24.01.2022 100% something like this will happen in academia as we move online, i fear/hope

24.01.2022 Glad shes back. With added Walkley. Her clarity and cut through is very impressive.

24.01.2022 Surely were seeing now that some things are more important than short term market forces??

24.01.2022 Great news - it looks like were getting Walkley award winning war reporter Sophie McNeill onto campus in a couple of weeks to discuss her new book. Keep an eye out for details, ill post them as soon as i have them. Not to be missed.

22.01.2022 Imagine starting your first ever journalism job and then a few weeks later the Covid crisis happens. That was the case for one of our recent grads, and shes one of the subjects of Viral Reporting - the Newsspeak crew interviewing journalists from different fields about what its like to cover the biggest story in perhaps their lifetime. You can have a listen here, and if youre a student whod like to get involved drop us a line.

22.01.2022 On this day 5 years ago we were doing our very first Newsspeak project - Red My Lips - raising money for Rape & Domestic Violence Services Australia. And, by-the-by, rocking the lippy.

22.01.2022 Hoping/assuming we can all just grab a table together on Friday. Look for me, im hard to miss. Who all is coming? GG

22.01.2022 When good information and local stories are needed more than ever...

21.01.2022 Great turnout for the International Womens Day brekkie put on by Women In Media. Lots of our mob here, great to see.

19.01.2022 Dont forget this next Friday, sgonna be good.

19.01.2022 Tomorrow night! Come along and bring your friends :)

18.01.2022 This is so so important, please distribute if you can. Support and information for people who may be experiencing domestic violence, and for family and friends who must be horribly worried:

16.01.2022 From foreign correspondents, to news directors, editors, and reporters putting in the very hard yards to keep us informed, can i just say how proud i am of all the Curtin grads busting their hump out there right now. Its an essential service for a reason.

15.01.2022 We're very excited to be hosting a Q&A session with former ABC investigative reporter Sophie McNeill. Check out the event page for more details!

15.01.2022 Are you accessing good information? Its as good a time as any to realise smart news consumption can help you and those you love (and make you feel heaps smarter when youre dealing with people who get their information from idiots). Also - say what you want about Trump, modern geopolitics because of his stupidity is lol. Until it kills us, obvs.

15.01.2022 5 years ago today we were all standing too close to each other and getting drunk at Women in Media. Look at these talented roosters. Charlie, Tyne, Dom, Mitch, Helene, Shelby, Dylan, Nicky, Herlyn, Victoria, Laura (hiding behind Dylan).

15.01.2022 Congratulations and farewell to Aaron Bryans. A 2015 grad, he has been working For ABC Grandstand and teaching our Docker TV unit for a few years now. Hes been promoted and is moving to South Australia to continue with Grandstand and take on a commentary role, which is fantastic. Well done Aaron, but well miss you.

14.01.2022 Was on RTR getting interviewed by awesome grad Taylah Strano this morning. Discussing AAP closure. I only swore once (maybe twice) cos im heaps profesh...... Glynn

13.01.2022 FFS. (well spotted Keane Bourke)

10.01.2022 Happy International Womens Day. We are blessed with some of the best journalists in the world here in Australia. Anne Connolly won a Gold Quill for Journalistic Excellence just this week for her work which sparked a Royal Commission into the Aged Care sector. Make it your business to find and learn from these amazing women.... Knowing your history doesnt hurt either. Ive always loved Martha Gellhorn: The only way I can pay back for what fate and society have handed me is to try, in minor totally useless ways, to make an angry sound against injustice. GG

10.01.2022 Everyones favourite, Elena Morabito, made a podcast on stories she recorded on her flights home from exchange! Elena took this sad situation for her and turned it into an opportunity to tell a story! Great job Elena

10.01.2022 As a result of the earlier post, Tiff made it onto the news! Although very disappointed as she said she changed out of her Elsa jim-jams for the interview and i feel that would only have added gravitas and colour.

