22.01.2022 WORKING SAFELY AT HEIGHT Controlling the risk of falling & selecting the right control measure for preventing the risk of falling, Ask yourself these 3 simple questions: 1. Can the work be done on the ground, to eliminate the need to even work at height at all?... 2. Can a fall be prevented by working on a solid construction? That is, in an existing building or structure (such as a flat roof with permanently installed guard rails around the edges). 3. Can the risk of a fall be reduced by providing and maintaining a safe system of work, such as a fall prevention device (like installing guard rails); or if thats not practicable, a work positioning system (like an industrial rope access system); or if thats not practicable, a fall arrest system. Working your way through these questions in this order will help you come up with the best solutions, which may even be a combination of options. If you are having trouble working out what to do contact Newton Safety & Consulting Service & we can assist in working out the right method or solution for you.

16.01.2022 SWMS REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGH RISK WORK. A PCBU must prepare a SWMSor ensure a SWMS has been preparedfor high risk construction work activities. # A SWMS must be prepared before this work starts. For all other construction activities a SWMS is not required. # However, a PCBU must manage risks to health and safety by eliminating or minimising risks so far as is reasonably practicable.... # A principal contractor must also obtain the SWMS before high risk construction work on a construction project starts. Who should prepare a SWMS? The person responsible for carrying out the high risk construction work is best placed to prepare the SWMS in consultation with workers who will be directly engaged in the work. # Generally this means a SWMS is prepared by the builder for their workers, or by the subcontractor for their workers and themselves.# The principal contractor, builder and subcontractors should consult with each other to determine who is in the best position to prepare the SWMS.# Managers, contractors, leading hands and workers should all be involved in developing a SWMS. Consulting workers is important so they understand the detail of the SWMS and what they are required to do to implement and maintainrisk controls. # Sharing information and using the knowledge and experience of workers will help make sure the work is performed in accordance with the SWMS.# If there is a Health and Safety Representative at the workplace they should also be consulted when developing a SWMS. If you or company is having trouble with your SWMS contact Newton Safety & Consulting Services as we will assist you in getting it right.

16.01.2022 "Hearing Protection" Did you know that wearing the wrong type of hearing protection is dangerous to your hearing & safety. Hearing protection is NOT a one size ...fits all. Earmuffs and earplugs all have different protection levels and the result can change dramatically on individuals. Hearing protection should not be selected on the price is right and we like the new style that the salesman brought in! To select the correct protective the following information needs to be considered: 1/ Type and level of noise 2/ Degree of hearing loss within the industry. 3/ Additional protective equipment that needs to be worn 4/ Environment 5/ Cost 6/ Reliability and maintenance, along with comfort Not taking this information into account when purchasing hearing protection often means that the wrong type of hearing protection. Lifting off your earmuff to hear means the wrong type of hearing protection has been issued to you! "You need a SAFE solution". Workers may believe they are looking after their hearing but the hearing screen will show a different story, so a review current practices & environment within which the employees work needs to be audited. By contacting Newton safety we can assist you in meet your goals.

15.01.2022 "Technology that takes Hearing Conservation to the Next Level Overview". 1: What is the 3M E-A-Rfit Validation System? An objective, quantitative hearing protector fit-test system.... It is technology that takes Hearing Conservation to the next level. Environmental controls, hearing protectors, and on-the-job training are the first steps to protecting your workers against noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). 2: Fit test your hearing products The E-A-Rfit system assists in achieving optimal fit through hearing protector selection and employee training. In less than 8 seconds per ear, the system generates a personal attenuation rating (PAR) that indicates a workers noise reduction levels for a given fitting and hearing protector. Compare ratings across hearing protectors and fittings to determine best fit. 3: Get objective, personalized results Researchers at E-A-RCal Laboratory developed proprietary algorithms to analyze sound pressure inside ear canals. This in-the-ear testing procedure differs from many other systems on the market by providing quantitative data that does not rely on subject response. Fit, train, and motivate every worker using their Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR).

15.01.2022 What are you exposed too, we can help in assessing noise levels in your workplace.

14.01.2022 Best practice for any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is to ensure the right fit. Fit testing of ear plugs is becoming a mandatory component across industries throughout Australia. Australian Standards AS/NZ 1269.3:2005 Occupational Noise Management, Part 3 Hearing Protector Program, recognise this requirement & the 3M EARfit program builds and supports this compliance. By testing to ensure the ear plugs fit and really do provide the adequate seal to the wearers ear, is the key outcome of the 3M EARfit Program. Your Test Results: Each test conducted comes with a computer print out of the test results & on completion of the ear plug fit test a copy is sent to the employer so it can be kept on their employment file, also on re-visits the data can be reviewed from previous testing.

