24.01.2022 Who are you really targeting with your branding? It is not uncommon for professional service firms to spend a fortune on their branding, ranging from designing custom logos, letterhead, email signatures to give away products including pens, T-shirts, notepads and more. In fact the list of topics to focus on from a branding perspective is almost endless. But who really benefits from all this effort and expense?... The fact is that branding, more often than not, is not the determinative factor in why a client would select your firm or your business over a competitor. I am not saying that branding is unimportant. Not at all. Branding is critical. What I am saying that to use branding effectively it has to be very, very clear who is forefront in mind in the creative process. Unfortunately, more often than not, when businesses engage in their branding they fall into one very common and easy trap - and they are not alone in this by a long shot. And that trap is this: they end up making their branding all about them. Big mistake. It is so easy to get confused in your marketing and to make everything about you and how you want to be perceived. When this happens, branding can become almost egotistical as the priority is about your reflection to others, which unfortunately defeats the entire point of the exercise. Branding must be about your market. And to be effective, it needs to resonate with them. Cleverly switching the focus of your branding strategy from your reflection to theirs, and doing this in the right way, can be one of the most powerful marketing techniques that any business or firm, regardless of its size, can employ.

20.01.2022 What are the 5 hardest words for a lawyer to say? Contrary to popular opinion that lawyers can effectively speak underwater, the truth is that there are five little words that most lawyers find incredibly hard to get out. What are they? Well, this little sentence, apparently so innocuous and innocent, can leave seasoned practitioners breaking out in a cold sweat:... "Can I have your business?" Shocking isnt it? The fact is that lawyers are engaging in business every single day, but many dont recognise what they are actually doing. Knowing how to sell and close a deal is a critical skill for any practitioner, but many lawyers are trapped behind this lofty ideal of being a professional and that somehow this means asking for work or engaging in sales is (to put it bluntly) beneath them. The problem with this belief is that it is incredibly difficult to make serious money without engaging in sales. So the sooner sales is embraced as as core skill set by lawyers, accountants and other professionals the sooner revenue will start to skyrocket in your practice area. The trick is in learning how to sell in the right way - no one likes a hard sell, and most consumers these days have a nose keenly attuned to a sales pitch and will vanish in a puff of smoke as soon as the sales pressure starts to build. So forget those sleazy images of used car sales people or pushy shop assistants, true sales is an art form. Learning sales has another key advantage as well - many of the professional conduct issues that lawyers and other professionals face relate to poor inter-personnel communication with clients and other parties. Sales is all about relationships, so a powerful by-product of effective sales training can be significantly improved inter-personnel dynamics, both with your client base and with your colleagues.

07.01.2022 How giving less is really giving more All too often we can trick ourselves into misunderstanding the value equation. The origins for this undoubtedly go back a long way. We are taught from childhood to give more than we receive, and this is how it should be! Giving has powerful intrinsic value, both to the giver and the receiver. Many societies around the world would crumble to the ground if people did not give and support one another and their greater community to an extent... far more than they receive in return. But, something has gone awry with the value equation when it comes to the law. And, this is not isolated to the legal profession either. It is all too easy to lose sight of what value actually is, and what it means, so that we end up completely confused. Somewhere along the way, we started to believe that what we value is the same thing as what our client values. But this is not the case! We have a totally different perception of value to our client, and so the challenge is in learning how to see value and the value equation from their perspective every day. We can believe that by working ridiculously long hours and being on call 24/7 we are providing incredible value. But is that really true? Getting the value equation right is not as easy as it may seem. Once value can be seen the way it should be, suddenly the way we allocate our time and perform our role changes so that in the end, giving less may really be giving more.

05.01.2022 An important article about the health and well-being of the profession - a must read! These issues are not isolated to the United States.
