25.01.2022 These guys are life savers, literally. I love this message, it’s so simple, yet so hard for many of us to do. Thank you for sharing Tomorrow Man, hoping you are back in rural NSW sometime soon!

25.01.2022 The importance of pre-conception health A mothers diet and lifestyle impact the long term health of a child. Achieving and maintaining good nutritional status PRIOR to conception is vital for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Prior to conception it’s important to focus on eating balanced diet with a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetable, quality protein and healthy fats especially organic where possible. Reduce your alcohol and caffeine intake and drink filtered water regul...arly. Abundant literature looks at associations between pregnancy complications and deficiencies in vitamin D, folate, vitamin B12, iodine, iron, zinc and selenium. Severe micronutrient deficiencies are more common in developing countries especially with diet high in unrefined grains and legumes that contain phytates and polyphenols, which limit micronutrient absorption. The pill also leaches and alters absorption of essential micronutrients in our body. So it’s a great idea to start taking a high quality prenatal vitamin months in advance to account for the extra micronutrients a female needs to conceive and sustain a healthy pregnancy. Next post I will explain what to look out for when choosing a pre-natal supplement and which ones we recommend at the clinic .

20.01.2022 The last day of 2020 has reached us and what a year it has been. There are a lot of ways to look back at this year, the choice is up to us. A few things that come to mind from this year - amazing community spirit, the time reclaimed by families to spend together, kids excited to go back to school after home schooling experience, the sportsmanship shown when we could return to sport, the willingness to try new activities and return to old hobbies that previously pushed aside... as there was a thought of not enough time, to name a few. So as the last few hours of 2020 pass reflect back on what good habits you wish to take forward with you. May this new year bring new happiness, new goals, new achievements, and a lot of new inspirations on your life. Wishing you a year fully loaded with happiness. Wishing every day of the new year to be filled with success, happiness, and prosperity for you. #gratitude #wellness #happiness (For those who are looking for baby updates, Kathy is still in one piece 40+5 days so it looks like a 2021 baby)

20.01.2022 One key skill for building emotional resilience is learning to get comfortable with emotions. ALL emotions. But being comfortable with negative emotions doesn’t mean foregoing emotion regulation. Not all behaviour is appropriate, and sometimes, we need to sit in an emotion without fixing or taking it away. A part of allowing a negative emotion means not needing to change a boundary in order to contain it. But we can still have behavioural expectations. On the weekend, ...we had a birthday party for my son. He was given a stack of coloured cups to hand out. At first, he sat and tried to work out which person would like which colour. Then he stopped, shuffled them, and walked around the table handing them out in their random order. He got to his brother and paused. He KNOWS that this brother’s favourite colour is blue. He looked at the pile of cups, and the top one was orange. He took it, passed it to his brother and said You get what you get and you don’t get upset. If you scream and you shout then you’ll just miss out. I asked where he had learned that rhyme. He told me they say it as school when handing out items, in order to stop whining over favoured colours, and prevent the chaos of haggling and swapping. That’s interesting, I said, but sometimes, if I don’t get what I want, I AM disappointed. I DO get upset. Don’t you? Yes, but you’re not MEANT to! my son replied. Hmmmm actually, I think when something is upsetting, you’re allowed to be upset. Being disappointed when you miss out on something isn’t the WRONG feeling. Is it? I had all of their attention now. The eldest chipped in, Yeah, but if you whine about it, you’ll get in trouble and just miss out. But you’re not in trouble for being disappointed you’re in trouble for the whining, aren’t you? I guess. Then my three boys set about writing a better rhyme. It’s longer than the original, but I think they did a great job. (Note: they use brave as a simplification the idea they can be both upset AND okay.) You get what you get And you might get upset. If you don’t get your fave You can practice being brave. Breathe in and breathe out You don’t need to shout. If you don’t get your way You can still be okay. See more

20.01.2022 How to prune: There are two ways to cut your plants to promote growth into a certain limb/bud/direction or to remove that limb/growth completely. Use these next tips to encourage growth and limit the stress on your plants (too much stress and they won’t blossom and may die!) - Photo 1 = cut on a 45-degree angle with the highest point being above the part you are wanting to encourage growth.... - Photo 2 = Larger branches require 3 cuts to stop bark from stripping (a stressor for your plant/tree) and also allows for better removal/growth. A couple of don’ts: - Don’t cut 50% or more of your tree/plant otherwise too much stress and you could kill your plant. - Don’t cut frostbitten plants until they have started to drop all their foliage themselves. If you prune too soon it creates too much stress and again can kill your plant. - Don’t cut facing direct west/north (angle the cut away from these directions). https://www.lowes.com/n/how-to/prune-trees-and-shrubs See more