14.01.2022 Just a couple of questions to ask work. 1/ How long has it been since your company has done a review on the risk assessments for the plant & equipment used on s...ite. 2/ Has there been a review of the confined spaces & signage on site & has a complete register been setup for future reference. 3/ Are all emergency stops labelled so people know what it is actually stopping. 4/ Is there an evacuation plan in place & is there a manual to help in the evacuation. 5/ When was the last time a building safety audit completed for the purpose of occupancy safety. If you think you need a hand in sorting some of these out, then give Newton Safety & Consulting Services a call.

08.01.2022 BREATHING AIR TESTING Newton Safety can now provide a service to industrial sand blasting, paint booth & diving compressor environments in the way of breathing ...air quality testing, using the instrument of choice for monitoring the purity of breathing air in the low pressure range. In combination with the Drger Oil Impactor, our system achieves an unprecedented quality of breathing air monitoring for end user by Using the Drger Aerotest Alpha Test System . Contamination in compressor supplied air can be a serious health risk. Compressor breathing air quality testing provides confidence to the Employer to provide a safe place of work, and to workers that rely on the system for air. The breathing air quality testing requirement for air supplied respirators is often one of the least understood elements of compressed-air-supplied breathing air equipment. Workplace Health and Safety Law requires that breathing air meet specified requirements and be tested to an agreed schedule as detailed in Australian Standard 1715:2009, Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Equipment. For more information give us a call.

03.01.2022 Did you know that Construction workers are among the most affected by industrial deafness? Safe Work Australia research shows that the construction industry is the third noisiest industry sector. Many of the workers are surprised at this result, particularly when they may have considered it to be a Quiet Day during which they only conducted the occasional noisy activity. However the meaning of a Quiet Day to a Tradie is somewhat different to somebody who works in an Offic...e. Are you at risk? If the noise around you makes it necessary for you to raise your voice to make yourself heard to somebody one metre away, your hearing is probably at risk. Repeated exposure to excessive noise will eventually lead to permanent damage. The tools and equipment that pose a risk of noise induced hearing loss include: Circular Saws Piling hammers Concrete breakers Manual hammers Nail Guns Workers in the vicinity of a noisy plant Service and equipment maintenance workers. 03.01.2022 NEWS ABC Tasmanian construction contractor Sherwood Enterprises was not following its own work safety plan when a 20-year-old employee died, an inquest has heard. The employee from Launceston died from head injuries after he fell from the roof of the Devonport Homemaker Centre in August 2012.... The employee had been working for Sherwood Enterprises, which was sub-contracted by construction company Fairbrother to install roofing, box gutter guards and drain sumps at the shopping centre. In September 2014, the company was fined $55,000 for failing to ensure an employee was safe from injury and risks to health. Plan to use safety mesh changed In his opening statement, counsel assisting the coroner Simon Nicholson said Sherwood Enterprises had developed a safe work systems plan prior to starting the job, which contained provisions to ensure there were no "live edges" where workers could fall off the roof. He told the inquest that under the plan, the roof would be covered by mesh that would catch any workers who tripped and fell, and the method of installing the mesh would not require workers to stand on the roof. However, the plan changed when roofing iron was craned onto the roof earlier than planned and the pouring of a concrete slab meant scissor lifts could not be used. This forced workers to stand on the roof using harnesses that attached to fixed points, instead of the more usual fixed-line method. The employee detached his harness from the roof in order to fetch a drill, and fell to his death when he stepped on an unsecured box gutter which gave way. Mr Nicholson said evidence would show if Sherwood Enterprises original safety plan had been followed or sufficiently adapted, The employee death would not have occurred. "If the employee was not working by a live edge and an unsecured box gutter he would not have died," he told court.

01.01.2022 Safety Management System Auditing. Management systems audits have a wider scope, and although addressing hazards and risk controls, it also looks at workplace s...tructures, planning activities, responsibilities, implemented procedures, review cycles and measurement and evaluation issues. The management system, as such, is a planned, documented and verifiable method of managing WH&S hazards. What makes it a system is the deliberate linking and flow of processes that creates an intentional way of managing WH&S matters. A basic occupational health and safety management system has some of the following characteristics: 1/ Existence of a health and safety policy that is communicated to staff 2/ Management commitment 3/ Allocation of responsibilities and accountability for health and safety matters 4/ Controls for suppliers, sub-contractors and purchasing 5/ Health and safety consultation 6/ Hazard identification, evaluation and control 7/ Provision of information and training of star 8/ Incident recording, investigation, analysis and review; and 9/ Measuring and evaluating work health and safety performance. Many workplaces undertake these audits on an annual basis as the amount of resources and time required to conduct a management systems audit can be substantial. So Contact Newton Safety & Consulting Services and we can assist in your next system audit.
