19.01.2022 A great day at Martu a farm, with BHP providing more volunteers. Thank you to ‘BHP’ and ‘Volunteering WA’. One of our core values is volunteerism. Volunteering ...can help us learn new skills, gain experience and sometimes even qualifications! Take on a challenge: Through volunteering you can challenge yourself to try something different, achieve personal goals, practice using your skills and discover hidden talents. Volunteering is good for your mind and body: Volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health. Volunteering increases self-confidence: Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. And the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals. Volunteering combats depression: Reducing the risk of depression is another important benefit of volunteering. A key risk factor for depression is social isolation. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects you against stress and depression when you’re going through challenging times. Working with pets and other animals has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy: Volunteering is good for your health at any age, but it’s especially beneficial in older adults. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not, even when considering factors like the health of the participants. Volunteering has also been shown to lessen symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease. Why Volunteer? Part of being a great volunteer is loving what you're doing. Find something that you're passionate about or something that inspires you, and then find a need in your community. There are dozens of reasons why you should volunteer - you just need to find the one that feels right. 20 GREAT REASONS TO VOLUNTEER Help others Make a difference Find purpose Enjoy a meaningful conversation Connect with your community Feel involved Contribute to a cause that you care about Use your skills in a productive way Develop new skills Meet new people Explore new areas of interest Meet good people Impress your mum Impress yourself Expand your horizons Get out of the house Make new friends Strengthen your resume Feel better about yourself Volunteering often strengthens our fundamental connection with others. It broadens our perspective about our own life dilemmas or disappointments, by learning empathy, when we encounter others who have suffered in ways we may have not experienced. This all so bring insight, that negates indifference and dismissiveness, that robs hope to a community. Volunteerism brings hope, that together, we can change what needs to be changed. 16.01.2022 Today we finally made our first batch of our own Martu Farm soil, without any potting mix or inorganic fertiliser. The only outside resources are some minerals and charcoal. We are pretty excited, as soil, is life.

11.01.2022 First fruits in the orchard. Stone fruit Plums peaches nectarines. It’s been a tough year with Covid. Appreciate our Martu Farm team and the hard work they do daily. This is a huge space with many projects running concurrently. We do NOT get funding (although we have applied lots over the years) so our little team of paid staff is powered by the plants sold in the Newman Nursery shop. This is part of our SWEETR program Supported Well-being Education Employment Training and Re...sidential. We also have a wonderful small team of volunteers. This year Cummings has been sending some diesel mechanics to come and volunteer when they can. We have an amazing tafe lecturer Scott, (but he’s not allowed over much- maybe once in 6 months. So that’s not very effective.). North West Waste Alliance donates a skip bin! With the time that saves going to the tip and the money it saves from shire tip fees, we very much value them. Department of Agriculture Dr Chris Schelfhout is a wonderful partner. While being based in karratha means he can’t get over as much as we would like, FaceTime walks in the orchard are a regular part of our weeks. Thank you to those who shop local. Thank you to local business Newman Hotel. They have been a wonderful client. Rockmelon did ok too
