25.01.2022 Sad news this week with the passing of jazz guitarist Brendan Shearson. Apart from playing in many groups, he was a founding member of the Newport Gypsy Djangos who contributed greatly to the repertoire that the group continues to play. Brendan played regularly at the Newport Bowls Club for the BBQ and Bands days, and performed at the early Newport Folk Festivals both as a solo artist and with the Djangos as well as leading the first guitar workshop at the festival with his great mate @Rob Broatch. Vale Brendan - a pleasure to have known and played with you! Michael Stewart

19.01.2022 Lots of time for reflective and historical activities during this long year. One of our members, David Isom has been busy remastering the first recording of the Bushwackers and Bullockies Bush Band. Dave came across a cassette tape of the recording some time back and has been busy moving it on to CD. It is now in a beautiful case with notes about the start of the band. Some of you may not know, but Dave started the group back when he was at La Trobe University in 1971. ...If you get a chance to ask him, he will some stories of their heydays - big gigs, overseas tours and a lot of fun. While Dave left the BBBB years ago, it is now an institution in the folk scene and the group still plays at folk festivals and gigs around Australia. Well done Dave on creating this musical legacy! In the meantime here are the notes and links for the CD - Dave will be very happy to take orders and post you a copy! Vintage Bushwackers CD with Historical Photographs and Information Booklet. This is the first ever recording done by the Original Bushwackers & Bullockies Bush Band ( Bushwackers ) remastered from a sole surviving cassette of recording sessions at Armstrong Studios Melbourne 1973. Included is a booklet of photos and memorabilia and available from [email protected] For $25- including postage and packaging. Here is a link to a sample on YouTube Lazy Harry’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1f_E_EmWcs&feature=youtu.be

07.01.2022 The Newport Community Choir recorded this song to raise awareness for migratory shorebirds and has now been shared on East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership Fb. The flyway is the 'path' the birds follow on migration. Our song and our birds connect us to many countries including Russia, Mongolia, China, Japan, Indonesia, Cambodia and Papua New Guinea, just to name a few. Good work NCC!
