24.01.2022 Attention cat owners! Here at the Newton Veterinary centre we have seen two cases of Feline Enteritis, also known as feline parvovirus and feline panleucopenia. This virus is highly contagious and affects cats of all ages but is mostly severe and life threatning in cats younger than 12 months. The virus spreads by direct contact with infectious cats and their secretions such as; faeces, urine, bedding and also saliva. Infected cats can shed the virus for up to 6 weeks but the... virus can persist within the enviroment for up to one year following infection. Feline parvovirus infection is one of the greatest major disease threat to any cat, and infection carries a very high mortality rate, particularly in unvaccinated kittens. In kittens over three or four weeks of age and in adult cats, the virus causes a very severe gastroenteritis, following an incubation period of five to nine days. Affected cats develop acute onset haemorrhagic vomiting and diarrhoea and some cats die rapidly. The virus causes severe damage to the lining of the intestine and also travels via the blood to the bone marrow and lymph glands. Viral replication at these sites leads to a marked depletion of white blood cells. Infected cats and kittens usually have a fever, are obviously depressed and will not eat. Some cats may die before even showing signs of gastroenteritis. Affected cats often die from dehydration and massive secondary infection, so aggressive support with intravenous fluids and broad spectrum antibiotics are crucial, but even with this, a high proportion of affected cats may die. Feline enteritis is much easier prevented than treated, it is imperative that all cats and expecially kittens are vaccinated against this horrible life threating virus. See more

23.01.2022 This is Bambam! He was caught in a cat trap and brought into us at the Newton Vet Centre. Now the first thing we do is check for ownership eg microchip, desexing or collar and go from there. This guy had none of the above was on point of starvation had poor condition and after all that still enjoyed the company of us humans. So what do we do next??? We Desexed, Microchipped, vaccinated, fleaed and wormed him and are now looking for a good home for him. We hate to see animals euthanasied especially such friendly loving ones like Bambam. If you are interested or know anyone that would be interested please share this post or contact us at the Newton Vets 8365 5010 He is approx 3 years of age and has so much love to give.
