16.01.2022 The Life of a Defender. Being your teams defender isnt always fun. Everyone forgets me when my team has won. They praise the kid who scored the winning goal and forget the other kids who give our heart and soul.... Everybody says to me that Im so good at the back. What they dont know is, that I wish I could attack. Dad wants me to show them that Im committed and tough, but Ive not scored all season and Ive really had enough. I stand and admire while the strikers get the glory, they take all the praise but my game has a different story. From the first minute I give it my all, Manager is shouting again KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL Sometimes I think Im in defence just because Im tall. Sometimes I wish, I was born really small. I put my body on the line to make sure we win. Never passing across the back because I know thats a sin. I work really hard to win the ball back and as soon as I do, Im told to give it a smack. I try to be fearless and show Im now scared, but everyone screams dont mess about with it there!! This games really boring, theres not much to do. Weve had about 50 shots but theyve only had 2. I dont get why its me in defence every game. We all love to score, but we arent treated the same! I ask if I can move, just to have a go. Maybe be a striker? But the answer is no. The ball comes my way but the striker is fast, he runs off with the ball as he whizzes past. I run and I chase him with everything Ive got. Hes running at goal so theres no way I can stop! As he steadies himself ready to fire his shot. This is my chance, ready or not. I throw my left leg in front of the ball. Jumping and sliding, I give it my all. The ball goes out as the parents all scream! I stopped the goal and did it for my team. Suddenly, everyone is clapping at me. The noise is amazing, I feel like Im on tv! This feels amazing, I feel like Ive scored. I blocked the shot and the crowd all roared. Maybe playing at the back isnt so bad. I look over and smile, catching the eye of my dad. Hes beaming with pride and shouting well done. Hes proud to be my dad and Im proud to be his son. I might not be the kid that the history books remember. But Im strong and Im brave.... I am a Defender. Being a defender isnt EVERY kids dream. Encourage your child to try all positions and find the one that they love playing the most. Remember, after all... its just a game that they play to enjoy. NLSA

12.01.2022 Young players visualise a football match in the same way they see it on TV. The nerves, the anxiety, the frustration they feel is based on their own perception ...of how big a game really is. As coaches we try to help children understand that there is no difference between the training pitch, the playground and the game on a Sunday. However a child will always dress up the occasion in their head. Parents teach their children to dream, imagine and be creative with their thoughts as they grow up and this leads to children seeing a much bigger, more complicated picture on a matchday. Does your child get easily frustrated? Does your child not play the same level that he does in training on a Sunday? Does your child give shooting opportunities to other players instead of shooting themselves? All these things can be down to a child seeing the game as a huge spectacle. An occasion that is so big that they let their emotions get the better of them. They fear mistakes and critique their performance with every good or bad touch. Trophies, League tables, medals and celebrations all build the significance and importance of the occasion. In some players this can manifest as nerves, upset or even anger when on the pitch. Our advice is to take the result, the scale and the importance away from the game. Pre-match talks, chats in the car on the way home and even instructions during games can have a negative effect rather than a positive one if you dont choose your words carefully. As a coach, a parent and a player we should always remember that The Beautiful Game is exactly that... just a game. Catalan Soccer

04.01.2022 NLSA Philosophy DISCUSS, not DICTATE. Coaches often spend too much time telling kids what they should or shouldnt be doing. ... Whilst the coach may have a higher level of knowledge, this way of giving information to kids can make them switch off and become disengaged. By opening up a discussion with your players, you can change a session for the better. Question them on their understanding and knowledge, then build them up from there. You can often find that kids are more likely to listen and much more likely to care about the outcomes of the session if they feel they have had some input themselves. Over the years, one thing is for sure is that we have been shocked at times, just how much knowledge young kids have of the game! So dont assume you know it all and they dont. Start a debate, discussion or conversation with your players to see just how much they really know.
