25.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Today, were shining the spotlight on Mrs Leanne Maxwell (Nee Martino), Finance Officer. Leanne is a Newman alumni, class of 1993. She returned as a staff member in 2019. Her favourite thing about working at Newman is. The people and community. She loves running into many past students that now have their children at Newman. In her free time, she loves to.. spend time with her family and friends, have sing alongs with her children and go on holidays.... Faviourite Newman Memory: The Rock Extravaganza back in 1990, lead by the beautiful Jenny Lindsday and no one will forget the star of our show Cher. Favourite quote: Mi casa, Su casa . (My house, is your house.) Fun Facts: Leanne worked in the local Fish & Chip shop at Woodlands for 17yrs until the owners sold in 2009. In her time at Newman, she has taught Pre Primary to year 2.... Her favourite lesson to be involved in is play based activities. She loves building interesting Dramatic play areas and making connections with students. Her favourite thing about working at the Marian Campus the amazing staff she works with and being involved in such an amazing community. In her free time Annette loves to spend time with her husband and 3 sons, listening to a good Podcast, going out for breakfast with her friends, listening to music and drinking lots of coffee. Favourite Newman Memory: Annette loves Bookweek, getting dressed up as your favourite character is so much fun and the Marian campus staff dance for the students is always a laugh. She has lived all over WA as her father was a policeman. Annette also loves to crochet soft toys.

22.01.2022 FAREWELL CLASS OF 2020 At our College Assembly today, we farewelled our Year 12s. Thank you to special guest Dana Hooker, VC for the AFLW WCE who addressed the students and provided them with invaluable tips and advice to navigate life after school. Students in Y7-10 formed a guard of honour as the Class of 2020 exited the Gym. 21.01.2022 The Y12 Industry Breakfast is a new event the College has created for the benefit of our Y12 students. Today approximately 30 guests, from a wide variety of industries, generously gave their time to attend the breakfast and discuss their career paths with our current Y12 students. Guests included representatives from our College, Industry Partners, parent body, and former Newman students. 21.01.2022 Staff Spotlight Today, were shining the spotlight on Miss Katya Anderson, Leader of Learning and Y1 Teacher. Miss Anderson joined the Newman College staff in 2014 and in her time at Newman has taught Pre Primary, Y1 and Y2. Her favourite lessons to teach are either Maths or Reading. She loves reading to the students from her favourite picture books she has collected from different countries and Roald Dahl novels. Her favourite thing about working at the Marian Campus is wo...rking with the most incredible teachers who constantly amaze her with their dedication and love of what they do. The children, and their love and awe for the small things in life, like a beautiful rainbow. In her free time Miss Anderson loves to bake, catch up with friends, go swimming or running and of course spend time with her big furry bear Barney. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.' In his time at Newman, Mr Arnold has taught Materials, Design & Technology Years. His favourite lesson to teach is working with the Year 12s as they design and manufacture their largest and final project at the school. We have entered our Transforming Mission project, which saw the development of our Transforming Mission web series and Student-Led prayer. 18.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Mr. Diamond, This year he is an RE teacher but in the previous 39 years at Newman College he has taught almost everything, but mostly a mix of humanities and RE. Mr. Diamond joined the Newman College staff in 1982. During his time at Newman, he has taught Technical Drawing Y8, Maths Y8/9, Science at Y8 level, Health and Vocational education andY8/9 Humanities, Religious education. His favourite lessons to teach is Hu...manities and Religion. His favourite thing about working at the Marcellin Campus is that every day is different the ‘geography’ stays the same but the people around that geography are always different, every day is a new day! In his free time, he loves to Read Fantasy, Science Fiction and History. Favourite Newman Memory: When he was teaching a humanities class over at our old Siena campus, he noticed two girls down in the back corner of the room with ‘liquid paper’ streaking their faces. he stopped what he was doing and asked them to stand up, and asked them what had happened, they told me they had had a ‘liquid paper’ fight in their RE class. Being an assertive fellow at the time he asked ‘and who is your RE teacher!!!’, only for the two girls, simultaneously, to tell him that ‘you are Mr Diamond!’. They fell over laughing the whole class thought it was the funniest thing since sliced bread, and he laughed as much as the students. After they settled down he sent them off to wash off the liquid paper vowing to pay more attention to them in his RE class in the future! Favourite quote: 1 Timothy 2:7, ‘The Spirit God has given you is no cowardly spirit but one that makes you strong, loving and wise’. Fun Facts: He is 62, born in Auckland, NZ but has lived in Australia since he was 4 yrs old. He played Rugby Union as a boy and still has a love for the game. He barracks for the Eagles, he has been teaching since 1981, he is red/green colour blind, he loves swimming, the ocean, and sunsets. His favourite colour is the blue you find in the night sky just before it goes fully dark following a sunset. His favourite place to go is Canal Rocks, he loves the wildness of the ocean as it smashes into the rockface. He loves teaching, it’s the best job in the world!

