25.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Mrs Annette Doe Education Assistant, Marian Campus Annette joined the Newman College staff in 2012. In her time at Newman, she has taught Pre Primary to year 2.... Her favourite lesson to be involved in is play based activities. She loves building interesting Dramatic play areas and making connections with students. Her favourite thing about working at the Marian Campus the amazing staff she works with and being involved in such an amazing community. In her free time Annette loves to spend time with her husband and 3 sons, listening to a good Podcast, going out for breakfast with her friends, listening to music and drinking lots of coffee. Favourite Newman Memory: Annette loves Bookweek, getting dressed up as your favourite character is so much fun and the Marian campus staff dance for the students is always a laugh. Favourite quote: "The way I see it, if you want the Rainbow, you have to put up with the rain." - Dolly Parton Fun Facts Annette is the youngest of 5 children and was born in Mullewa. She has lived all over WA as her father was a policeman. Annette also loves to crochet soft toys.

24.01.2022 Earlier today Brother Paul visited our new Archives, to view the M W McGovern Trophy for Best Hockey Player (foreground), and to search for a particular article in the Spectrum magazines of 1969 to 1971. (Spectrum was the Marist Brothers’ College journal and spans the years 1965 to 1972.) Brother Paul picked up a bound volume and opened to a random page, only to see it contained a report written by him when he was in Third Year (Year 10)! Serendipity!

24.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Stuart McClorey, Leader of Wellbeing at the Lavalla Campus and Year 3 Red teacher. Stuart joined the Newman College staff at the beginning of this year. In his time at Newman, he has taught Year 3 and while his favourite topics to teach are Religion and Maths, Stuart most enjoys reading aloud to his class. His favourite thing about working at the Lavalla Campus is the students. They make the campus a very welcoming and... warm place to be and it is great to work with them all each day. Stuart loves talking to them, supporting them, or simply just playing handball with them. He is also very lucky to work within a team of highly skilled and committed staff and commends their willingness to go the extra mile for their students. In his free time, he loves to spend time with his wife Lisa and two children, Olivia and Alex. Stuart also loves going to the football and watching highlights of the NBA. Very, very occasionally he even gets to play a little bit of NBA2K (although this seems to be happening less and less these days!) Favourite Newman Memory: His favourite memory this year was something so small I'm sure many people might have missed it! We were presenting the Age Champion and Runner Up awards for the Athletics Carnival at Assembly when we called forward some girls in Year 3. Quick as a flash, Isla Kalebic jumped up when she heard her name, but instead of rushing forward to collect her award, her first instinct was to congratulate one of her other friends, who was also receiving an award. Isla's small act exemplified everything I would hope to see in all of our students. Her first thought was not for herself, but for others and even in the midst of her own joy, she was able to find room in her heart for someone else. This is the stuff I love most about working with children and these are the moments that I will always remember long into the future. I also made many great memories at the Year 6 camp this year! I'm not sure I would rate my 'less than graceful' fall from the pamper pole up there (as I was more terrified than the kids) but it was great to see so many students supporting each other so positively. Favourite quote: "Educating the mind, without educating the heart, is no education at all" Aristotle. Fun Facts: Stuart has two brothers - one is a construction manager here in Perth and the other is a scientist who works and teaches at Oxford University. He also once spent two years living in and around remote communities across the NT and Kimberley region. #celebrate #shinethroughdiscovery #maristfamily Catholic Education WA

23.01.2022 Today we remember 28th Battalion AIF Private Norman Francis Donaldson, who was born in Melbourne and came to Western Australia as a child. His father died when he was young and his mother, a housekeeper, worked where she could; from the P&O Hotel in Fremantle to the Federal Hotel in Perth, to a house in Port Darwin, Northern Territory. Norman was a founding student at St Ildephonsus College (SIC), New Norcia, the earliest of Newman College’s antecedents, and attended from it...Continue reading

