25.01.2022 2016 Holden Insignia VXR: Long-term report one The Holden Insignia VXR also introduced some Lion-brand firsts, including automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane-change alert, and adaptive cruise control.... The cabin is a much sportier affair than what were used to from Holden, with eight-way power adjustable Recaro seats (heated and with memory function), an 8.0-inch TFT instrument display, and 'Sport' and 'VXR' driving modes - both changing the Insignias driving characteristics. The Insignia uses a newer version of GMs MyLink infotainment system, which includes digital radio, updated satellite navigation maps and a general redesign of the user interface. Despite being 122mm shorter than its Commodore stablemate, there's plenty of room inside the mid-sized Insignia, plus adequate storage space. Well come to learn just how much of James Wards 'stuff' we can fit into that 500-litre boot - a boot that somehow manages to be 4L up on the bigger Commodore - in the coming months, however. Powered by a twin-scroll turbocharged 2.8-litre V6, the Australian-built engine develops 239kW of power and 435Nm of torque, both at 5250rpm. It may sound flattering, but in practice, theres not as much low-down torque as the setup might suggest, with 100km/h taking around 6.0 seconds to show on the dash. The Insignia feels a bit lethargic off the line, and its hefty 1796kg of weight (76kg heavier than a VFII Commodore SS V Sedan) really shows as youre trying to get moving. Its effect on fuel consumption is also obvious, with the VXR claiming 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres. Once you do get moving, however, the Insignia VXR carries itself very well. Keep the engine working hard at above 3000rpm, and the turbo V6 thrusts the car forward with great ease. When coming into a corner, the AWD system works its magic and the result is that youre able to power through a bend faster than you realise. Fitted as standard with 255mm-wide Pirelli P Zero tyres on all four corners, the whole package not only works well in the dry, but also in the wet.

22.01.2022 A significant chapter in Australian motoring history and a shining example of design ingenuity gets a full-stop as the final Ford ute rolls of the line at Broadmeadows. The last-ever locally built Ford Falcon ute rolled out of the companys Broadmeadows assembly plant at 2:45pm (EST) today, signalling the end of 82 years of Ford-badged, Australian-built light utilities. While there are still a few months to go before the plug is permanently pulled on Fords Broadmeadows opera...tions on October 7, its high-vis wearing workhorse cousin has now officially ended its historic march down an Australian Ford production line for good. Fans of The Blue Oval and even, dare we say it, some Holden-lovers have been steeling themselves for a sad goodbye to the ute, given that Ford created the first coupe utility in 1934 in response to a farmers wifes request for a car that could be [driven] to church on a Sunday and take the pigs to market on a Monday. The resulting design, penned by young Ford designer Lew Bandt, featured a single steel side pressing that merged a two-seat cabin with a deep tub and a drop-down tailgate. Ford set the template, which was subsequently mimicked not only by chief rival Holden, but cars like the Chevrolet El Camino, the Subaru Brumby, Suzuki Mighty Boy and Proton Jumbuck. Even Toyota got in on the ute game with the 1960s-vintage Crown and Corona pickups. Compatriot Nissan decided they couldnt out-ute Ford, and sold a rebadged version of the XF utility as the Nissan Ute between 1988 and 1991. In more recent times the humble ute has steadily lost market share to ladder-framed dual-cab pick-ups, with models like the Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok and Toyota HiLux winning over buyers with the availability of 4WD, rugged go-anywhere capabilities and roomy two-row cabins. The 439,742th ute to be built by Ford Australia a white XR6 manual will make a beeline for Fords collection of museum pieces, where it will spend the majority of its life at the Ford Heritage Centre in Geelong. It will most likely never be driven on public roads, let alone take pigs to market.