17.01.2022 Did you know - you have just as many nerve endings in your gut as your brain?? Did you know your vagus nerve - the main nerve between your gut and your brain) sends 80% of its signals up to your brain - this means your gut has A LOT to do with how you feel, and how you interact with others. Did you know that 70% of your immune system is located in your gut? ... Did you know good bacteria such as acidophilus is passed from generation to generation. A baby literally takes a gulp of bacteria as it passes through the birth canal, hence establishing a foundation for its natural probiotic levels. This is why it is so important for mothers to optimise their health and friendly bacteria levels before giving birth. The bacteria in your gut, and the health of your gut is important to your overall health! If you want to know more - ask your chiropractor on your next visit!

12.01.2022 Every year Australians throw away an estimated three million tonnes or 5.2 billion dollars of food. An average of $3800 worth of food from each 4-person household. 1/3 of our bins is made up of food waste. ... 1 in 5 things we buy at the supermarket we throw in the bin. Why is this so important? Well there’s the financial loss; what would you do with an extra $3800? And then there is decomposing food scraps that are 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide, meaning, that they are more potent in advancing the green-house effect within the atmosphere. So what can we do to help our earth? 11.01.2022 From Sophie: Minimising your toxic load is an important consideration to factor in when planning a pregnancy or to support healthy normal growth in a developing fetus. Toxins are chemical substances that accumulate in our bodies and interfere with normal functioning. We are exposed to a large amount of toxins in our daily lives that affect you and also your baby. ... Decreasing household toxins by using organic personal hygiene items and environmentally friendly cleaning products that are biodegradable. Other than your typical toxins in the photo, consider shampoos and toothpaste free from sodium Lauryl sulphate and propylene glycol and deodorants free from aluminium. Avoid bleach, Round up, weed killers and bug sprays which are extremely toxic. Artificial sweeteners especially aspartame ( FDA and medical studies have linked to miscarriages). Consider the impacts of caffeine, alcohol, diuretics, smoking and over the counter medications. Focus on eating fresh foods and limiting intake of refined processed food which man-made chemical additives. Foods high in can offset some of the toxins we cannot avoid. Antioxidants fight free radicals (toxins) and help to eliminate them. Vitamin C, E and beta carotene (A) are well known antioxidants and can be found in capsicum, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, whole grains, nuts and beans. Consider reading ‘Well Adjusted Babies’ by Dr Jennifer Braham-Floreani for extensive information on what to avoid, why and what to do. See more

10.01.2022 When to prune: Early spring is a great time to prune your plants. It helps to promote good plant health, encourage new growth and increase the production of flowers or fruits by channelling the plants' energy more efficiently. ... Why prune? - Direct growth. Pruning influences the direction in which a plant grows: Each time you make a cut, you stop growth in one direction and encourage it in another. - Promote plant health: Trees and shrubs stay healthier if you remove branches that are diseased, dead, pest-ridden, or rubbing together. - Create particular shapes: this may be helpful for creating shade in a particular spot or promoting growth away from certain areas such as gutters/house. - Produce more flowers or fruits: Flowering plants and some fruit trees are pruned to increase the yield of blossoms and fruit and to improve their quality. For some fruit trees, you'll make many small, precise cuts each dormant season. See more

07.01.2022 Gardening is a great way to get moving and to stress your muscles and joints in a positive way. But first let me ask you, if you were going to the gym how long would you take to achieve this activity? Half an hour? An hour? 2 hours?... A common thing to see is that people don’t account for the fact that gardening is physically demanding. They spend 10 hours in the garden over the weekend and wonder why they are in so much pain on Monday morning. This happens because the tissues haven’t had time to adapt- muscles, ligaments and joints. As a survival response our body creates inflammation and sore spots to prevent us from doing more while it tries to heal itself. So, the next time you’re going to get into the garden, think about how much time you’re going to spend there. If starting back for the first time maybe a 10 minutes on 10 minutes off for an hour might be a good starting point. You can slowly increase the intervals or amount of time allowing for better adaptation of your body. # NEC #gardeninginspring #september #spring #newenglandchiropractic See more