18.01.2022 Time for some Newman Nostalgia! In 1969 Year 11 and 12 girls from the Brigidine Sisters in Peebles Road, Floreat, began taking classes in maths, physics, chemistry and French at the Marist Brothers’ College, Churchlands. They were called the Mari-dines. ... (Edit: We had the initials and surnames of these girls, and in the original post, asked if anyone could help in providing the first names. Thanks to fabulous responses from Margaret, Christine and Terese, below, we now have all the girls' names! 17.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Today were shining the spotlight on Mr Roger ONeill, Youth Chaplain. Roger is a Newman alumni, class of 2008. He returned as a staff member in 2017. His favourite thing about working at the College is building relationship with students and staff and working across the various campuses. In his free time he loves to play the drums, hang out with his family and drink coffee.... 17.01.2022 Today we remember 28th Battalion AIF Private Norman Francis Donaldson, who was born in Melbourne and came to Western Australia as a child. His father died when he was young and his mother, a housekeeper, worked where she could; from the P&O Hotel in Fremantle to the Federal Hotel in Perth, to a house in Port Darwin, Northern Territory. 15.01.2022 Congratulations to all students who successfully took part in today's Lavalla Athletics Carnival. We were blessed with good weather and it was so nice to welcome families back onto campus for one of the Years 3-6 community highlights of the year. Although there were some very close contested races throughout the day, in the end it was Knox faction who came out on top winning the carnival with 8059 points. Congratulations also to Delany Faction for winning the Spirit Award. As well as witnessing some terrific individual displays of athleticism today, even more importantly there were plenty of fine examples of sportsmanship and support for each other to be seen today too. 15.01.2022 Draw Near Outreach Program Newman College has partnered with St Dominics and Our Lady of Good Counsel Primary Schools, St Dominics Parish and the Western Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office to help the 500 people seeking asylum on temporary bridging visas who are currently living and working in Perth. With 26 of the 500 people living in the Stirling area, we are called to help those both in our community and outside of it. 14.01.2022 Last year Newman College sent a group of students to participate and experience our Catholic story at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival which connected young Catholics within Australia. 12.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Today, we’re shining the spotlight on John Spriggins, Science Teacher. John joined the Newman College staff in 2007. In his time at Newman, he has taught lower school Science, Year 11 and 12 Physics, Year 11 Chemistry and Year 10 Career Education and his favourite lesson to teach is Physics. His favourite thing about working at the Marcellin Campus is the fantastic staff, students and facilities. Especially the grounds and admin staff, they are amazing, ...you will never meet a more helpful and friendly group of people. Makes coming to work on a wet, dark, cold Monday morning an absolute joy. In his free time he loves to shoot a few hoops with the homies at the park, ride his motorbike to Scarborough Beach and park it in the middle of all The Coffin Cheaters and drink a crisp dry white at The Quokka Arms, surrounded by people who live in Peppermint Grove and Dalkeith. Favourite Newman Memory: Luke Romano blowing everyone away on his electric guitar, at Year 12 Valedictory. It was like watching Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock in 1969. Luke had the whole audience in the palm of his hand. Beth Redwood also at the Year 12 Valedictory, making me cry when she sang like a bird. Jesse (The Hulk) Hogan came down to my son’s footy game, the parents turned to me and stirred me that he would not remember his Year 9 Science teacher’s name. He walks straight up to me and says, How ya goin Spriggo. We then pose for a photo with my son, he puts his arm around me and says, Good to see ya Big Fella. I have never been called Big Fella in my life, it was as sweet as a nut and I floated off the footy ground that day. 10.01.2022 Earlier today Brother Paul visited our new Archives, to view the M W McGovern Trophy for Best Hockey Player (foreground), and to search for a particular article in the Spectrum magazines of 1969 to 1971. (Spectrum was the Marist Brothers’ College journal and spans the years 1965 to 1972.) Brother Paul picked up a bound volume and opened to a random page, only to see it contained a report written by him when he was in Third Year (Year 10)! Serendipity!

04.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Stuart McClorey, Leader of Wellbeing at the Lavalla Campus and Year 3 Red teacher. Stuart joined the Newman College staff at the beginning of this year. In his time at Newman, he has taught Year 3 and while his favourite topics to teach are Religion and Maths, Stuart most enjoys reading aloud to his class. His favourite thing about working at the Lavalla Campus is the students. They make the campus a very welcoming and... warm place to be and it is great to work with them all each day. Stuart loves talking to them, supporting them, or simply just playing handball with them. He is also very lucky to work within a team of highly skilled and committed staff and commends their willingness to go the extra mile for their students. In his free time, he loves to spend time with his wife Lisa and two children, Olivia and Alex. Stuart also loves going to the football and watching highlights of the NBA. Very, very occasionally he even gets to play a little bit of NBA2K (although this seems to be happening less and less these days!) Favourite Newman Memory: His favourite memory this year was something so small I'm sure many people might have missed it! We were presenting the Age Champion and Runner Up awards for the Athletics Carnival at Assembly when we called forward some girls in Year 3. Quick as a flash, Isla Kalebic jumped up when she heard her name, but instead of rushing forward to collect her award, her first instinct was to congratulate one of her other friends, who was also receiving an award. Isla's small act exemplified everything I would hope to see in all of our students. Her first thought was not for herself, but for others and even in the midst of her own joy, she was able to find room in her heart for someone else. This is the stuff I love most about working with children and these are the moments that I will always remember long into the future. I also made many great memories at the Year 6 camp this year! I'm not sure I would rate my 'less than graceful' fall from the pamper pole up there (as I was more terrified than the kids) but it was great to see so many students supporting each other so positively. Fun Facts: Stuart has two brothers - one is a construction manager here in Perth and the other is a scientist who works and teaches at Oxford University.
