25.01.2022 27 helpers from The Bush Club were at Newnes today and helped us clean up. It was a wonderful day of healing.

24.01.2022 We are slowly coming to grips with the new world around us at Newnes. We had some welcome rain, we are feeding the wildlife, our Grevillia tree has sprouted new leaves and the rocks glow again from the sun and not from fire.

21.01.2022 We’ve been open again since September and it’s been very busy. Newnes has become a lot more busy due to the Covid travel restrictions and - of course - because we are such a fabulous place. We had six days of steady rain which soaked the place. The Wolgan River has come up but there’s been no flood damage. Nature has come back vigorously one year after the fire, the wombats and wallabies are back and new birds seem to have moved in. Next weekend is Easter and -sorry- we are t...otally booked out. Lithgow council are grading the road but they got delayed with all the rain and will not finish before Easter. So take it slowly, the ungraded part of the road is terrible. But you don’t need a 4WD to get here. Newnes is always beautiful.

19.01.2022 Sorry, last night's post didn't work. Here is Chris' latest video of Newnes: https://drive.google.com//1ReCs3fx1lx75mtqmHJx123wcMM/view

19.01.2022 We had 133 mm of rain since 1st February. The Wolgan River flows full and the grass is an amazing green. But digging into the soil you realize that the soil is still baked dry. The ash has made the soil ‘hydrophobic’ repelling water and all that good rain has run off stripping the forest ground of the organic little matter that remained after the fire. The moisture has only penetrated the ground to half an inch depth, a long way from the roots of the trees.

18.01.2022 We're Back ! The 12-13 September weekend was the first weekend open again at The Newnes Hotel since mid November last year. Strange times, still beautiful. We are very busy, booked out til end of October and sorry, no more room for the long weekend. Lots of Love from Newnes.

17.01.2022 We have a problem: They want to destroy the Wolgan River. Please check out and sign the petition http://chng.it/gLQtWTjQzF... and watch the video Wetlands should not Burn on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSH6yzrXO1A and enjoy the photos of a blissful morning at Newnes Thank you

15.01.2022 Newnes Hotel shuts down I am writing this from Germany where I can see what the reality will be in Australia in two weeks time. This is very serious ! We can't stop this virus spreading but we can "level the curve" by reducing contact with other people. So we have decided to close until further notice. We will refund all cabin booking deposits.... This pandemic will have unprecedented effects on a global scale. If anything it will teach us to change the ways we are doing things just as we will have to change in the face of climate change. Here's a photo from better times. Stay healthy

14.01.2022 Hello Newnes friends, Just a reminder that we are closed over the June long weekend, that includes our private campground, cabins, kiosk and shower and toilet block. Please enjoy a safe long weekend from the Newnes Hotel!

13.01.2022 A time of contrast, from devastation to vivid green, from drought to flood with sun and rain - wash away that pain. Everyone’s happy at Newnes

10.01.2022 Thank you for all your support. This is what we are trying to save. https://www.airvuz.com//Temple-of-Doom---Gardens-of-Stone-

09.01.2022 Hi Folks, Thank you for the many inquiries. We understand you are dying to get out again. While things are getting back to ‘normal’ again we believe we need to do this very slowly. So, we decided to take limited bookings for camping and cabins from September on only. We will be closed for the June long weekend and also for the Glow Worm Marathon should they still decide to run.... We hope you understand and we will see you again towards the end of the year.

09.01.2022 We are still here. The forests around Newnes have all been burned, half by very hot crown fires. But the other half was burned by more gentle ground fire which has left the top of the trees green. All the leaves are coming down now covering the depressing mess that is left of a vibrant eco system. Chris the Gadget Man was here and he took a drone image of Newnes yesterday. Have a look on https://viewer.hangar.com/360 All Wolgan residents came to get together at The Newnes H...otel to share their survival stories after the entire Wolgan Valley burned on 21 December. Such events bring out the best of people and community. In many ways we are glad it’s all over for us. Our thoughts now are with the people who are facing the ongoing fires. See more

06.01.2022 Life is coming back at Newnes - the visitors, the wildlife and the Epicormic Growth on the tree branches and trunks. These form a life insurance for trees and they sprout when triggered by stress, such as fire. These buds, in the outer sapwood, are protected from fire damage by the tree’s bark. They quickly sprout if a Eucalypt gets damaged. The new shoots produce green foliage that enables the tree to survive. Amazing nature.

04.01.2022 We had a great Easter at Newnes - some found it very hard to go home. Ivan sent this amazing photo from Mystery Mountain.

04.01.2022 We had rain and the first green shoots are already sprouting. Isn't nature amazing ! All creatures love Vella pellets kindly supplied by ARC.

04.01.2022 Save the Wolgan River and the planet Have you ever written a submission ? In a mad defiance of all the evidence of negative effects of coal mining, Centennial Coal placed on public exhibition a revised plan for the Angus Place mine located along Wolgan Road on the way to Newnes. This plan covers an enormous area of 10,551ha and Centennial Coal is seeking a consent to mine coal until 2053.... The Colong Foundation for Wilderness has outlined some impacts this plan will have: Five endangered swamps and the wonderful fields of boronia and other wildflowers in those swamps will be destroyed (TriStar, Twin Gully, Birds Rock, Crocodile and Trail 6 will be hydraulically impacted by the mine); Key populations of nationally listed animals - the blue mountains water skink and the giant dragonfly will also be lost due to the swamp damage; Water flows in the Wolgan River that pass through the World Heritage Area and over Wolgan Fall will be diminished, and Carne Creek will also lose its pristine flows (Carne Creek is a key feature of the One and Only Wolgan Resort, eroding its green cachet); The protected Birds Rock Flora Reserve shall be undermined, and this spectacular rock formation shall be fractured; Cliffs will collapse and pagoda rock formations cracked in the mining area; and Grandfathering the Angus Place mine is a transparent attempt to block social adaptation to climate change by locking in coal consumption. If you agree, please send your submission to the NSW planners and politicians on: https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects//12641 (This requires a user name and password, answering the required questions and then lodging your submission). If you prefer to use the Colong Foundation’s submission guide use this link: https://www.colongwilderness.org.au//amended-angus-place-m Submissions close on 28 April 2020. Thanks for your support Happy Easter
