25.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! The year leading up to school offers plenty of time and opportunities to practice those little things that may challenge your child onc...e they start kindergarten. Unwrapping a sandwich, peeling a banana and opening and closing different containers can be tricky business if your child hasnt had much practice themselves. Use this time to foster their independence and self-help skills by supporting them to do small tasks on their own. These skills all contribute to a smooth and positive start to school!

25.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! In the cooler months, children will arrive to school with layers on and will likely remove them once in the classroom or as the day get...s warmer. Please practice putting on and taking off items of clothing with your child and remind them to put their belongings in their bag when they are done. Lost school items can be frustrating and costly so please ensure to label EVERYTHING that your little one takes to school.

24.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! Encourage your child to become more independent by providing opportunities to engage in tasks and jobs by themselves. Children love to ...take responsibility and ownership of their actions, this allows them to feel more grown up and assists them in developing lifelong skills. Some examples include: sorting the washing, making breakfast, feeding the pets, preparing the table for dinner, writing the shopping list and planting in the garden. Children who demonstrate independence and self-help skills will cope with school tasks that require responsibility, problem solving and decision-making.

24.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! Writing a short story has many benefits for children, even in the years before school! Some of the advantages include promoting creativ...ity, coming up with new ideas, developing language skills and encouraging imagination and curiosity. Write a short story with your child on a topic of their choice. You may like to write the words while your little person draws the pictures. When you are both finished, your child might like to share the story with someone in your home or send it in the mail to a family member or special friend!

23.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! The year leading up to starting school is an important time for children to start developing their social and emotional skills. Buildin...g friendships with others is a huge part of the school readiness journey. Social skills that will assist your child in settling into the school environment include: Socialising with other children Sharing and taking turns Playing group games Using basic problem solving strategies Following rules and instructions Learning strategies for conflict resolution Encouraging your child to have play dates with others will support and enhance their social skills needed for transitioning to school. Check out the local park, library, playgroups and community events for a variety of fun opportunities.

22.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! Christmas is almost here! There will be lots of shopping during this week - take advantage of this opportunity to talk to your child ab...out how to buy something. Most schools have a canteen available at the school one or two days a week, where children are invited to purchase their lunch and/or snacks. It helps to support our children in doing this themselves - first they must understand the concepts of waiting, ordering, paying with money and receiving change. This requires many skills such as communicating their order, keeping their money safe and being responsible for their change until they get home. When you are out shopping, encourage your child to help you purchase something so that they can get used to this tricky task.

14.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! This week, grab a blanket and some packed lunches and head to your backyard or lounge room for a pretend picnic! Use this opportunity t...o pack your childs lunch into a lunchbox or bag, with items such as a wrapped sandwich, leftovers, healthy snacks/fruit and their water bottle. Encourage your child to open things on their own and eat lunch in about 10 minutes. Practicing this concept will give children the time to play with their friends at lunch times when school begins. Allowing time to play during break time is extremely important as this supports social skills and encourages friendships.

13.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! For 2020 school starters, most have finished their orientation and school visits during November. It is important that we keep the conv...ersations about starting school frequent during the holidays, as there are 8 whole weeks until our little people start Kindy. Children can draw pictures of how they feel about starting school, they could write a story (with help) or simply talk about what they remember from orientation with their family and friends. For something extra, you may find taking photos of the school or walking/driving past to take a look keeps the memory of orientation visits active during the summer holidays. Please keep an eye out for the Share our Space initiative where several local schools open their playgrounds up during the school holidays for families to use. They are open 7 days a week from 8am - 6pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to visit a local school in the break and build on their familiarisation of the school buildings and grounds.

06.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! Sharing family photos with children helps them develop a strong sense of belonging. Having photos in the home makes children feel valu...ed and gives them a rich understanding of where they come from. Look through old and new pictures with your child. Not only is this a lovely bonding opportunity, it also provides a chance for families to share their history and stories from the past. Photos around the home boosts a childs self-image and self-esteem.

02.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! The local library is a fantastic place to encourage your children to develop their love for books. Each library offers a free story tim...e for children aged 3-5 years, including stories, songs and craft. There are additional free programs that are offered depending on location, contact your local library to see what they offer children and families in the area. Children will borrow books from school once they start Kindergarten, you can introduce them to this process by becoming a member at your library and borrow some books together. This will encourage your child to engage with books and develop their early literacy skills, as well as promote responsibility and independence by borrowing the book and looking after it at home. Happy borrowing and reading everyone!!

02.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! Children often enjoy helping with adult jobs such as cooking, cleaning and little jobs around the house. Encourage your child to help y...ou, this may require some additional time (and patience!) as we wait for them to work through problem solving - however self-help opportunities increase independence, resilience and autonomy - important and crucial life skills. 01.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! Forming friendships is a hugely significant part of the transition to school process. Having friends is important, especially to childr...en. Friends are people who are kind to you and who like to spend time with you. Talk to your child about how friends might like to do similar things together but also like different things and thats okay. Spending time with your friends is important as it makes us feel good! Some suggestions for children making a friend include: - Telling someone your name, ask them their name - Ask if they would like to play a game with you - Ask if you can join in a game - Show someone something you like - Tell someone something about yourself - Say something nice, I like your lunchbox Encourage your child to spend time experiencing play dates with other children, as social and emotional development is extremely important in the school readiness journey.

01.01.2022 Billys tip of the week!
