25.01.2022 Time for a maintenance check of your face masks! Thank you to all who have been wearing face masks when you leave your homes and for your choice to protect the health of others. We appreciate it! Your reusable face mask is likely to be showing some stress of its own, with repeated washing and drying. You may notice the mask feels thinner, looser or doesnt sit... properly on your face. Check that the elastic or ear loops have not become stretched you may need to replace them with new ones. If the mask fabric itself has stretched, experiment with changing the positioning of where the ear loops are placed on the mask, to hold it securely to your face. Remember, if you can feel a nice breeze when you breathe in and out- your mask is not fitted properly and is not protecting others. For information on how often to wash your face mask etc, https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/face-coverings-covid-19 k-is-working For any health or mental health concerns, our doctors and counsellors at NewHope Medical are available online or face to face - please call 9066 1145 or visit https://newhopemedical.com.au/book-an-appointment/

25.01.2022 This spring it is more important than ever to speak to your doctor to manage your hay fever and asthma and if your symptoms are new or different to usual you must get tested for coronavirus. Hay fever or asthma can produce symptoms similar to coronavirus such as a runny nose, cough or shortness of breath, and while good management can help prevent these, it is critical to get tested for coronavirus if these are different to your usual symptoms. People who are sneezing and c...oughing from hay fever or asthma may produce more droplets and if they have coronavirus, it could spread quickly. People with asthma and hay fever symptoms may also touch their face more frequently, increasing their risk of being infected with coronavirus if they are not practising appropriate hand hygiene. Our friendly doctors at NewHope Medical can assist you in managing your asthma or hayfever. Make an appointment today! https://newhopemedical.com.au/

25.01.2022 How are you coping with the smokey air in Melbourne? Smoke from fires can reduce air quality and can affect you and your familys health. Children (up to 14), adults over 65, smokers, pregnant women, and people with a heart or lung condition are more sensitive to the effects of breathing in smoke. Their symptoms can be worse at lower smoke concentrations compared to other people.... Signs of short term smoke irritation such as itchy eyes, sore throat, runny nose and coughing usually clear up in healthy adults once youre away from the smoke. Anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing should call 000. Find out more about how smoke can affect your health and the actions you can take to avoid or reduce potential health effects. https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/c/smoke-and-your-health
24.01.2022 How healthy is your heart?? Find out how you can reduce your risks. Every day 51 Australians die from heart disease; its a confronting figure, especially as 64% of Australian adults have three or more modifiable risk factors. Medicare-funded Heart Health Checks are now available from your GP. Let us know when you make your booking as these must done separately from a consultation.... A Heart Health Check could save your life or the life of someone you love. Your regular doctor will perform the check, and the results indicate your level of risk for having a heart attack or stroke within the next five years. Your GP will discuss treatment options for any identified risk factors and advice and information on reducing your modifiable risk factors. The Heart Foundation recommends Australians over 45 years of age have a Heart Health Check. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians should have a check when they are over 35. https://www.heartfoundation.org.au//heart-health-checks-do