03.01.2022 WORDS ARE IMPORTANT How we think and feel about food can affect us for a lifetime. Think about how you think about food. Is it a "treat" for having a good day, or to "soothe" you when you are having a bad one. Do you use itj to numb your emotions, or as the only way you know how to reward yourself. Do you spend time telling friends at a dinner that you love bread/dessert/pasta, but uggg carbs..... the stuff is soooo "bad". Food has no moral value, and judging ourse...lves - or our children on the type of food we eat sends the wrong message about our nutrition, and how we should instead pay attention to how our body feels when we choose to eat different foods. "Instead of using words such as "guilt", "bad", or "treat" when describing food, what if we just called it what it was - pizza, strawberries, ice cream, almonds, cookies, peaches, spinach - food is food. Food is neutral. Our feelings toward food should be neutral - or positive. But why - and how- have our feelings toward food become so negative? Food, which nurtures us, helps us to grow, gives us pleasure, is tied to so many memories, and is completely essential to life - how is it possible to feel negatively toward it? The answer is, it is possible because of the language used to describe food. It is also possible to reframe that language. This may not come easy, but beginning with how you speak to yourself - transitioning from "I wish I didn't want [insert food here] now" to "I enjoy [insert food here] and I am allowed to have this food", or "I'm so bad for enjoying [insert food here]" to "I enjoy [insert food here]" help to disrupt the negative culture we have developed surrounding food. Instead of trying to "eat less", what if we tried to eat more nourishing foods? What if we strived to feel full and content by choosing balanced meals and snacks, rather than choosing to feel hungry and consuming fewer nutrients than we really need? " (paragraph from https://www.alyssalavy.com//why-we-need-to-stop-calling-fo) So start now, be more aware of your words and how they make you feel about food, and how you talk about food to your kids, and how they talk about food.

03.01.2022 Folate is a nutrient essential for prevention of neutral tube defect in developing fetus. Folate is an umbrella term for a number of different compounds - including folic acid, folinic acid and 5-MTHF (also known as methylfolate, MTHF, and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate). Commonly folic acid is used in high amounts in pre-natal vitamins. The issue is: folic acid does not occur naturally in foods and in order to function within the body, requires activation by specific react...ions. Growing awareness of genetic variations, and other factors which impact folic acid utilisation has lead to the idea that certain individuals will benefit more from taking active forms of folate. - occur naturally in foods (e.g. green leafy/cruciferous vegetables) and are considered more biologically active and therefore better absorbed in the Gastrointestinal tract. So when looking for a prenatal vitamin to ensure you are ingesting adequate amounts of folate, consider looking for one that uses active forms of folate over a supplement with only folic acid. Our favourite in the clinic is Bioceutical In-Natal and Eagles Tresos Natal, which both contain active folate. https://www.bioceuticals.com.au//active-folate-versus-foli https://www.ajog.org/article/S0002-9378(08)02076-0/fulltext See more

03.01.2022 We are taking a break to enjoy the holiday season. We hope to see you in January 2021.

03.01.2022 From Sophie: Spontaneous pregnancy loss is the most common complication of pregnancy. Studies show 1 in 5 women miscarriage before 20 weeks. ... Risk factors for miscarriage involve fetal chromosomal abnormality, increased maternal age, obesity, caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, and exercise. And now evidence indicates that psychological stress is harmful to women in early pregnancy. Stress is defined as any situation that overwhelms our ability to cope. Psychological stress can include the experience of emotional trauma, social problems, concerns about money, marital/partnership disharmony, work pressure and increased workplace demands, significant change in personal circumstances as well as prior pregnancy loss. Research is continually being done to explain the links between stress and miscarriage however some suggested impacts include elevating cortisol levels, suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and lowering progesterone levels. . - Make time to do things you enjoy, make time to find balance in your weekly routine. - Work on relationships and support networks. - Some trauma may need support from professional like counsellors or psychologists, so never be afraid to reach out for help. - And you can always refer back to our previous post which explain the positive benefits of exercise, meditation, being outdoors/gardening, getting sunshine, tips for a good sleep routine and the importance of community connections. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5431920/ https://www.newscientist.com//dn6644-stress-can-make-pr/ https://www.thewomens.org.au//early-pregnanc/miscarriage See more

01.01.2022 Letting worms decompose your food scraps helps create rich, nutritious food for plants in your garden. Worms can eat half their weight in food a day. They love food scraps (not onions/shallots or chilli’s). By devouring food scraps, the worms reduce the amount of decomposing gases produced (see our last post). Instead turning your un-needed food waste into nutritious plant food comprising carbon and nitrogen. ... Worms also help to create gully’s within the soil where water can either gather, helping to feed plants or allow a pathway for roots to grow.
