In 2005, Google created a tool called nofollow to combat easy to acquire links and comment spam. Using the nofollow tag meant that Google would ignore those links ie no crawling or indexing. Google's latest update treats nofollow tag as "hints". This means that nofollow links won't affect rankings by default. Although in some cases Google MAY us...e them for crawling and indexing.
