21.01.2022 NEWRY’S EXCITING HISTORY CONTINUED: In 1843 Newry was sold to John Badcock for 604, and 15 shillings, and it was Badcock who erected the flour mill on Newry. A dam was constructed across the South Esk River (which in turn inundated Fenton’s Ford), with a water race cut to power the mill. Cassidy and Preston suggest that the impetus for the construction of the mill was the completion of Pateena Road in 1843 which bypassed the notoriously difficult Muddy Plains Road. - J. P...uustinen, 2019 Stay tuned, Newry’s history will be continued in April’s post. Pateena Road is still the road you will drive along today when accessing Newry Farm. 14.01.2022 We have embarked on a long term project to remove willows, gorse, blackberries and other plants and weeds introduced with European settlement of the area, and revegetate with native plants. We are focusing on the river front and an area in the centre of the island at Newry. Although it had been a particularly dry season after the seedlings were planted last Autumn, we are hopeful that most of the seedlings have survived. It has been a privilege to have Herbert Staubmann, a highly respective local botanist, overseeing the project.

09.01.2022 Visitors to Newry over December and January will have seen the waves of smoke from the Victorian and NSW bushfires. Like so many Australians, we at Newry have been moved by the impact of the bushfires on our fellow Australians as well as the bush and native animals and we have made a donation to Australian Red Cross who are one of the leading charities helping with bushfire relief.
