19.01.2022 INTRODUCING | Dr Matthew Carson working Tuesdays and Thursdays at Ngak Min Health. "I was born and raised a Kiwi living in New Zealand. I travelled 'across the ditch' in 2008 to study medicine in Brisbane and after travelling around as a junior Dr for a few years I then relocated to Cairns in 2018 to complete my GP training. While in Cairns I have enjoyed working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Health both locally as well as some travel up to communities in Cape York and the Torres Strait. Outside of work I enjoy spearfishing in the Great Barrier Reef, swimming in freshwater creeks and generally exploring the great outdoors that FNQ has to offer."

07.01.2022 Star struck Dr Anj met Jonathan Thurston! Dr Anj (Dr Anjayani Sam) believes in empowering future generations through the prioritisation of health and education in children. What better way to support her message then with the man himself, JT, an Indigenous role model who shares the vision of empowerment. Last month Ngak Min Health joined Djarragun College to launch the JTConnect, a new program to encourage the youth of Cairns to pursue the employment journey of their cho...ice. We truly believe that the more empowered young people feel to pursue their own choices for their life, the better. This is encouraged by instilling a strong sense of self belief, confidence and courage that they can pursue a career or a job of their choice, said Thurston.

04.01.2022 A big warm welcome to our new General Manager of Ngak Min Health, Charmaine Nicholls. "My family has been fortunate to have our land handed back, which is Jaycreek, West of Mparntwe. Jaycreek has many special places, but the more well-known ones are Stanley Chasm, Simpson Gap, Honeymoon Gap and the Twin Ghost Gums.... My family Dreaming is that of the Yeperenye (caterpillar), but in and around Mparntwe places such as Anthwerrke (Emily Gap), Akeyulerre (Billy Goat Hill), Ntaripe (Heavitree Gap), Atnelkentyarliweke (Anzac Hill) and Alhekulyele (Mt Gillen) have significant importance. My family has other stories, and it is through these stories that the landscape of Mparntwe was shaped. It was on Atnelkentyarliweke (Anzac Hill) as the sun was setting on Mparntwe, that Mr Harold Thomas (my grandfather’s family) was watching the sun go down over the West McDonald Ranges, and at that moment, he saw what we now see as the Aboriginal Flag! In addition to my strong connection to my culture, I have a great understanding and passion for comprehensive and holistic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care. I have dedicated both my personal and professional life to this, including advocating for improvements to the Social Determinants of Health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. I have worked in this sector for over 25-years now with many deadly and diverse people from all professions. I always say that I was born into Aboriginal health, as many of my family have been instrumental in the early days of fighting to have the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress (CAAC) (est. 1972), Congress Alukura (by our Grandmothers law/lore) (est. 1980s) and the Central Land Council established. My grandmother’s brother was elected as the first deputy (1975) with Mr Charlie Perkins being elected Chair. I am looking forward to working side-by-side with all the staff at Ngak Min Health, our CEO, Cape York Partnership staff and staff from other entities to continue to work towards our agenda!" - Charmaine Penangke Nicholls (nee Kenny-Campbell) Here is a photo of me holding our next strong, healthy, and resilient generation of leaders
