23.01.2022 The Indefinite Sleepout to End Indefinite Detention began with a group of doctors pledging to sleep outdoors in solidarity with those refugees languishing in indefinite detention in Australian refugee camps, some of whom have been in detention for over 7 years now. Their commitment in these difficult times is inspirational.

22.01.2022 We're so excited that X-Ray Newstead will be offering ultrasound services from next Monday 5 October. It will be amazing to have this service so readily available to us at Newstead Medical, and we have no doubt it will provide an invaluable addition to our centre!

22.01.2022 Dr Georgia Bavin has a special interest in women’s health and the care of mothers and babies in the first year of life including infant sleep, feeding, unsettled behaviour, and maternal mental health. She follows a holistic evidenced-based approach termed Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC or the Possums programme) and is the first NDC accredited practitioner in Tasmania! Georgia is also working towards becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She is keen to work with your family to help improve any challenges you are facing with your baby. Please ensure you tell the receptionist when booking so that we can allocate a 1 hour mum and baby appointment. Fees for this service are on our website: https://newsteadmedical.com.au/fees/

20.01.2022 Amazing news this morning that influenza cases are down 99% on this time last year, with only 208 confirmed cases last month in Australia, compared to >30,000 this time last year. Researchers attribute this primarily to social distancing and good hygiene, as well as more people than ever being immunised. Great work everyone!

20.01.2022 Many of you will already know Dr Cameron McClure, who’s been working with us since the start of the year. Originally from Queensland (like our other northern doctors Amy, Jane, Jason and Toby), Cam's wife Susanne grew up here, and tomorrow we’ll introduce you to their beautiful newborn baby girl Esther! Cam is also an Emergency Medicine registrar, and we’re hoping to utilise his expertise when our Urgent Care Centre opens. Though he's been working remotely due to COVID and being a new father, he's still accepting new patients and we look forward to him joining us back in the clinic soon!

18.01.2022 Great to be joined by the Minister for Health Sarah Courtney MP today, to discuss the importance of flu vaccination, particularly in vulnerable populations. Though seasonal rhinovirus is currently circulating, we've so far managed to keep flu numbers at record lows this year. We think the Minister has done a stellar job in helping to lead us through this pandemic, and couldn't think of anywhere else in Australia we'd rather be!

17.01.2022 Newstead Medical would like to welcome Dr Danielle Payne! Danielle grew up in Launceston, before leaving to study Medicine at Monash University. She worked in Victoria for a while before returning home, and we're thrilled that she is now working with us! Danielle has a special interest in women's health and pediatrics, and enjoys dancing, painting and photography. She's accepting new patients though her appointments are filling up quickly! To make an appointment book online t...hrough our website https://newsteadmedical.com.au/ or call us on 6331 1088. #newsteadmedical

17.01.2022 Almost 80% of Australians have reported increased psychological distress, anxiety and depression since COVID-19 according to Plos One. Do you know how to access mental health services, and what support is available? We think that this article helps with navigating the system.

17.01.2022 Today on the 201st anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, we celebrate International Nurses Day, and give thanks to our wonderful team of nurses across Newstead Medical , Kings Meadows Medical Centre and Urgent Care Centre Our nursing colleagues have been frontline in protecting and supporting us through COVID-19, and continue to improve the health and lives of our patients everyday. #InternationalNursesDay

15.01.2022 Wishing our patients, staff, families and the Launceston community a safe and happy Easter. Though we hope to soon be open 7 days a week, the Urgent Care Centre will be closed over this time, reopening 8am Tuesday, with our partners at X-Ray Newstead reopening on Wednesday.

15.01.2022 Dr Toby Gardner recently talked to the Examiner about the national vaccine rollout (though we're not sure about him being referred to as "Practice Manager"!)

15.01.2022 Tasmania has the highest COVID vaccination rate in Australia, utilising 100% of our allocation. We still have spaces available in our COVID vaccination clinics for over 70s and those over 50 with a chronic medical condition, and we continue to recommend vaccination for these vulnerable groups as soon as possible. To make a booking please call 6331 1088 or book via our website www.newsteadmedical.com.au... #newsteadmedical #covidvacccine

15.01.2022 October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Tasmania women, with 1 in 7 women being diagnosed with breast cancer before age 85. BreastScreen Tasmania provides free screening to all women over 40 every 2 years; the earlier we can pick it up, the easier and more successful treatment is. Spread the word!

13.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day. 2020 has challenged us in ways previously unimaginable, though has also shown our capacity for kindness and creativity. Some of our friends are doing it far tougher than others this year, particularly those in Victoria and overseas, so be sure to check in with them regularly to ask "Are you okay?"

13.01.2022 Dr Ed Garrahy hails from Limerick, Ireland. After completing Medicine at University College Cork and training at Beaumont Hospital, Beaumont, Dublin 9, he relocated to Australia in 2015. Then in 2019 he succumbed to Tasmania's charms, moving here to stay. An avid reader and awesome soccer/futsal player, he also works part-time at the Launceston Clinical School University of Tasmania, and we love having him as part of our team! Ed's accepting new patients, through both Telehealth and in-practice for those needing to be examined in person.