23.01.2022 Due for a check-up? Feeling sick? Have a flare-up that needs attention? If you have a long-term health condition, it’s particularly important you don’t put off contacting your usual care provider if you’re due for a check-up, feeling sick, need medications or have a flare-up that needs attention. If you put off something that seems small now, you might end up with a bigger problem down the track.... Make sure you continue to go to any usual or scheduled appointments with your doctor. See how to access health services: https://www.health.gov.au//accessing-health-services-durin and medications https://www.health.gov.au//getting-medicines-during-corona during COVID-19 restrictions. NewHope Medical offers consultations by phone or video, however if your doctor does need to see you at the centre, we have taken every precaution to ensure your safety when you visit. Call us on 9066 1145 or book online. 23.01.2022 Across the world, men die an average six years younger than women, and for reasons that are largely preventable. Which means that it doesnt have to be that way: we can all take action to live healthier, happier and longer lives. For more info, visit https://au.movember.com
23.01.2022 Your Prescription will look different from 1 February Active Ingredient Prescribing PBS and RPBS prescriptions now need to include information about the active ingredients in each medicine. The inclusion of active ingredients on prescriptions will be mandatory from 1 February 2021.... It’s important to remember that most medicines have two different names an active ingredient and a brand name. There may also be more than one brand of the same medicine. If a prescriber would also like to include the medicine brand name, it will appear after the active ingredient information. The goal of this initiative is to help people understand what medicines they are taking and to reduce the risk of people accidentally taking multiple doses of the same medicine under different names. Other benefits include allowing pharmacists to easily dispense an alternative generic medicine if the patient’s usual brand is unavailable and a potential reduction in out of pocket costs to patients and the PBS via increased uptake of generic medicines. You will only be offered a generic brand of a prescription medicine if it is proven to be bioequivalent to the original brand. This means that the active ingredient is identical and the medicine is manufactured to have the same effect in the body so you can be confident that the generic brand will have the same potential health benefits as your usual brand, or the brand on your prescription. The potential side effects will also be the same. People with certain conditions may be advised to stick with their original prescribed brand. If your doctor ticks the ‘Brand substitution not permitted’ box on the prescription, the pharmacist will know not to offer you an alternative brand. You can also request your usual brand if you don’t want to change. The doctors and counsellors at NewHope Medical are here to answer your questions and to assist you with your health and mental health matters. Please call 9066 1145 for appointments. 19.01.2022 5 Steps To Staying Healthy In Winter Easy ways to boost your immunity and avoid colds and flu this season. Did you know that socialising strengthens your immune system? 1. Boost your diet ... Eating foods that are high in vitamin C will help keep your immune system strong, so include fruit and veggies such as lemons, kiwifruit, capsicum and broccoli in your weekly shop. If youre struggling to get the recommended two serves of fruit and five serves of veggies each day, try juicing them, making juices that consist of two-thirds vegetables and one-third fruit. Ensure your diet also includes plenty of lean meats, fish, poultry, low-fat dairy, legumes, wholegrains, nuts and seeds, and use lots of herbs and spices. 2. Exercise regularly Its vital to keep your workout regimen up during winter, with a recent study showing that a moderate level of regular exercise has a long-term cumulative effect on immune response. Studies show that regular aerobic exercise, five or more days a week for more than 20 minutes a day can lower the number of sick days during the winter cold season. But dont go overboard. Overly strenuous exercise releases the stress hormone, cortisol, in the body, which can weaken the immune system. 3. Stay connected Socialising helps strengthen your immune system by keeping you active and reducing your stress levels, so avoid the temptation to rug up on the couch all winter. Invite friends over for dinner or host a games night, visit local museums and art galleries, wrap up warm and go for a walk in the park with your family or plan a cinema date with your partner. 4. Scrub up Frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness as it limits the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. This is important during winter when we tend to cough and sneeze more frequently. 5. Sleep well Lack of sleep can have a serious effect on your immune system, making you more vulnerable to catching colds. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as listening to soft music or soaking in a warm bath. Avoid watching TV or using your computer just before bedtime and turn the lights down low an hour before you turn in for the night, as it will boost the release of melatonin in the brain. Also try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
19.01.2022 Are you overdue for a test? Continued delay can put your long-term health at risk.* It has never been easier to access care from your GP, with telephone and video appointments available. And it remains safe to visit the clinic if you need an in-person consultation, such as for a test. General practices have strict measures in place to keep patients, GPs and the practice team safe, including infection prevention and personal protective equipment. (If you have cold or flu-like ...symptoms, please call your practice first). Although healthcare is one of the permitted reasons to leave home under COVID-19 restrictions, patients are still delaying seeking the care they need to manage chronic conditions or to address new symptoms. In April diabetes testing rates fell 54% compared to the weekly average in February 2020. Cervical cancer screening rates fell by 67%, tests for prostate cancer reduced by 56%, and other cancer-related tests dropped by as much as 60%. Pathology testing is a vital part of preventative healthcare such as screening tests, as well as for diagnosis and management of chronic diseases. *RACGP - September 2020 media release https://www.racgp.org.au//healthcare-organisations-concern

11.01.2022 When is it OK to call an ambulance? We have had a number of incidents recently where patients were unsure if they should call an ambulance and risked not receiving help in time. If in doubt, always call Triple Zero (000). Call takers are trained to help you and will direct you to the appropriate assistance.... An immediate life-threatening emergency needing an ambulance may include the following: chest pain or chest tightness difficulty breathing extreme pain large burns serious accidents or trauma severe bleeding sudden numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg unconsciousness If you have an emergency and you need an ambulance, you will get one. Every call to Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance is carefully assessed to ensure they understand the patients requirements and to ensure you get the care you need. Less urgent calls go to a Referral Service for more detailed assessment to match you to the service that best suits your needs. 03.01.2022 Travel is an important time to check whether you and your children are up to date with your vaccinations, especially routine childhood vaccinations and boosters. The flu (influenza) is the most common vaccine-preventable disease that travellers catch. NewHope Medical have flu vaccines on hand, both government funded and private ($25). If you received the vaccine earlier in the year, it may be wise to have a booster if travelling overseas, where the flu season is current. The ...chance of getting some diseases (flu, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, chickenpox) may be greater while travelling overseas. Travellers can bring these diseases into Australia. This can lead to disease outbreaks. Dont wait until the last minute to visit your doctor to discuss what vaccines you need for your trip. You might need several doses of a particular vaccine. You might also need time after immunisation for your body to develop full immunity.
03.01.2022 More than ever before, this year it is important to manage any hay fever or asthma symptoms, as these conditions can produce symptoms that are similar to COVID-19. Could you have asthma? If you have hay fever and experience coughing or wheezing with your hay fever it’s important that you check with your doctor to see whether or have #asthma. If you do have asthma, the sooner you get it under control the sooner you’ll feel better. Find out more on the Better Health Channel. www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/thunderstormasthma. Our doctors at NewHope Medical can help you manage your asthma or hayfever. Book online or call 9066 1145.
02.01.2022 A new option for scripts! Electronic prescriptions are coming soon. During your online or face to face appointment, your doctor can send your script directly to your smartphone as an SMS or email. The pharmacy will scan the token and the script is downloaded into their system for dispensing. You can still choose to have a traditional paper script or to have the token sent to a carer's phone or email for them to collect on your behalf.... This offers you more choice and convenience and increases the safe and efficient dispensing of your medications. Ask us at your next appointment!
