25.01.2022 FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION: YEAR 11 SESSIONS - ALL METHODS OF FERTILITY MANAGEMENT Once again this topic is delivered in the mindset of timely and prudent sex education. It is known that 61.5% of sexual activity is conducted with Your current steady girlfriend/boyfriend. Approximately 5% of sexual activity has resulted in pregnancy; 55.7% of sexually active teenagers talked about avoiding pregnancy; 20.2% talk about avoiding an STI; 70.4% talked about using a condom. In terms ...of contraception, the majority of sexually active students are using the condom and the pill, 67.6% using a condom and 49.8% using the pill, indicating some are using a combination. Therefore it is necessary at this stage of the adolescents journey to explore the complexities of this reality and the multiplicity of decisions that one faces in regards to sexual conduct and the reality this proposes around pregnancy and life consequences. 10.01.2022 Meet the NFS Team: Im Mikaela and I teach couples the Sympto-Thermal Method (STM) of Natural Family Planning (NFP), also known as a Fertility Awareness Based Method (FABM). My husband and I learned to chart around the time we became engaged and we have been charting ever since so thats 14 years now! I still remember being so excited that I would finally know when I would get my period, as I had always had irregular cycles and never knew when my next one would come. So a ...bit about me I live in Cairns but am originally from New Zealand, and spent time living in the pacific islands as a child. I enjoy spending time with my husband under our tree in our big backyard, usually with our six children making lots of noise around us. People often assume that NFP isnt effective (and we must be proof) because we, like some other families that use NFP, have what is now days considered a big family. However, I can assure you that we planned and were open to all of our children; hence they are nicely spaced about two years apart: currently 5 months, then 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 years. As well as being a mum of six children and all that entails, I work one day a week teaching NFP. I like to do a bit of card making (when I have time) and reading biographies of interesting people, (such as Dr Catherine Hamlin AC, who just passed away last month after 61 years in Ethiopia pioneering work to treat obstetric fistula). I also really enjoy being involved in our church, catching up with friends, talking with my family and eating Whittakers chocolate from New Zealand! (If you havent tried it you really should its the best!) One of the things I enjoy about teaching couples STM is that they are empowered to know their bodies and understand what it is telling them about their cycles. Just a simple bit of knowledge can make all the difference when it comes to knowing whether they are currently fertile or infertile and then they can make decisions accordingly depending on if they want to achieve or avoid pregnancy. As an example of this, I clearly remember one couple who had a child already but had been struggling to achieve pregnancy a second time. They had begun seeing an IVF specialist but the costs were prohibitive for them. They heard about NFP and came for an appointment. Even in the Initial Instruction their eyes were opened to really understand when they were fertile and when they werent. After charting for a few months we worked through a couple of minor issues and then it became clear what the major issue was for them Timing! He was a FIFO worker and it seemed that every time she was fertile he was away! He went to his boss and requested a change to his schedule and when I contacted them a couple of months later she delightedly told me they had just confirmed they were 5 weeks pregnant! A longed for pregnancy achieved, just from learning to identify the fertile window accurately and changing a roster so he was home when she was fertile!

08.01.2022 Since its inception in 1996, Natural Fertility Services (NFS) has developed a program of instruction for sexuality education. The Program extends from year 1 through to Year 12. In Primary school the Title of the program is the Wonders of Living (Rate, A., Kearney, J., MacMahon, E., 2007), taking its name from the video resource used in this aspect of the program. In Year 5 and 6 we also conduct a Puberty preparation program, gender specific. In High school years 7 - 9 th...e program is called Sexual and Reproductive Health, and is also gender specific. In year 10 one session is run on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). Year 11 is a session on All Methods of Family Planning and year 12 is a session entitled Life Choices. The NFS program needs to be complimentary to the work of the school and is dependant also on appropriate support and follow-up services. As the foundation of this program, human sexuality is a wholistic reality and cannot be linearised into progressive stages, nor, compartmentalised into certain segments. Each stage of the program is not just a progression towards the final outcome but presents the total vision as it can be understood at the students present level of understanding. Facts are presented honestly and openly in a manner that can be understood and accepted without enlightening the student beyond the needs of their intellectual and physical maturation. It needs to be said that Health Outcomes are not the primary focus of this program.