12.01.2022 The teams from Newstead Medical and Kingsmeadows Medical Centre came together on Saturday, on such a cracking day for our annual Winter Warmer! It’s been the most challenging year of our lives as I’m sure you’ll all agree, so we were all so excited to spend some downtime together. Massive thanks to Launceston PCYC for getting us moving with socially distant Zorb ball soccer and Taiko drumming, Fi at Moores Hill Winery for introducing us to their amazing Riesling Sekt among ot...her delicious wines , Turner Stillhouse for teaching us the art of gin, oak and botanicals, Hubert & Dan for a beautiful lunch at Tamar Ridge Wines (with spectacular wine), and the inimitable Brodi Lucas for his bingo at the always excellent Pizza Pub Launceston! And of course to Charlie from Tasmania Coachlines for getting us to our mystery destinations safely! So grateful to have such an amazing team! See more

08.01.2022 Having spent the last two years doing locums in Tasmania, Dr Sandra Newfield and her husband relocated from Wollongong to Launceston in early 2020, just before COVID-19 reached our shores! She enjoys all aspects of General Practice, and is working with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sandra loves gardening, walking and spending time with family and friends, and is accepting new patients.

08.01.2022 Great to see Launceston Grammar also getting on their crazy socks in the Grade 12 Walkathon fundraiser for Fight MND . #crazysocks4docs #socks4docs

08.01.2022 Following the recently announced changes to COVID-19 Medicare incentives our consultation fees for Telehealth appointments will change from Tuesday 1 October. We've largely returned to seeing patients face-to-face (after COVID screening). We will still bulk bill repeat prescriptions and re-referrals done via Telehealth, and of course our safety net arrangements still apply for you and your family members consulted via Telehealth. More information is available here: https://newsteadmedical.com.au/fees/

07.01.2022 Private flu vaccinations have arrived. We’re now able to provide on-site vaccinations for businesses, to avoid the disruption of employees having to leave for their vaccination. While we still don’t know how this flu season will play out, there are already a lot more respiratory viruses circulating than last year, and one important thing we can do to prepare is to vaccinate against influenza. If you think this might suit your business, contact us to find out more through [email protected]. Public flu vaccination clinics will begin on 17 April. #newsteadmedical

07.01.2022 Dr Amy Leung was born in Townsville, Queensland and grew up on beautiful Magnetic Island, finishing her schooling on the Fraser Coast before heading back up to FNQ to study Medicine at JCU: James Cook University, Australia. She came to #tasmania in January with her husband on an adventure, to go hiking, discover our beautiful state and hopefully settle down. It's definitely different down here this year, though we're hoping she enjoys her first Tassie Winter!

06.01.2022 Introducing Esther Olivet McClure, the beautiful new baby girl to Cameron and Susanne. Welcome to the Newstead Medical family!

06.01.2022 Car park flu clinics return this Sunday 18 April. Clinics are open for bookings for all patients aged over 10. Both government-funded vaccines for eligible patients and private vaccines will be available. Remember that you can’t have your flu vaccine within 2 weeks of a COVID vaccine, and you should be free of cold and flu symptoms.... Clinics will be held every second Sunday until the end of May. Call on 6331 1088 between 10-5pm weekdays to secure your place. #newsteadmedical

05.01.2022 Many of you will have seen Dr Jane Dhann at Newstead, who's been working with us since mid 2019. However we're super excited that she's now joined our team full-time! Originally from Queensland, she worked as a Speech Therapist before studying Medicine at Griffith University (while still working as a Speech Pathologist!) She relocated to Tassie with her young family in 2018 and has never looked back! She particularly enjoys looking after patients with communication difficulties, and loves gardening and cooking in her spare time.

05.01.2022 We've all downloaded the COVIDSafe App, which is endorsed by our college the RACGP. Don't worry, it doesn't actually "track" you; if someone tests positive and they have the App, it allows easy and rapid contact tracing of all the people they've recently been in contact with for >15 mins at 1.5m (close contacts). This way Australian Government Department of Health can quickly identify and isolate close contacts, quash COVID, and we can all get back to normal life!

05.01.2022 Dr Cam McClure is back today, working in Urgent Care! Cam has a strong background in Emergency Medicine, currently working in both the LGH ED as well as in Gen...eral Practice. He’ll be working with us in Urgent Care every second Friday at this stage. Welcome back Cam! #launcestonurgentcarecentre

02.01.2022 This Friday 5 June is Crazy Socks for Docs 2020. The movement created by Dr Geoff Toogood is to raise awareness about doctors who may be struggling with their own mental health. You can support the initiative by wearing crazy and/or odd socks on Friday, then uploading a photo to social media with the hashtag #crazysocks4docs or #socks4docs. It's that simple! https://www.crazysocks4docs.com.au/

01.01.2022 Before a life in medicine, Dr John Lim was a high-school teacher! His career change saw him study Medicine at the University of Sydney, before he relocated to Launceston. He worked at the Launceston General Hospital with his younger brother Zhen, an ex-Launceston Clinical School student who is now a senior Medical Registrar! John worked in all areas of the hospital, and as a Psychiatry Registrar before moving in to General Practice. He enjoys all aspects of General Practice... and has a keen interest in current affairs and home-cooking for his young family! #newsteadmedical
