09.01.2022 At Newman Futures, we focus on supporting a strong sense of community here in Newman. That’s why we’re incredibly proud to be celebrating Maggie Lewis an extraordinary person who has done so much to support local families in her role as Manager of the Newman Women’s Shelter over the past twenty plus years! If you’ve been in Newman for a while, you’d have heard of Maggie and the great work she does, but many wouldn’t recognise her in the street. With her humble nature, she does not look for accolades and avidly avoids the spotlight. But Maggie, you make the insurmountable achievable. 09.01.2022 The StreetNet initiative is about encouraging neighbours to get to know one another and boy, have the Wehl Street neighbours in Newman taken it by storm. They had a big street party last weekend, complete with bouncy castle, games and plenty of food and drink to help the folks get to know one another. I always see people around and do the usual polite smile or wave, but now I’ve actually got to meet and chat to them. I definitely feel so much more part of the community now ...Christina said. Read the full article and check out some of their great pictures and hear why neighbour’s Emma and Emily said it was ‘really easy to do’! 06.01.2022 NAIDOC week begins today! This year’s theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. The theme reflects the ancestral ties and continuing connection of Aboriginal people throughout Australia to the lands their ancestors traversed for over 60,000 years. We recognise the Nyiyaparli people as Traditional Owners of Newman and Jigalong and Martu who join with Nyiyaparli in upholding Aboriginal traditions and culture in Jigalong.... We all benefit from the custodianship of Nyiyaparli and Martu who steward care of landscapes, language, cultures and law. This care and heritage enriches and enlivens people and communities throughout Australia. Newman Futures seeks to reinforce these values, to build a sustainable economy that is inclusive to all. This new journey is one of mutual respect, inclusive decision-making and increased access to opportunities. Every person, street, community and organisation in Newman is invited to join the movement to grow together.
