18.01.2022 People living with an amputated arm for over twenty 20yrs might expect their rotator cuff on their non amputated arm to have more wear and tear than the average person. But they dont. In fact, the rotator cuff in their amputated arm has more tears in it, and its not getting used. We have to ditch wear and tear commentary. ... Tendons want load, and they adapt to load. We all should be keeping our tendons strong and supple through use, just dont ramp up your exercise too fast or you may develop niggling shoulder pain from under preparedness. Thats what makes them irritable. Other factors influencing tendon health are probably age, genes, smoking history, and luck. If you know someone with a niggling rotator cuff perhaps share this post with them. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28707116

11.01.2022 Hip protectors are used less and less because at a population level they dont work. The reason they dont work is because theyre not worn. The reasons theyre not worn are unique to the individual. So while it doesnt make sense to implement hip protectors at an organisation level, such as in an aged care home, it certainly makes sense to consider them at an individual level for any person at risk of falls and fractures who would be likely to wear them every day as they s...hould be worn. This new study found that when hip protectors are worn, the risk of hip fractures was reduced nearly 3-fold. https://t.co/IpJXB5D7oH?amp=1

08.01.2022 Atrovent, spiriva, ditropan and VESIcare are just a few commonly prescribed drugs from the anticholinergic family. These drugs are prescribed for urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and COPD among other reasons. Anticholinergic use for 3 months increased the risk of dementia on average by an estimated 46%.... It’s been known for a while that there is an association, but now this meta-analysis reveals just how strong the association is. If you’re taking anti-cholinergics please book an appointment with your GP specifically to discuss this publication and your options going forward. The link is in the comments.

03.01.2022 Hello everyone. Meg here. I have a favour to ask on behalf of dietitian Dr Katherine Cullerton. By doing this good deed youll also have the chance to win $100 Coles Myer voucher. Win win. Katherine is conducting a short survey asking Australians what they think of different nutrition policies. This research can influence government policy, but only if it is truly representative of the diversity of opinions in Australia. ... So far there have been a lot of respondents who are women living in metropolitan regions, most of whom have university degrees. You can help Dr Cullerton capture a really representative snapshot of Australian opinions. Share it with your husband, son or brother. Share it with someone living in a rural community. Share it with people who didnt go to university. The survey takes 10 minutes and youll go into the draw to win a $100 Coles Myer voucher. https://tinyurl.com/yxlx9cfs
03.01.2022 This research presented by an esteemed OT shows us that in the inpatient rehab setting stroke survivors are really not getting enough practice in order to optimise their arm function. This reinforces our fondness for group program offerings, prompts us to consider restructuring therapy sessions and highlights the need for more education and tools to support independent practice.
