24.01.2022 This could be fun for some of our juniors! Our daughter did it a few years ago and had a great time.
24.01.2022 Some more photos from the Thunderbolt Regatta (mostly from Sunday). Hope you like them. What an awesome weekend!
23.01.2022 End of Day#1 of the Thunderbolt Regatta.
23.01.2022 A bit of ancient club history for you as a mid-week boost! Chris has been down in the archives and dug out some great snippets! These two are from 1998 and 2000 respectively, but there will be more!
21.01.2022 Hi all. We will have a social sail on Sunday 930 Hope to see u all there
21.01.2022 Amazing pics of Malpas this evening from Phil Coop! Can’t wait to get down for a sail! 105% full!
19.01.2022 Awesome photos from yesterday, thank you Paolo!
18.01.2022 Hi all! Just a heads-up that, as the wind forecast is for near gale force winds tomorrow (similar to today), we will most likely not be racing due to safety concerns. I will update this post accordingly if anything changes. Sorry about that, but it’s very common at this time of year. Hoping for fair winds next week! UPDATE: definitely no sailing tomorrow, but some folks will be coming down for fun sailing on Sunday (no official racing) - a much gentler wind is forecast.
17.01.2022 Only 2 more sleeps till the THUNDERBOLT REGATTA! *There's still time to get your online entries in!* This will save us time trying to read your terrible handwriting and type things into the spreadsheet, and will keep you safer from being coughed on while standing in line. There *may* be a random prize draw to reward those who have entered online. Our Commodore is out purchasing prizes today. ... https://www.cognitoforms.com/NewEng/ThunderboltCupEntryForm
17.01.2022 Wind is looking good for Sunday! 15 knots and sunny! See you there.
16.01.2022 Another awesome day on Malpas! With the forecast quite windy today, we were a little worried about the new sailors and kids, but we needn’t have been! We had 5 juniors on the water including a couple who had never sailed before - how awesome does young Abbott Wright look on the Kadet? He managed to capsize and right it by himself a couple of times without ever having been taught what to do. Aaron Coop took a mate out on the Windrush and did super well, not even a single capsize. Mike and young Elijah had a great time on the Nacra and went for a few swims. Bruce and I pottered around in the Lasers (I chickened out a bit by sailing with the 4.7 rig). David was seen grinning his head off trapezing on the Hobie 16, and after racing Chris Thompson took him out and showed him how to capsize!
16.01.2022 Happy Valentine's Day to all those who love sailing (even in the rain and mist)! We had a great day out on the water today, welcoming some new sailors (hi Kate and Yannick, Estelle & family, and the whole Fisher family with their Heron, as well as sailing school graduates the Rush family plus friends). We were thrilled to have 12 craft out on the water, with 9 racing, and we think we counted 11 youth sailors! Geoff and Chris had a great race on the Lasers (narrowly won by Chris), but Rory and Oliver put on a terrific performance on the Laser Radial together, sailing the whole long course and smashing it out of the park on handicap (full results to follow). Thanks so much to Geoff, Mike, Chris, Phil, Joel, and Aaron for helping out with boat rigging, and to Jude and Deb for running the rescue boat. :)
15.01.2022 We had an awesome Xmas sail yesterday at Malpas! Nine craft out on the water, including Rebecca Campbell’s first sail on the Windsurfer LT. Light and variable winds meant a somewhat frustrating race, but we all enjoyed some Christmas food and cheer afterwards.
15.01.2022 We're holding a Sailing School on the last weekend in January! Just in case you didn't already read about it, we made an event (link to the entry form is also included).
13.01.2022 What an awesome day of sailing! We had 8 boats out on the water (7 racing), and some really close competitive racing. Great to see new faces out there - Mike Croft took out the Nacra 5.0 with son Elijah (thanks to Geoff for lending the boat!) - after not having sailed for 20 years, he was smashing it out there and having a blast/. Hard to pick the best photos, they were all so awesome, so here is a medium-sized selection.
13.01.2022 We are very excited to have Bec Campbell catering for our regatta! She has promised us LOTS of yummy goodies, including options for vegetarians (but also plenty of meat for you keen carnivores). Please let us know ASAP if you have any other dietary requirements, and they can be catered for too. The best way to do this is for everyone to FILL IN THE ONLINE ENTRY FORM even if you would prefer to pay with cash on the day - this way we have an idea of numbers for catering. https://www.cleverhelpfulbitter.com/
13.01.2022 Another awesome day on the water yesterday, with some more of our sailing school folks coming back and some new ones too! Big thanks to Geoff for running races, juggling rigging boats and instructing new folk. The feedback has been really encouraging from those that were there, Phil, Aaron, Finlay, Estelle, Jean, Angus, Noah, Rebekah, Nathan, Gary, Hamish, James, Elijah, Joel & Mike. Photo credit: Michael Croft and Geoff Allen.
12.01.2022 A bit windy today, spent some time in the water so didn’t get any pics! We had a great turnout, but only 2 of us managed to sail the race... the rest retired to the beach to watch the competition between Geoff and Chris. Results: Scratch: Chris Thompson 1st, Geoff Allen 2nd... Handicap: Chris 1st, Geoff 2nd Well sailed Geoff, very close racing, fun to watch! DNF: Deborah Apthorp, Paolo & Alba (good effort on the 59er!), Bruce Floyd, Andy Sawyer. Start Boat: John Belcher & Elena.