18.01.2022 Collett | May 25, 2016 The buzz surrounding a ramped-up attack on the electric vehicle market from German carmaker Mercedes-Benz gathered steam this week, with reports Benz is looking at four new EVs by 2020. The UKs Autocar reports that two of the quartet would be sedans based on the C-Class and S-Class, while the remainder would be SUVs (perhaps GLA- and GLC-Class).... Mercedes may be motivated by the progression of BMWs i EV program, which has delivered the i3 and i8 models to date with a new i5 variant on the way. To that end, Mercedes was also recently rumoured to be considering a sub-brand of its own to compete directly with BMW i. Tesla is also said to be on the radar, supporting claims that C- and S-Class-based models will be first cabs off the rank to tackle Teslas Model 3 and Model S respectively. Further motivation appears to have come from the German government, which has announced new sales incentives on EVs priced below 60,000 (AU$ 93,000) as part of a 1.2 billion (AU$1.9 billion) electric car funds package. 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell Mercedes already has diesel-hybrid and plug-in hybrid models in its range, so the step to fully-electric models could merely be a formality for the carmaker. The stock was uncovered during a police raid in Guangzhou, south-east China. The raid was based on information provided by Toyota Australia. Around 33,000 of the fake parts, including filters, cables and seals, through to safety-critical items such as airbags, brake master cylinders and brake pads, were seized. The replica parts were produced in a large-scale manufacturing facility and authorities also identified around 55,000 packages branded in the style of Toyota Genuine Parts, complete with bar codes and serial numbers. As a result of the settlement of those proceedings, the retailers agreed to contact all affected customers and offer them a refund. Highlighting the scale of the issue, Ford Australia recently intercepted fake parts, including aftermarket alloy rims for FPV models and air intake snorkels and grilles for the Ranger, while Holden has seized counterfeit parts including body panels, alloy rims, grilles, tail lights and radiators. 06.01.2022 Japanese manufacturer hopes Prodrive-fettled WRX STI will help it smash current Isle of Man TT course record for a production car Subaru has unveiled a new road-legal version of its WRX STI that it hopes will set a new lap record this May at the Isle of Man TT. Backed by Subaru USA, the new road-legal race car called the WRX STI Time Attack sees the Japanese car maker rekindle its famous partnership with British-based Prodrive, the company that once prepared Subarus WRC ca...rs (and shared ownership in FPV with Ford Australia). Its not clear what exactly Prodrive has done to transform a standard WRX STI into the Time Attack racer but the wide-body, wider track, differing ride height and completely redesigned aero all hint at significant changes over the standard small performance sedan Already spotted running shakedown tests last week, its also been announced that the WRX STI Time Attack will be driven by the current record-holder and British rally driver, Mark Higgins. Back in 2014 Higgins managed to average an incredible 187km/h over almost 60km of the TT road circuit to set a best time, in another WRX STI, of 19 minutes 26 seconds. Flat out for more than 80 per cent of the lap, with little run off, the road circuit is claimed to be one of the worlds most challenging, and dangerous places to set a fast lap. With narrow roads, big jumps and all manner of trees, rocks and walls to negotiate, with lamp posts and even sheep to avoid, Higgins still managed to top 258km/h in his 221kW 2.5-litre STI. Subaru claimed the only modifications made to the 2014 car were a full roll-cage, internal fire extinguisher, new springs and dampers and a set of grippier Dunlop Derezza tyres. The new car, from the looks of it, has given up on the near-stock approach to record-breaking. Still claimed to be road legal, the highly-tuned WRX STI is expected to be significantly more powerful than the street version. That said, even with 300-350kW, the WRX Time Attack remains unlikely to come close to the outright motorcycle lap record of 17 minutes 3.7 seconds set by John McGuinness in 2015, when he lapped the circuit at an average speed of 214km/h. Higgins and Subaru are thought to be planning to break the lap record ahead of the annual Isle of Man TT that, this year, begins May 30.

04.01.2022 Toyota Australia Toyota Australia has today announced a recall of approximately 98,000 RAV4 vehicles built between August 2005 and November 2012 due to a potential issue with both outboard seat belts of the second row seats. There is a possibility that, in the event of a high-speed frontal collision, the seat belt webbing could contact a portion of the metal seat cushion frame, become cut and separate. If this occurs, the seat belt may not properly restrain the occupant, whic...h could increase the risk of injury to the occupant. There have been no accidents or injuries in Australia as a result of this condition. For all impacted vehicles, Toyota dealers will add resin protection covers to the metal seat cushion frames. These parts are presently being prepared and, due to the number of vehicles impacted globally, it is anticipated that sufficient parts will be available to commence recall repairs by June this year. Affected vehicle owners will be notified by mail advising details of this recall campaign. When parts are available, all affected vehicle owners will again be advised by mail and asked to take their vehicle to any authorised Toyota dealer for rectification. WASHINGTON -- Volkswagen AG and U.S. officials have reached a framework deal under which the automaker would offer to buy back almost 500,000 diesel cars that used sophisticated software to evade U.S. emissions rules, two people briefed on the matter said Wednesday. The German automaker is expected to tell a federal judge in San Francisco on Thursday that it has agreed to offer to buy back up to 500,000 2.0-liter diesel vehicles sold in the U.S. that exceeded legally allowable emission levels, the people said. That would include versions of the Jetta sedan, the Golf compact and the Audi A3 sold since 2009. The buyback offer does not apply to the bigger, 80,000 3.0-liter diesel vehicles also found to have exceeded U.S. pollution limits, including Audi and Porsche SUV models, the people said. U.S.-listed shares of Volkswagen rose nearly 6 percent to $30.95 following the news.
