They incorporated scientific theory to unlock the world’s most relaxing song, working with sound therapists during the recording process in a similar way to a music composer and filmmaker.... This is Winterbourne View hospital at Hambrook, South Gloucestershire which provided accommodation for people with intellectual disabilities and behaviours of concern. ... In 2011 the physical and psychological abuse towards people with learning disabilities from staff was exposed. That’s right - 2011! Unfortunately restrictive practices continue to be used today. Today I trained staff in Restrictive practices and watched the undercover footage that occurred at Winterbourne View to demonstrate how vulnerable people with disabilities are, and the systematic problems that facilitate human rights to be violated. People with disabilities have the same rights as you and I; human rights! As Behaviour Support Practitioners, we have an obligation to be aware of restrictive practices and report any unauthorised use to the NDIS Commission, because the abuse at Winterbourne View can not happen again! The NDIS Commission regulates the following 5 restrictive practices: Seclusion - Confinement of a person with disability in a room or space. Chemical restraint - Use of medication or chemical substance for the primary purpose of influencing a person’s behaviour. Mechanical restraint - Use of a device to prevent, restrict, or subdue a person’s movement for the primary purpose of influencing a person’s behaviour Physical restraint - Use or action of physical force to prevent, restrict or subdue movement of a person’s body, or part of their body, for the primary purpose of influencing their behaviour. Environmental restraint - Restricts a person’s free access to all parts of their environment, including items or activities. These 4 lads are part of the group, following the same group plan to play soccer until 1 lad sees a footy and he wants to play with that. He leaves the group and follows his own plan. Which leaves the other lads confused and thinking that he doesn’t want to play with them anymore. The study will focus on providing group therapy sessions to girls with Autism to focus on their identity, confidence and self-esteem to help them feel comfortable with being who they are as individuals within their community. It is meant to be read in order, as a kind of social story on the concept of neurodiversity a...nd the existence of brains that either are accommodated, and those that are not. The use of phones and apps may be a bit beyond some children, but adults (who tend to be the ones who need the most education) will grasp the concept. I've stuck to Autistic and ADHD brains because that is what I have, but obviously this could be related to any kind of neurodivergencey. Yes you may share them and use them. We reminded our campers that it’s completely normal to get into the red zone! It’s about recognising we’re in the red zone and using our red zone strategies! 01.01.2022 On the eve of Christmas Eve, it’s timely to reflect over the year that’s been. In January, we welcomed Shanin to the NEBS team. Shanin is an absolutely amazing Social Worker who has bought soo much knowledge, energy and creativity to the clinic and her clients. Then we were hit with Covid-19 which took us by surprise, and we adapted to creating an online service within 24 hours. What a ride that was! Some clients decided it was best to pause, whilst others took up the onlin...e opportunity to work through the dilemmas that Covid-19 caused them. Whilst it was chaotic and just confusing, it was nice to work with our pets by our side; often making a sneaky zoom appearance! Then we decided we would move sites and decked out a new NEBS clinic space! My husband, cousin and a few tradies transformed the space to cater for our exact needs in just a week. What a team, and we love it! We started up face to face appointments and requested everyone apply to our Covid-19 safety plan which included only attending if you’re well, sanitising, limiting people attending appointments and being super flexible if we needed to change appointments. We advertised for a Therapy Assistant and will welcome a new team member on January 11 next year. We are sooo excited to have a therapy assistant who will help our turn around time for resources be allot quicker, and potentially run some sessions on our behalf by agreement with you. As we go into 2021: We start with Zones Camp - a super cool way to learn a variety of emotions and apply strategies to regulate. Train our therapy assistant in all things therapy and behaviour support. Welcome Shanin’s baby in April and hold on tight until she returns. And that’s just in the first quarter of the year! Thankyou to absolutely everyone this year! We needed your support, and we got it. We can’t wait to kick off 2021 with you again!
