Although not selected by the judges, our entry is now part of the City of Vincent Local History Collection. L to R The Hon. 25.01.2022 This week is National Child Protection Week. As an organisation, Ngala is committed to creating and maintaining a child safe organisation, that promotes and protects the safety and well-being of children and young people. We understand that child abuse and neglect is one of Australia’s most significant social problems, with over 32,000 Australian children proven to have been abused throughout 2017-18. The term ‘child abuse’ includes physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual... abuse, neglect and exposing a child to family violence. As a result of abuse and neglect, past victims are grossly over-represented in the populations of our prisons, as perpetrators of crime and violence, and amongst the economically and socially disadvantaged members of our society. To find out more about National Child Protection Week, including the incredible range of free educational events and webinars that are available visit: https://www.napcan.org.au/official-program-webinars-events/ #playyourpart #ncpw

20.01.2022 On the weekend, Ngala celebrated 130 years as a charitable community service organisation with a very special fundraising evening hosted by the Friends of Ngala. Here's a personal message the Hon. Kim Beazley Governor of Western Australia has shared with all in congratulations of our milestone year. Celebrating 130 Years of Ngala

20.01.2022 Last weekend's Father's Day celebrations were a timely reminder of the value and importance of fathers and father figures. Unfortunately, Australian society, and our health system, has not kept pace with the changing needs, expectations, roles and diversity of modern-day families, leaving many non-birthing partners without the supports they need. Non-birthing parents, most commonly men, are not systematically engaged or supported from pre-conception to parenthood. They are of...ten treated as secondary to fertility, birthing and parenting processes; welcome, but not active-partners. To look closely at this problem, Ngala was invited to be part of the Plus Paternal Round Table where, together with senior health professionals and policy makers from across Australia, we considered the evidence gathered and identified the best opportunities for change. Attached below is a link to the Case for Change, which outlines how social and gendered norms affect fathers and why the health system needs to change. Ngala is proud to have been involved in this research and endorses this Case for Change. https://www.ngala.com.au/healthy-male-plus-paternal-case-f/

19.01.2022 Here at Ngala, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to be their best, so we strongly endorse the work of the Valuing Children Initiative, which strives to improve the well-being of all children and young people in Australia. As Australians, we may think we value children, but a population that reports high levels of child abuse, poverty, obesity, trauma, suicide, youth unemployment and children that are not developmentally ready to start school is not a popu...lation that values children. It is for these reasons that the Valuing Children Initiative has launched their campaign, Create an Australia where all children can thrive and Ngala is committed to supporting this campaign by building awareness, so that as a community we can build a population that values all children. If you would like more information on the VCI visit: https://valuingchildreninitiative.com.au/ #valuingchildreninitiative

18.01.2022 Ngala's Early Learning and Development Service in Kensington has held its first Community Market and it was a great success! Thank you to Sandra, the Principle of Youth Education from Banksia Hill Detention Centre, who approached us to see if we would be interested in receiving some of the fresh produce grown by the young people in Banksia Hill’s Horticulture Program, to use in our kitchen and share with our community. From this we asked families to bring in any unwanted produce from their gardens and we are receiving a variety of fresh produce on a daily basis. The children are playing a very active part in the market and are finding it lots of fun! 08.01.2022 International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day is held on the 9th of September each year. Research has shown that in Western Australia, the prevalence of FASD is estimated to be 0.3 per 1000 births, but this is acknowledged to be an underestimate. In one area of WA, 19% of 7-8 year old children were found to have FASD. Telethon Kids Institute assessed young people in Banksia Juvenile Detention Centre and found that 36% of them have FASD and 89% have at le...ast one severe neurodevelopmental impairment. It is known that the neurodevelopmental impairments that result from brain damage caused by alcohol exposure before birth are permanent and negatively impact on development. FASD affects the ability to think, learn, focus attention and control behaviour and emotions. Those with FASD may also be impulsive and often have low self-esteem and mental health problems, which may lead to problems at school, socially unacceptable behaviour, alcohol and other drug use and early interactions with the justice system. Ngala's Growing Strong Brains project in Carnarvon has highlighted the need for further education and practical ways to prevent FASD, as well as to increase understanding of the impact on children’s development, attendance at and engagement in schools. Today, the team in Carnarvon are hosting a range of activities and a community barbecue to raise awareness of the impact of FASD and to share the message that it is entirely preventable. Learn more about Ngala's Growing Strong Brains program here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gyQfFYhm2s&t=381s

