25.01.2022 KEANE STREET | Most of us are well-acquainted with Keane Street in Midland, but did you know it's named after Edward Vivian Harvey Keane? He was born in England and trained as a civil engineer before moving to Western Australia in 1882. Despite significant financial constraints, Keane managed to complete the Midland Railway Company of Western Australia line in 1894. ... Check out some of the photos from events including a silent disco, circus fundraiser, cultural events, cooking classes and art workshops. The next event in the series is the iconic Shopping Cart Gymkhana this Friday night. ... Come down and decorate shopping carts and race them around a purpose- built obstacle course to the music of Cale Street's favourite comedy pirate band, Rumskull! 24.01.2022 MORRISON ROAD | The street names for New Junction were chosen to give character and life to the precinct, serving as historical markets that trace back to the early days of Midland's settlement. Just like we all remember the street we grew up on, finding the right name can strengthen our sense of belonging. Names include references to the precinct's sporting history and remembering people who helped build Midland over the years. ... New Junction is bounded by the already established Morrison Road, named after James Morrison. 23.01.2022 Minister for Community Services Simone McGurk MLA has officially presented a $1.3m Lotterywest grant to the City for the New Junction Project. The funding is fo...r infrastructure and equipment for the outdoor youth space and children's play area, across both stage one and two of the public open space construction. Stage one is currently under construction and includes a grassed kick about area and a dedicated youth zone including shade sails, a climbing wall, basketball goals, public art and landscaping. Stage two is scheduled to commence construction in 2020-21, and will complete the play area with cubby houses, a slide tower, wetland play area, climbing equipment and toddler's corral.

Local Perth artist Fieldey has worked with local young people to design a mural for the youth zone, and we now need your help to paint it in January. The youth hangout zone includes a basketball half court, rock climbing wall, rope maze, fireman’s pole, shade sail, hit-up wall and casual seating. 16.01.2022 SAYER STREET | We're continuing to explore the people behind the street names for New Junction. Sayer Street has been a fixture in Midland for many years. It is named after Frederic Sayer who was Legal Advisor to the Midland Railway Company of Western Australia between 1890 and 1897. He was also the State Member of the Legislative Assembly for Claremont and Attorney General of Western Australia in 1981.... Pictured is the departure of the company's first train northward in 1894. 14.01.2022 TREES OF NEW JUNCTION New Junction is made up of functional zones - a Civic zone is centred around the north south path and formalised with gridded tree planting which provide a shaded environment for resting, relaxing and with art works placed through the space. The planting selected originates from local native trees species and those commonly found in gardens in the Midland area and grass type planting similar to the low lying areas along the close by Swan River and broo...ks. Tree species include Eucalyptus Wandoo native to the Perth Hills. Melaleuca leucadendra representing the paperbarks in the wetland areas and Lagerstroemia tuscarora the classic Crepe Myrtle found in many local gardens. With the opening of Stage 1 Weeip Park we can now see 184 trees planted 130 Eucalyptus (Wandoo), 11 Lagerstroemia, 52 Melaleuca and a lovely Jacaranda as a specimen tree. Stage 2 Weeip Park, which will shortly commence construction, will see a further 40 trees planted, comprising of Eucalyptus lane-poolei, Lagerstroemia and Melaleuca. This will bring tree planting to about 30% of what has been planned for New Junction. Over the next few weeks there will be articles providing more details on the types of trees planted at New Junction.

12.01.2022 When you think of Midland businesses, it’s hard to bypass Steve De Mol. He’s the man behind the eight-storey mixed use retail, commercial and residential development under construction on The Avenue in the New Junction precinct. This is an important project, and is the first of three blocks Steve has purchased in the precinct.

With the sun slowly setting, visitors to the space were treated to an array of food trucks cooking up delicious meals and snacks.