09.01.2022 As well as looking at the issues of the day, uni is such a great time to try and find stories others arent telling. This story from 2017 started with a conversation about what would happen if the power went off for several days. Or the council stopped collecting your rubbish. Basically, how much do we take certain things for granted? Maddy Stephens then went off to meet the preppers here in WA. They simply said hey were not crazy, we just like to be ready for the unpre...dictable. Prescient and well put together, great story:

08.01.2022 An open letter from Newsspeak to those who belittle the study of journalism. http://www.newsspeak.com.au//why-the-study-and-practice-o/

08.01.2022 Crap news for journalism and - by absolute explicit undoubted extension - democracy in Australia yesterday. Dont accept it as inevitable. It was a decision made by businesses using priorities and metrics that are challengeable. https://www.theguardian.com//a-look-back-at-some-of-aaps-b

08.01.2022 We last posted about star student Tiffany Verga when Russell made a great video with her, discussing the benefits of travel during your degree. Then she flew off with her scholarship to study in...um....Seoul for a year. About 2 days before Covid-19 hit... Shes back! Forced home by the virus, and currently in a two-week quarantine in her bedroom.... She made this about her experiences in a Covid hotspot.

07.01.2022 Hello wonderful people! Just an update on the Sophie McNeill event. We've pushed it back a week from the original date, so it will now be Wednesday October 28 with a 6.30pm start. It's now a ticketed event so we can track numbers. They're free and available via this link. Spots are limited so make sure you get a ticket! ... https://www.ticketebo.com.au//q-a-with-sophie-mcneill.html Amelia has put together an epic flyer too.

07.01.2022 Venue for Sophie McNeill is Tannock Hall, corner of Cliff and Croke in Fremantle. https://www.google.com//Tannock+Hall+of+Education,+44+Clif

05.01.2022 The whole notion of flattening the curve you have been (hopefully) hearing about this week is based on the reduction of time pressure on medical services. They only have so much of anything, so the more cases at once, the more likely someone misses out. Check this incredible podcast out. Grad Shelby Traynor recommended it to me in 2016, and its about how it is exactly the job of certain people to decide who lives and who dies when not everyone can be saved. Apart from its ...relevance to today, its an incredible piece of audio storytelling. GG

05.01.2022 This is terrible news and simply shouldnt have happened. As a news outlet Buzzfeed has been worth far more than crap business models built on crap metrics by crap profit seekers. "The unprecedented advertising slump brought on by the coronavirus has hastened the end of an already struggling business model. In January, Peretti posted a 2,500-word blog laying out plans to diversify the ailing businesss revenue streams. Days later it was reported that he had upgraded his Los Angeles home, buying a $5.2m property." Change the damn model.

03.01.2022 Fantastic new project from the Newsspeakers, check it: https://www.instagram.com/p/CF9RqSyjFZU/

03.01.2022 All kinds of YES

02.01.2022 Hello everyone! Hope you are all snuggled up safe in isolation and watching plenty of reliable and informative news, or Netflix, that works too. The news cycle is moving at an unprecedented pace and it is vital to keep the conversation going.... Due to the restrictions on the social gatherings, the traditional face-to-face Newsspeak events are being put on hold for now, BUT never fear!!!! We have decided to suspend membership payments for now and invite anyone to join the private members page. We want to continue the sense of community and learning that Newsspeak offers, just from the comfort of your own home. If you are not yet part of the Newsspeak Members 2020 page, search it up and request to join and we will promptly accept your request. We have been planning some interactive threads and posts to spark conversation and even a potential online quiz night!!! During this time it can be easy to feel down, remember you are never alone and we encourage you all to post anything interesting/funny/questioning/important you see in the news. It is so easy to get involved and we cannot wait to see the conversations and posts to come. *If you are a graduate or member that would like to be removed from the members page, let us know and we will remove you. Stay safe and stay inside! The Newsspeak Team