In his time at Newman, Mr Arnold has taught Materials, Design & Technology Years. His favourite lesson to teach is working with the Year 12s as they design and manufacture their largest and final project at the school. In his free time, he loves to sleep, enjoy watching sport from the comfort of the lounge chair, coach his daughters basketball teams and spend time with his amazing family. 20.01.2022 Today our Marist community celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of the Holy Mother Mary. This Feast day is significant for the Marist Brothers and its Founder, St Marcellin Champagnat and underpins their foundations. We are so blessed in this College to have Br Terry, Br Paul, Br Noel and Br John living close to us and still ministering their vocation to our community. Their lives have permeated with the richness of bringing to life the Gospel of Jesus Christ, animating us all to be people of transformation and hope. We recognise their contribution and celebrate our Marist charism and the family spirit it imbues. #feastoftheassumption #mothermary #Celebrate #shinethroughdiscovery #FamilySpirit Catholic Education WA Marist Youth Ministry Perth

20.01.2022 Time for some Newman Nostalgia! These shots are from the recently acquired Sister Dorothea Hickey Collection and feature students at Newman Senior College, Churchlands, 1982. 1982 was a pivotal year for Newman College, and there was a lot going on under the steady guidance of Principal, Brother Valerian Braniff. Newman Siena Girls’ High School, Doubleview, was renamed Newman Siena College and became co-ed, catering to Years 8 and 9. Brigidine College, Floreat, closed - th...eir younger girls going to Newman Siena, and those in Years 10-12 coming to Newman Senior College, Churchlands. As the provenance of these shots is Sister Dorothea, and these students look as if they'd be around 1984 or 1985 Leavers, we're thinking these are former Brigidine students newly joining the Churchlands cohort, and they look quite pleased to be there! The first two seem to be candid shots, with Sister Helen Maher happily buried in the background (right) of the first, but the second two look professionally taken, possibly for the magazine or yearbook. (How's the crisp, modern, starkness in that last shot?) Was this an occasion? Who are they? Were you one of these significant 1982 students? Please comment below, tag or email [email protected] if you can identify them. As always, we're grateful for your help! #celebrate #shinethroughdiscovery #maristfamily #brigidinesisters #NewmanNostalgia Catholic Education WA #brigidine

19.01.2022 This Fathers Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways--both big and small--they lift their children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach. We wish all our Newman College fathers and father figures a very happy Fathers Day. #FathersDay #FamilySpirit #MaristFamily #Celebrate #shinethroughdiscovery Catholic Education WA

19.01.2022 Time for some Newman Nostalgia! What's the story behind this stunning shot? Dale Neill (1961) sets the scene:... "St Joseph's College, Salvado Road, Subiaco, 1961. Four hundred boys, taught by about 16 teachers - Marist Brothers and a few Catholic male lay teachers. No girls. Then our School employed their first female teacher and Miss Horrocks arrived on the scene. A visit from the Pope would have created less impact. Rubber-necking was rife, and boys constantly leant precariously over the rails on the first floor balcony, waiting for a glimpse of Miss Horrocks. One particular Sunday, the Feast of Christ the King, we all headed off to celebrate at Aquinas College. I had never previously spoken a word to Miss Horrocks. She taught Grade 4. I was Year 12. I was the only boy in the school with a camera, and my new Hanimex C35 was loaded with a 20 exposure roll of film. I felt brave, armed with my Hanimex, but I was still nervous as I asked if I could take her portrait. To this day I have never, ever seen anyone blush like she did then - an instantaneous, radiant cheek flush. I guessed that meant yes. This was the result. The bus arrived to take us to Aquinas, and Miss Horrocks invited me to sit next to her. It was the most memorable religious festival I've ever attended. That hat, that dress! She is the picture of elegance. Were you taught by Miss Horrocks? #celebrate #shinethroughdiscovery #maristfamily Hanimex #brigidinesisters #NewmanNostalgia Catholic Education WA #brigidine