12.01.2022 A rainbow over Malpas! Best sign for a terrific regatta! See you all there.
11.01.2022 Just in time for the Regatta, NESC Commodore Chris Thompson was featured in VividMinds VividFurtures this week. https://vividmindsvividfutures.com.au/chris-thompson-commo/
10.01.2022 Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and online entries for the Thunderbolt Cup are now available! Draft Sailing Instructions: https://tinyurl.com/yx9nbkjm Notice of Race: https://tinyurl.com/y657rznz... ONLINE entry form: https://www.cognitoforms.com/NewEng/ThunderboltCupEntryForm Please try to get your online entries in so we can have an idea of numbers. This will also make things run more smoothly on the day. There's a spot for you to report special dietary requirements - the event will be fully catered with yummy food by Bec Campbell.
10.01.2022 Another great day's sailing on Malpas! A bit less wind today, and from ALL directions, but was a cracker of a day! We welcomed new members David Wright and Phil and Aaron Coop, as well as Mike and Elijah Croft on the Nacra 5.0 and Joel Croft (with Aaron) on the Windrush. So great to see cats back on the dam! Another highlight of the day was the DF65 remote control yachts which were a HUGE hit with the kids, especially Max Campbell (pictured). We had a leisurely race round t...he buoys (with all different wind directions) and then some fun casual sailing. Results: Yardstick Deb Apthorp (Laser) 1, Ed Campbell (Laser) 2, Joel Croft & Aaron Coop (Windrush) 3, Phil Coop (Laser) 4, Mike & Elijah Croft (Nacra) 5. Handicap: Ed Campbell (Laser) 1, Deb Apthorp (Laser) 2, Joel Croft & Aaron Coop (Windrush) 3, Phil Coop (Laser) 4, Mike & Elijah Croft (Nacra) 5.
09.01.2022 Today we had a lovely day on the water in somewhat chilly conditions with moderate winds. We practiced starts, and saw some great improvements! There were 4 Lasers on the water as well as a Windrush, a Heron, and a Topper. Thanks to Chris for the coaching and Kenzie, Drew and Miriam for helping on the start boat.
09.01.2022 It was pretty windy yesterday out at Malpas - but three brave sailors launched their vessels. Only Gary on the windsurfer seemed to relish the conditions - Geoff broke his tiller, Ordenio decided discretion was the better part of valour after a capsize, and I was happy enough to take photos from the start boat.
08.01.2022 I thought you might all enjoy a peek at the chaos round the mark in Sunday's light winds. Sound ON!
08.01.2022 A few pics from Day 1 of the school!
05.01.2022 We were very excited to have both new and old kids on the water today! We were joined by Richard Newton on his windsurfer (a tip shop special - we love those!) and his kids Izzy and Alastair, who had never sailed before but happily climbed aboard the Topper and did a bit of swapping around with Joel Croft and Aaron Coop on the Windrush catamaran. Then Joel had a go on the Laser 4.7 (which was met with the seal of approval) while Aaron went Super Sloop on the Windrush. Elena a...lso had a go on the Laser 4.7 (to see if she can go solo sans skipper!) and did well at working things out. Since their 420 is out of action, John took the full rig Laser out for the first time and then took Elena out for a jaunt on the front of the boat. Last but not least, we are proud to report that there were 3 generations of Crofts sailing, with Elijah and Mike on the Nacra, while Mike's dad James took out a Laser in spite of not having sailed in more than 20 years (and never having sailed a Laser)! A thoroughly good time was had by all, with a lovely 10-15 knot breeze and sunshine (no racing, due to race officer spending too much time finding bits for club boats). All in all, 7 boats on the water, including 5 youth sailors! See more
05.01.2022 Hi all, we are heading down for a fun sail today! Deferring the start of Club Championship racing as many members will be down at Lake Keepit Sailing Club for their 60th anniversary celebrations.
04.01.2022 ONLINE ENTRIES FOR THE THUNDERBOLT REGATTA! Hey everyone! We have heard rumours, whispers, text messages, smoke signals etc. that we could have around 25-30 boats coming for this regatta! While we are super excited about that, so far we only have 5 online entries. Even if you'd prefer to pay cash on the day, could you PLEASE fill out the online entry form? It will make organising the regatta SO much easier for all of us (including Bec, who needs to know catering numbers by ...*tomorrow* - Wednesday). Thank you! https://www.cognitoforms.com/NewEng/ThunderboltCupEntryForm
03.01.2022 Woo hoo - the new flags have arrived in time for the Thunderbolt regatta this weekend! We also have a few sticker cheat sheets (pictured), but I thought I’d post this now so you can all study in advance in case you’re not familiar. It looks likely that we will have 2 divisions (cats and monohulls), so you’ll need to know the 1 and 2 flags for your division. The other most important ones are Postponement (pyjama flag) and Individual recall, cos we WILL be calling you if you’re over the start!
03.01.2022 The calm before the storm... all ready for the Sailing School!
03.01.2022 Wow, everyone, allegedly the level on Malpas is now up to 90%!!! This means our ramp will be in the water again - happy days! (Thanks to Phil Coop for the detective work.)
