25.01.2022 ADRENALS A simple way to support your adrenals is by starting your day off with the sun on your skin, feet on the earth & greens into your body. I like to think of greens as a means to get sunshine into the body! Too often we wake up & start our day off in a rush. We wake up bleary eyed, and grab a coffee to wake up. Or we grab our phones for a dopamine hit. While this does wake us up, it does so by giving us a surge of stress hormones! This is not a good way to start... your day, and will usually cause you to have that mid-morning sugar craving (because stress = body using sugar for fuel!). To support healthy adrenals we need to both let our body wake up naturally without caffeine, and go to sleep naturally without alcohol. This will support our body’s natural circadian rhythm, which has a flow on of so many health benefits!! 23.01.2022 Anxiety and sleep problems are amongst the most common issues folks are struggling with these days. It’s no wonder - with all the stress in the world, and at ho...me, a lot of us are jacked up our cortisol, adrenaline, and we're feeling it. The conventional medical answer? Benzos and sleeping pills. The problem is, that while in severe cases they may be necessary, the side-effects are potentially serious. Benzos are dangerously addictive, affect short-term memory and focus, long-term cognitive function even years after discontinuing their use, and overdose can lead to death. One popular sleep medication was responsible for over 600 car accidents, some of them serious, in women who had taken their medication as prescribed the night before. But because of women's slower metabolism than men, the dose was too high - women were essentially driving drunk. Passion flower is a folk remedy still popular among herbalists for general sleep disturbances, perimenopausal sleep disturbances, depression, and anxiety, and it’s got solid science to back it up. The name passion flower comes from the passion of Christ. I like to think of it as passion flower because who feels much passion for anything when you’re exhausted from no sleep, or anxious. Historically it has also been used for chronic pain, hot flashes, and tension to name a few. I find it helpful with magnesium and B6 for PMS symptoms. In Europe physicians prescribe it for tenseness, restlessness, irritability, and difficulty falling asleep. A small number of clinical studies also confirm its use for improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety. It’s totally safe while you’re breastfeeding. There’s too little data to recommend it for regular use in pregnancy, so I generally lean into other approaches for pregnant mamas, which I teach about in my Pregnancy Pathway which you can access now thru mid-February for free on Facebook at #ideservebirthsupport. 14.01.2022 TOP 5 TIPS TO ALKALISE Do you eat a lot of meat, processed foods, fried food, dairy, nightshades, or drink a lot of coffee, soda & alcohol? Chances are your body could be too acidic...but what does that mean and why is it not a good thing? Without a full lesson in blood chemistry, just know that an acidic body provides a perfect breeding ground for bacteria & disease...and can worsen conditions such as arthritis or chronic pain.... So to help you out post Chrissy, here are my top tips to alkalise... 1- Eat your veggies, particularly dark green leafy’s!!! It’s the one thing all nutrition experts do all agree on You need at least 5-8 cups per day people!! 2- Reduce your intake of dairy, canned foods, processed foods & stimulants such as coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, alcohol etc (in moderation!) 3- Reduce your intake of refined sugar, and choose low sugar fruits (berries, apples, lemons, limes, grapefruit, avocado) 4- Drink more water! 10.01.2022 KALE TAHINI SALAD BOWL This is one of the many delicious recipes you have access to during the 30-days To Healthy Living program. This recipe is on our family regulars list now, it’s so yummy! You could have it on its own as a meal or served as a side salad with bbq meat. It keeps quite well for the next day too Ingredients... 2x roasted sweet potato chopped 4 cups chopped kale leaves 1 1/2 cups cooked quinoa 1 can chickpeas drained Sesame seeds Salt & Pepper Olive oil 1- Roast pumpkin & put quinoa on to cook (like rice) 2- Make tahini dressing (x2 cloves garlic, 3/4 cup tahini, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 2 tsp chopped parsley, salt & extra water to desired consistency) 3- Make lemon dressing (1/4 cup lemon juice, 2/3 cup olive oil, s&p) 4- Toss the chickpeas with about 2tbsp of lemon dressing in a bowl & set aside 5- Massage the remaining dressing into the kale in a large bowl, then add the cooked quinoa, sweet potato, chickpeas & drizzle with the tahini dressing. 10.01.2022 RELAX My man & I were lucky enough to have a day-date yesterday! I’m not sure we’ve really done that since before kids...the few dates we’ve had are usually evenings We were pretty excited so got organised and headed off for a beach adventure...somewhere that would normally be too hard with kids, armed with only 1-bag & clothes without pockets But once we got there & found a spot to chill, I noticed just how hard it was for me to fully relax. I realised just how ON I am... all the time with the kids, never a moment to just watch the clouds & the waves rolling in, not having to be dealing with snacks & sandcastles, nappies & squabbles. I know this may sound strange, but it was hard! It took me a while to fully relax into the moment and not have this over-riding feeling like I should be doing something! It was a good lesson for me, that for the health of my nervous system, I NEED to make time in my life to relax...not always DOING, but practicing BEING. Even when I carve out space to myself I will exercise, read or podcast...never just doing nothing. If you are a mama, do you find it hard to completely relax and switch off?? 04.01.2022 I’m sick of waking up feeling stiff, achy and in pain Sound familiar?? If you are tired of waking up feeling like an 80yr old, then memorise this mantra...... MOTION IS LOTION. You must MOVE your body every day. It doesn’t have to look fancy or even take you out of your day (although a couple of organised fitness sessions a week is recommended if you are sedentary!) How can you walk more? Park your car further away from work, take the kids for a walk/scooter/skate, drink more water so you need to get up to pee more during the day at work! How can you squat more? Squat to pick things off the floor, squat down to your babies, squat down to the bottom cupboard, squat to garden... How can you climb & hang more? Climb up on the bench to water pot plants up high. Hang & climb on the playground equipment when you’re there with your kids. Hang from a pole or the verandah railing to stretch your spine.... How can you dance more? If you work from home crank the tunes and have a couple of dance sessions to break up your day, dance with the kids! 03.01.2022 Kale Salad Bowl We love this recipe in our house! The kids aren’t that keen on the tahini dressing so I keep some roasted sweet potato, chopped kale & quinoa ...aside and mix with yoghurt + lemon dressing for them. This recipe is rich in plant protein so doesn’t need meat But is nice served with lamb chops for the meat lovers! INSTRUCTIONS 1- Roast x2 sweet potatoes (chopped) with a coat of olive oil 2- Cook 1/2 cup dry quinoa (like rice, 1:2 water ratio) 3- Make lemon dressing by whisking the following ingredients together: 1/4 cup lemon juice 2/3 cup olive oil Salt & pepper 4- Toss 1 can chickpeas with 2 tbsp of the lemon dressing...set aside. 5- Make tahini dressing in blender or pestle & mortar. Add more water if it’s too thick: 2 cloves garlic crushed 1tsp salt 3/4 cup tahini 2 tbsp lemon juice 2-3 tbsp warm water 2tsp chopped parsley 6- In a large bowl toss & massage about 4-cups of chopped kale with the rest of the lemon dressing (will make the kale a bit softer). 7- Top with roasted potatoes, quinoa & chickpeas. Drizzle with tahini dressing (use as much or as little as you like!), mix, garnish with sesame seeds & enjoy! Please share around!!