17.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Today, we’re shining the spotlight on John Spriggins, Science Teacher. John joined the Newman College staff in 2007. In his time at Newman, he has taught lower school Science, Year 11 and 12 Physics, Year 11 Chemistry and Year 10 Career Education and his favourite lesson to teach is Physics. His favourite thing about working at the Marcellin Campus is the fantastic staff, students and facilities. Especially the grounds and admin staff, they are amazing, ...you will never meet a more helpful and friendly group of people. Makes coming to work on a wet, dark, cold Monday morning an absolute joy. In his free time he loves to shoot a few hoops with the homies at the park, ride his motorbike to Scarborough Beach and park it in the middle of all The Coffin Cheaters and drink a crisp dry white at The Quokka Arms, surrounded by people who live in Peppermint Grove and Dalkeith. Favourite Newman Memory: Luke Romano blowing everyone away on his electric guitar, at Year 12 Valedictory. It was like watching Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock in 1969. Luke had the whole audience in the palm of his hand. Beth Redwood also at the Year 12 Valedictory, making me cry when she sang like a bird. Jesse (The Hulk) Hogan came down to my son’s footy game, the parents turned to me and stirred me that he would not remember his Year 9 Science teacher’s name. He walks straight up to me and says, How ya goin Spriggo. We then pose for a photo with my son, he puts his arm around me and says, Good to see ya Big Fella. I have never been called Big Fella in my life, it was as sweet as a nut and I floated off the footy ground that day. Favourite quote: Pick up your gear and sit on the side bench If it’s not Physics, then it’s just stamp collecting If you think you know everything about Quantum Physics, then you know absolutely nothing about Quantum Physics Never fear, The Sprigg is here Fun Facts: John has more nicknames than any past or present staff member of Newman College: Spriggo The Sprigg Sprigg-Dog Spriggamortis Sprigmeister The Storyteller Darth Vader (I’m a heavy breather) Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (I can be funny or really moody) In his time at Newman, he has worked with The Spoon, The Comb, The Bell, The Bag, The Bat, The Bee, The Box, The Lane, The Rose, The Finn and The Fog. #celebrate #shinethroughdiscovery #maristfamily Catholic Education WA

Being an assertive fellow at the time he asked ‘and who is your RE teacher!!!’, only for the two girls, simultaneously, to tell him that ‘you are Mr Diamond!’. They fell over laughing the whole class thought it was the funniest thing since sliced bread, and he laughed as much as the students. After they settled down he sent them off to wash off the liquid paper vowing to pay more attention to them in his RE class in the future! Favourite quote: 1 Timothy 2:7, ‘The Spirit God has given you is no cowardly spirit but one that makes you strong, loving and wise’. While at Junior College, for good behaviour, John was given this beautiful card featuring St Marcellin Champagnat. If you look closely, you’ll see a tiny circle j...ust below his wrists. John was told at the time that it was a tiny scrap of Champagnat's robe. Turning the card over, we can see the fabric has been sealed inside with the official Marist seal. 03.01.2022 Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2021 is More than a word. Reconciliation takes action, urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 2021 marks twenty years of Reconciliati...on Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process. Reconciliation is more than raising awareness and knowledge. As a nation, and importantly, as people, we need to move from ‘safe’ to ‘brave’ in order to advance reconciliation. #NRW2021 #MoreThanAWord https://youtu.be/ZMhfKLiC5Rk

03.01.2022 Time for some Newman Nostalgia! St Joseph's (Brigidine) School, Subiaco/Wembley, Part I: In January 1942 seven Brigidine Sisters came to Western Australia at the request of the Archbishop of Perth, the Most Rev Dr Redmond Prendiville, to take over, from the Sisters of Mercy, the teaching at St Joseph’s Parish School on the corner of McCourt Street, West Leederville, and Salvado Road, Subiaco/Wembley, and to establish a secondary school in the parish.... It was a challenge, in the middle of the Second World War with all the wartime restrictions, necessity for air raid shelters and countless other hardships - not to mention isolation from their NSW Province - but they were nothing if not committed. The sisters established their convent at an old dairy farmer’s cottage at 12 Salvado Road. It was very basic in layout, totally unfurnished and not in the cleanest of states. Enter a Good Shepherd Sister, who came down with a scrubbing crew who cleaned the place, after which local priests, the Christian Brothers, and the Sisters of St John of God all generously pitched in and furnished both the convent and the school. In 1943 Mothers Mary Imelda O’Brien and Catherine McNamara began the secondary school the Archbishop demanded, and taught secondary girls in the only place available the shed at the back of the convent. As a former dairy farmer’s cottage, the girls schooled there proudly dubbed themselves ‘the Cowshed girls’. _____________________________ Images from the Sister Dorothea Hickey (1955) Photographic Collection and the Town of Cambridge Local History Collection. #celebrate #shinethroughdiscovery #MaristFamily #brigidinesisters #NewmanNostalgia Catholic Education WA #brigidine City of Subiaco Subiaco, Western Australia Subiaco Museum Town of Cambridge Town of Cambridge Library St John of God Subiaco Hospital
