They worked for 12 months in NSW and then traveled to Adelaide. James and Hannah had five children but only two survived to adulthood. The family came to the Victorian goldfields by 1854 where James purchased a corner block of land from the first land subdivision in Sandhurst (Bendigo). ... In 1856 James built Specimen Cottage facing Hargreaves St. He built other houses and shops on the block including another cottage and a hotel. In 1864 James' and Hannah's daughter Janetta Ann Brierley married wealthy mine manager Joseph Millin. In the following eight years Janetta and Joseph had four daughters. Joseph Millin died in 1872 aged 41. Son Samuel Brierley was the first student enrolled in 1870 at the Sandhurst Corporate High School. He went on to qualify as a doctor in Edinburgh before returning to Australia to practice. By 1870 James Brierley had built two terrace houses in Barnard Street Bendigo. He moved into one of them by 1872. After Joseph Millin died Janetta and her four daughters moved into the other terrace house.
