You start your day, shower, put on your makeup, and as you get ready for work, you notice a couple of messages on your phone, oh no, it’s more dramas happening in the family. Your Mum seams to always have an issue with you. You’re actively making life decisions that take you in a different direction from the impact of your family, which just doesn’t align with your ‘family values’. You keep your life private; your friends and work colleagues have no idea what your relationship is like with your Mum, and your determined to keep it that way. You resent the fact your Mum can’t see the genuine person you are, how much you want to be accepted for just being you. When you finally cave in and visit your family, your emotional rollercoaster starts the ride again, stress, anxiety and tears are fighting to be released; and so, you succumb to the expectations placed upon you again, and you arrive with a smile on your face knowing that you will never be good enough to be really accepted by her. The problem is, let’s be real, it’s hard enough to pretend to be someone you’re not, its exhausting; so why do you have to continue to be judged as someone you’re not? You have spoken to counsellors, therapists and occasionally open your feelings to someone you trust, but the feelings of hurt and the scars of your childhood remain as you battle to accept this was your life, this is your life, noting is going to change. Basically, you’re at a breaking point. It’s either fix this now or you’re going to separate yourself from family members and be alone in the world to live by your own expectations. And that’s not fair because you love your Mum, you love your family, and all you want is to feel is the unconditional love a mother can have for her daughter. It doesn’t have to be this way.
