20.01.2022 This signal cannon was originally from a ship in the White Star Line, made famous by their ship the Titanic. The White Star Line was initially focussed on the Australian gold mining trade. The UK-Australia route became very profitable as many hopefuls took the voyage to Australia in the hope of discovering gold. Australias population more than tripled between 1851 and 1871 after the discovery of gold. This Cannon also served as the starter cannon for 18-foot yacht races hel...d on the Brisbane River. Yacht racing was a popular leisure activity and sport, and a competitive fleet regularly raced on the Brisbane River. The first Australian Title on the Brisbane River took place in 1845, the year the Newstead House land grant was purchased. Collection Item: Signal Cannon Brass, wood Made by Low and Duff, Dundee in 1889

20.01.2022 Did you know from 1876 until 1918, the owners of Newstead House rarely lived here. James Taylor, who owned Newstead from 1876 to 1891, never lived here. He subdivided and sold most of the grounds of about 24 hectares. These lots became the suburb of Newstead. #brisbane #heritage #discover #housemuseums #brisbaneheritage #brisbanesuburbs #subdivision #newstead

19.01.2022 This beautiful broderie perse bedspread was donated by Mrs M. Gallagher in 1994. The large bedspread, also known as a covelet, measuring approximately 290 x 260cm, is made with the borderie perse, or persian embroidery. Despite the name this is not actually a form of embroidery, rather it refers to the technique of creating a pattern from separate motifs cut from chintz and appliqued onto a ground fabric. This bedspread was part of the exhibition Connecting Threads: Tracing fashion, fabric and every day life at Newstead House in 2016. This exhibition was made possible through the support of Brisbane City Council #brisbane #brisbaneheritage #textiles #newsteadhouse #queensland #housemuseum #heritage #discover #stories

19.01.2022 Did you know Captain Wickham was retired due to the abolishing of the position of Police Magistrate upon Separation from New South Wales on the 10 December 1859 and the appointment of Sir George Bowen as Governor of Queensland. Although Captain Wickham was offered the position of Colonial Treasurer in the new administration, he declined fearing he could not afford to bear the costs of an election. Captain Wickham sought a pension from the New South Wales government, which was refused on the grounds that the responsibility belonged to Queensland. In June 1860 he made a similar request to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, who passed it on to the Queensland Government. Despite strong support by Governor Bowen the request was refused. #brisbane #history #newsteadhouse #colonialfigures #queensland #separation #brisbaneheritage

17.01.2022 Following the Wickhams departure, Newstead was leased to Ratcliffe Pring and his wife Frances. Pring had recently been appointed as Queenslands first Attorney-General. While living at Newstead from 1860 to 1862 Pring served as the member for Eastern Downs in the Queensland Parliament. A controversial figure, described by his biographer as impulsive, vain, hasty in temper, strong in opinion and forcible in expression, Pring also had the reputation of being a drunkard. These faults did not hold back Prings political and legal career. He served as a member of parliament for seven different electorates over two decades. Pring went on to become a Supreme Court judge. #brisbane #qldheritage #discover #housemuseums #brisbanemuseums #residentsofnewsteadhouse

14.01.2022 Ostrich Eggs have been used as decorative objects dating back to the 16th century. They were valued for their rarity and rich symbolism. For the European-trained gold and silversmiths who arrived in Australia in the 19th century, the emu egg offered the opportunity to draw on this tradition and to celebrate the uniqueness of their Australian environment. This beautiful pair of emu eggs from our collection, circa 1880 dipicts this trend with carved Kangaroo and bushman enjoying what looks like a billy tea. #brisbane #brisbaneheritage #newsteadHouse #decorative #collection #emueggs #queensland #discover #history

09.01.2022 Friday Fashion: Did you know in the eighteenth century womens pockets were separate objects tied on by strings around the waist, underneath skirts and petticoats, to be accessed through slits in those garments. 08.01.2022 The gardens surrounding Newstead House Brisbane House feature many flowering plants, and we thank the Brisbane City Council for their wonderful care of this space. Next time you visit make sure you visit Kates garden located on the northern side where you will currently find the Hibiscus in bloom. Interestingly in 1836, the bridge was built over Breakfast Creek and this was the same year that Quaker missionary James Backhouse visited the region. Backhouse spoke of the vegetation in the area toward a brook, called Breakfast Creek, noting a profusion of ferns, flowering shrubs and a hibiscus with yellow blossoms. The native swamp hibiscus boasted a delicate yellow flower with a burgandy eye and small thorns. #newsteadhouse #floweringplants #hibiscus #housemuseum #brisbanemuseums #housegardens

08.01.2022 From 1894 to 1896, Newstead House was home to James Clark, an entrepreneur in Australias pearl industry and founder of an oyster farming business in Moreton Bay. 08.01.2022 Patrick Leslie only resided at Newstead House for a short period of several months. Reading his letter to his father dated 18 June1847 you get the sense that he was looking for more out of life than Newstead was offering. "I trust by economy & perseverance I may be well off yet & altho I am well aware that we will not have such a place as we may get and have the satisfaction of knowing that we are getting on in the world & had we remained at Newstead I must have been an idle man for there was nothing for me to do there nor any way of my making anything." #brisbane #queensland #heritage #newsteadhouse #housemuseum #brisbanemuseum #history #brisbaneheritage

07.01.2022 This stunning gold and Indian beetle wing trim was donated by Mrs W. De Wytt in 1979. In our 2016 publication 'Connecting Threads - Tracing fashion, fabric and everyday life at Newstead House', author Catriona Fisk elaborates on their use in fashion design, "shiny beetle wings have been used to decorate clothing for generations in the parts of the world where these beetles are found, mostly areas of Southeast Asia. As well as being used to decorate, their inclusion in garm...ents in India was indicative of status and became associated with Mughal era ceremonial robes. It is mostly through this Indian assocation that beetle wings came to Western Europe as a decorative style, first as embellishment on the white cotten or muslin gowns that were the height of fashion in the early decades of the nineteenth century, and later as part of a reinvigorated vogue for Indian things from the 1870s onwards. One of the most famous uses of beetle wings as decoration in high fashion of the era was the Worth Peacock Dress worn by Lady Curzon in 1903, which featured both gold thread work and beetle wings to make up the eponymous peacock feathers." 05.01.2022 This tapestry from our collection was made by Helen Gardner in 1877 and depicts the surrender of Mary Queen of Scots in 1568. Mary surrendered her reign after the unsuccessful conclusion of the Battle at Cranberry Hill in 1567, escaping the year after from her captivity in Loch Leven Castle only to be finally defeated and taken into England where she passed the remainder of her life. Mary surrendered her reign after the unsuccessful conclusion of the Battle at Cranberry Hill ...in 1567, escaping the year after from her captivity in Loch Leven Castle only to be finally defeated and taken into England where she passed the remainder of her life. Several copies of this scene exist in tapestry form, all taken from a painting by Scottish artist Alexander Chisolm in the early nineteenth century. The many versions of this tapestry lend credit to the thought that this scene was sold in kit form as a popular needlework activity in the later 1800s.
