25.01.2022 We are saddened to learn of the passing on 5 October 2020 of Frank Roberts, whose reminiscences of his time as Loco Sub-Foreman at Bendigo Locomotive Depot formed part of our feature articles about the depot for the October 2020 edition of Newsrail. In his article, Frank wrote about rail safety and gave accounts of attending derailments. He noted the skill and acumen of railway men in re-railing vehicles in various challenging circumstances. Frank, who lived to the grand o...ld age of 93, closed his article with the words "And so, the story continues a life full of memories and satisfaction." Our sincere condolences to Frank's friends and family. Photograph: D3 688 with breakdown van 5HH at Bendigo Locomotive Depot, 22/12/1962. Weston Langford
24.01.2022 Our November 2020 edition is now being printed and will be on its way out to subscribers and retail outlets soon! You can easily subscribe to Newsrail, with various offers available at https://www.vicrailpublishing.com.au/subscribe Our main feature article concerns the construction of the direct, cross-country line between Horsham and Hamilton which opened 100 years ago, on 19 November 1920. Michael Guiney, who previously authored two of the feature articles in our May 2019 C...entenary of Electrification edition, has put together an exceptionally well-researched article on the construction, operation and demise of the line, including the legislative requirements that governed its construction. For the third time this year, we've had so much content to fit in that we've had to go beyond the usual 32 pages. Features Editor Mark Cauchi assembled a beautiful collection of photographs for Michael's article, including steam-era black and white photos by Don Frazer and Andrew Blair, and diesel-era colour photos from the collections of Geoff Winkler, Weston Langford, and the Geelong & South Western Railway Heritage Society. The photos were so good we couldn't decide which ones to leave out, so we instead put an extra four pages in to allow enough space for them all to be properly appreciated. We're pretty confident our readers will be glad that we did! Also in this edition, we also have another of Norman Houghton's 'Ghost Stations' series of articles; this time Norman profiles Poorneet, a long-gone station just beyond Cressy on the windswept so-called "Pleurisy Plains". In addition to these feature articles, all your favourite regular columns are there: - News & announcements - PTV service quality - Tramways - Operations & sightings - Rail works - Preservation - Where is it? - Taildisc Our cover photograph, courtesy of Newport Railway Museum, shows the new roof that rapidly appeared above heritage-listed steam locomotive H220 Heavy Harry during October. A report on the project also forms this month's Preservation column.
23.01.2022 Editor's (non-Victorian) pick: Rotterdam's far more artistic answer to the Comeng that overran the buffer stop and ended up hanging over Wantirna Road back in 1992!
22.01.2022 This was a special one. It was an honour to visit Suzanna Sheed Independent MP for the District of Shepparton and the Shepparton community yesterday to announce... the final piece of the puzzle in the Shepparton Line Upgrade - a project this regional centre has been advocating for for a very long time. Next week's Budget will deliver Victoria's share of the $400 million needed to complete Stage 3 of the upgrade - delivering 9 weekday return services to Shepparton on the modern, reliable VLocity trains we're delivering to the line through Stage 2. With Victoria's $436 million total investment in Stages 1, 2 and 3 and the Commonwealth's support for Stage 3, this line will have received $750 million to deliver modern, world-class regional train services to Shepparton - and I couldn't be prouder.
19.01.2022 Engineers digging the new Metro Rail tunnel are half way, with significant breakthroughs at Parkville and South Yarra. But there's fresh trouble for the West Gate Tunnel, with claims the stalled project is headed for a $3 billion cost blowout. #9News | Nightly at 6.00pm
19.01.2022 From 2029, you'll be able to catch a train directly to the airport in less than 30 minutes from Melbourne's CBD. Construction of Melbourne's airport rail will s...tart in 2022, creating up to 8000 vital local jobs for Victorians as we build a 'turn up and go' service to better connect travellers with our city. This project is well overdue - and we're proud to be getting on and delivering it with the Commonwealth Government.

13.01.2022 October Newsrail - a special 40-page edition - is now being printed and will be on its way to subscribers and selected retail outlets soon! For advice on subscription options, visit https://vicrailpublishing.com.au/shop/?product_cat=newsrail In this edition we have a series of articles concerning the Bendigo Locomotive Depot, including stories from three former employees whose time there dated from the late 1940s to the early 1990s. These stories are beautifully illustrated a...s a result of our discovery of a magnificent photographic collection by George Coop, who took many images of the depot in the early 1960s when its turntable was surrounded by Ks, Ns and Js, and Rs were stabled just outside, all awaiting their next assignment. These photos are supplemented by some beautiful images from Geoff Oliver, Brian Goodwin, and Weston Langford. Our cover image is from the collection of the Geelong and South West Railway Heritage Society. Similar to our experience last year when preparing a special edition focussed on the North Melbourne Locomotive Depot, we noted that there is something of a scarcity of published information on the depot and for this reason, we have also compiled a concise history. We've also reproduced in hi-resolution A3 format an aerial photograph, circa 1930, by the famous photographer, Charles Daniel Pratt. There’s also your favourite columns: * Calendar anniversaries * News and announcements (including V/Locity design awards and a new push to restore rail to Mt Gambier) * Rolling stock (including CLF/CLP reactivation news) * PTV stats * Rail works * Tramways * Operations and sightings (including details of the new Peaco and containerised log services) * Preservation news * Taildisc (with a little extra V/Line orange)