08.01.2022 2020 brings the 15th annual PANDA Week. Since 2005 PANDA has been leading the perinatal mental health sector in promoting the Week to raise awareness about perinatal anxiety and depression, including signs to look for and where to go to seek support. This year, more than ever, it’s vital that expecting and new parents who are struggling know they’re not alone and can reach out for help. And just as importantly, they can know that when they do reach out, they will be supported by those they confide in, whether it's family members, health professionals, PANDA or other perinatal mental health specialists. For support for perinatal anxiety and depression visit: https://www.panda.org.au/ or call the PANDA Helpline 1300 726 306.

08.01.2022 Today, Ngala is proud to celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, as it's celebrated across Australia with the theme - 'we are the Elders of tomorrow, hear our voice'. Recently, in collaboration with Wadjuk Elder Sandra Harben, Ngala’s Ngalang Moort Ngalang Kurlangah (MNMK) Team created the song ‘Djerpin Marr’ (Happy Hands). 07.01.2022 As Patron of Ngala, Raising happiness the Governor had much pleasure in attending the Friends of Ngala Fundraising Luncheon today, as well as officially launchi...ng Ngala's latest book. All funds raised from today's event go directly to support the organisation's critical work across WA in helping parents, families and communities enhance the well-being and development of children and young people. As WA's oldest not-for-profit community service Ngala's evolution from it’s 1890 beginning as a refuge for unmarried pregnant girls, to a premier community support service today has been captured in a new book titled - 'Raising Ngala: A story of Strength and Courage' In officially launching the book the Governor spoke of its candid and fascinating insight into Ngala’s history and the organisation's endurance and growth over the past 130 years. It is only by looking back that the enormity of the journey of Ngala and its importance to the WA community can be truly understood, said the Governor. I would like to take this opportunity to thank past and present leaders, staff, trainees, volunteers and families for their strength and courage over the years. It has no doubt led to the survival of Ngala and generations of children living their best lives. Photography - Matt Jelonek

06.01.2022 Did you know that the number of family and domestic violence-related victims increased in Western Australia by 10% between 2018 and 2019? This translates to 19,437 people experiencing family and domestic violence in just one year! It’s frightening statistics like this that drive Ngala to throw our support behind the WA-led campaign for change - 16 Days in WA to Stop Violence Against Women. Commencing today on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, ...16 Days in WA works to promote equality and respectful relationships, violence-free spaces and safer communities, all key elements in stopping violence against women. The theme for the 2020 campaign is ‘Respect starts with you’. There is no quick fix to WA’s high rates of family and domestic violence, but we hope that education and shining a light on violence against women, will develop generational change, which is crucial if we are to achieve long-term success and stop gender-based violence in our communities for good. One in five (or 25% of) Western Australian women reported experiencing partner violence since the age of 15 63% of assaults in WA were family and domestic-violence related in 2019 11,975 family violence restraining orders were lodged in Western Australia in 2018-19, equalling 75% of the total restraining orders filed. As many as 56% of youth homelessness cases in Western Australia are linked to family and domestic violence. Family and domestic violence is a leading cause of women’s homelessness. Domestic violence accounted for 55.8% of the accommodation support from specialist homelessness agencies in WA in 2017-18, up from 45.1% in 2012-13.10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women account for 67% of hospitalisations due to family and domestic violence in WA

03.01.2022 At Ngala, we know that many children in WA start primary school on the back foot, with some children being up to 24 months behind other kids in their social and academic development. Ngala is actively working to bridge these gaps through Child and Parent Centres, in areas where kids are at most risk of this developmental deficit. On Monday we were thrilled to read this article in The West Australian, which backs up everything we do at our CPCs. The article details the findings that Telethon Kid's Institute's CoLab has put forward for a vision for the best conditions to see WA kids thrive, with community hubs - or what we call Child and Parent Centres - amongst the recommendations.
