below. This announcement of $5.4 million will complete the $6 million 2018 election promise. We're looking forward to getting the redevelopment underway - stay tuned for updates!

10.01.2022 Flashback Friday! Some more from the archives. Is this is you, your friend or cousin? All former Newcomb students please email Amy at [email protected]

10.01.2022 SEEKING ALUMNI WORK EXPERIENCE PROVIDERS One way alumni can reconnect with Newcomb SC and support the students is by providing or facilitating work experience or a work placement. When things start to return to normal, our Pathways team hope to start organising week-long work experience for our Year 10s. We'll also be looking for providers of work placements for Year 11 and 12 VCAL students (each Friday for a term or more).... We'd love for our alumni to "pay it forward" and help our current students. Your experience, knowledge and contacts are invaluable to these young people. Please email [email protected] to join our list of potential work experience or work placement providers, and we'll be in touch when the time comes.

09.01.2022 Did you attend Newcomb Secondary/Newcomb High? Do any of these faces look familiar? We need your help. We would love to reconnect with you and hear about your journey- you may even be able to inspire our current students! If you or someone you know attended please pass this along and get in touch here or via email [email protected]

06.01.2022 Thank you to all of the Newcomb Secondary College alumni who've put their hands up to help the school's current students this year. We have a growing list of 50+ past students who are willing to help in some way! We're grateful to Darren Dickson, Wes Cusworth and Josh Walker for taking part in interviews this year, and to the Glover family for setting up a new scholarship with us. Here's a video snapshot of what we and other Ourschool alumni programs have managed to achieve together in 2020. We wish all our alumni a safe, healthy and happy Christmas and New Year!

04.01.2022 SURF'S UP! Newcomb Secondary College is excited to host its very first Live Alumni Q&A tomorrow morning, with past student Darren Dickson dropping in to talk to a few classes via video link. Dicko will share his journey since leaving school, experiences from his 30-year career as a business owner, and give students a real-life insight into working with clients to come up with the perfect design.

04.01.2022 Some positive vibes for our Newcomb alumni community as we head into the weekend! Gab Pappalardo (Class of 2008) returned to school to speak with students who are about to go to the School for Student Leadership next term. The SSL takes students from across Victoria on a potentially life-changing experience, where they'll live and learn together in a tight-knit community for an entire term. A generous donation from Gab has made it easier for these students' families to afford... to send their children to SSL. Gab met the students on Wednesday to hear their stories and also share her own experiences with mental health. We wish the NSC students all the best for next term's camp and we can't wait to hear all about it! Our heartfelt thanks go to Gab for her desire to help not just financially but also in person. 04.01.2022 Newcomb Secondary College and the NSC Alumni Program is proud to launch the Glover Family Award, a scholarship aimed at helping a Year 11 Newcomb student to finish Year 12 and pursue an interest in STEM. Professor Barney Glover AO (Newcomb HS Class of 1976), Vice-Chancellor of Western Sydney University and one of the three Glover siblings behind the award, spoke to Alumni Program Coordinator Jennifer Chiu about the annual award and why his family decided to give back to the school in this way. Head here to watch the entire interview: https://youtu.be/bv9HmOoCh7g

03.01.2022 We love having Pre-service teachers here at NSC - we enjoy it even more when they are NSC alum. Baillee graduated in 2015 and is now studying her Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching at Deakin. Baillee has enjoyed her time back at Newcomb, reuniting with her teachers and working along side them. Well done Baillee, we hope to see you back here soon.

02.01.2022 The Newcomb SC Alumni Program made it into the news last week! Check out our article in the Geelong Advertiser below.

02.01.2022 Wes Cusworth, from the Newcomb High School Class of 1982, beamed in to speak to about 100 Year 7s during English at Newcomb Secondary College this morning. Students and staff enjoyed a Q&A with Wes, who spoke about his interesting career journey and his latest achievement - ghostwriting Gary Ablett Jnr's autobiography! We delved into what it means to be a ghostwriter, how to accurately capture Gary's 'voice' in print, and more. Stay tuned to our page for a highlights video so...on. The students then split into pairs to take turns at being a ghostwriter, with the best entry to win a copy of Gaz's autobiography! Thank you to Wes for an exceptionally engaging talk. We barely scratched the surface of his career, which has also included teaching and journalism, so we're looking forward to welcoming him back another day for more of a chat.

02.01.2022 PERSISTENCE PAYS Newcomb Secondary College alumni Jhiah Barker’s love for the game of cricket has seen him represent Victoria at three National Indigenous Cricket Championships. The wicketkeeper-batsman started playing cricket at the age of six and won many sports awards while at school from 2009 to 2013. Chasing his cricket dream, Jhiah completed his VCE at Sports Education & Development Australia and unsuccessfully tried out for the Victorian Men’s Indigenous cricket team ...in Year 12. Not deterred by the setback, Jhiah tried out again the next year and was accepted! 2017-18 was an amazing season for him in local cricket too, winning a premiership with Thomson. Jhiah has gone on to play two more national indigenous championships for Victoria making the finals series each time. Hopefully 2021 will be their year to hold the premiership trophy! Moving to Darwin for work and family, Jhiah now plays premier cricket for the Nightcliff 1st XI and works for Broadspectrum, a contracting company to the defence bases, as well as a second job looking after two cricket grounds. ------- Share your story with us! We’d love to hear what our alumni have been up to since school. Please inbox us or email [email protected]

01.01.2022 Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

01.01.2022 "The reality is, I write differently to the way that Gary (Ablett Jnr) might write, so one of the biggest challenges was for me to constantly be catching myself to make sure that I was actually representing him accurately and it wasn't just a biography..." The Year 7s at Newcomb Secondary College were lucky enough to hear from the ghostwriter of Gary Ablett Jnr's autobiography, Wes Cusworth (Newcomb HS Class of 1982) this month. In this clip, Wes explains what a ghostwriter does and the importance of capturing Gary's "voice" faithfully. Our thanks again to Wes for sharing his time and expertise with us. The school library's copy of the autobiography is in high demand!
