25.01.2022 It's like leg day at the gym! There's a few stairs at Ngilgi Cave, and recent guest @andria_w_ has photographic evidence! An underground adventure through a million year old cave is an epic way to stretch the legs after a big brekkie or lunch. And if you're bringing your family, you're in luck - we specialise in wearing kids out. So if you've dosed them up on doughnuts at the local bakery, wear them out on a cave tour! We're still taking relatively small groups on each tour, to adhere to social distancing rules, so be sure to book ahead to guarantee your preferred time. Especially during weekends and holidays! Hot tip: the first and last tour of the day is always the quietest.

23.01.2022 It's a winter wonderland here, folks While IG/tremy001 was admiring crystal stalactites below ground, it was raining cats and dogs upstairs! Such is the beauty of our show caves, they're just perfect and peaceful on a wintry day.

22.01.2022 Whatta find! Kelly Lamp found this cave ticket hidden in a door frame while renovating her nearby cottage. It must be at least 54 years old, because we moved from shillings to decimal currency in 1966! Great find Kelly, thanks so much for sharing it with us! Just the time to go rock hopping on the beach, mountain biking through the Meelup trails, zip lining at Forest Adventures South West or (best of all!) venturing deep underground in a crystal cave Explore at your own pace on a Ngilgi Cave semi-guided tour. Your guide welcomes you, shares some information then lets you go and explore. At the deepest, furthest point of the cave, you'll see another guide who can point out some of the coolest stalactites and a...nswer your questions. Right now, due a certain virus that won’t be named, we can only take about half as many people on each tour compared to 'normal'. 21.01.2022 Today is International Day of Caves and the Subterranean World - a day to increase awareness about the significance of caves to our environment, culture, history and economy. And we're also celebrating because we can now welcome 15 guests on each cave tour! We'd love you to join us at Ngilgi Cave or any of the beautiful show caves in the region - Mammoth and Lake Cave within Boranup Forest and Jewel Cave near Augusta. All are unique and simply beautiful! 20.01.2022 It's International Lighthouse Day this Saturday, and our buddies at Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse would love you to join in the celebrations. The Dunsborough Rural Fire Brigade will be set up on the lighthouse grounds with a fire truck for the kids to climb in and a sausage sizzle from 9am to 1pm ish on Saturday 22 August. Funds from the Heritage Passes (entry to the grounds) will be donated to the fire brigade to help them continue their excellent work. There'll be amateur radio broadcasting all weekend, and guided tours where you can go inside the working lighthouse too.

20.01.2022 The number of times we've called out "go back, you need to check out the fairy cave!" It's in the main chamber, deep within Ngilgi, just a little past the guide station. It's at elbow height so it's pretty easy to walk straight past it, especially if you're tall. So we recommend going slowly, looking all around you at each step, as the cave keeps revealing more the harder you look. ... This little cavern must have once been filled with saturated solution, so when tiny straws touched the water, clusters of dogtooth crystal formed. The solution has long since gone, but the delicate crystals remain, with a tiny window into the scene. Thanks IG/jessiemellows_ for visiting and sharing this wonderful memory!

17.01.2022 Imagine arriving here in 1899, at Western Australia's trendiest honeymoon destination, Yallingup's newly opened cave. There was no hopping into the 4WD for an easy 3 hour ride along the Forest Highway. Instead, you caught a train from Perth to Busselton then made your way on horseback along dusty trails to the cave. It was a full day's journey with no hot bath or luxury accommodation to greet you - Caves House was still a few years away from being built. Instead, you pitched ...a tent with your new husband. The next day you wore your finest hooped skirts and boned bodice making it slightly challenging to breathe. Hubby wore a three piece suit and shiny leather shoes. Excitedly, you joined a guide and other guests, all carrying candles or kerosene lamps as you descended into the cave. You tried not to set yourselves on fire as you spent an entire day climbing over boulders, shimmying through narrow spots and walking on uneven rocky ground. There was no electricity, no boardwalks, no beautifully lit caverns or signage. 121 years later and we have the luxury of comfortable boardwalks and professional guides. We even have gorgeous accommodation, great restaurants and a big carpark for your 4WD. So lucky! Stage 4 restrictions naturally means we're still limiting guest numbers in the cave, and tours have been fully booked as a result. 17.01.2022 All this cave bacon is makin' me hungry! It's easy to see why shawl formations also get named after our favourite breakfast treat. Water doesn't always form drops - sometimes it trickles down the cave ceiling, depositing a narrow strip of calcite, that eventually results in a thin sheet or shawl... AKA cave bacon. Like stalactites and other formations, shawls take thousands of years to form, during which time the levels of tannins or minerals in the solution change, result...ing in distinct stripes of colour. Look out for this stunning example just after the guide station in the mid-way part of your cave journey. And sorry, you can't eat this bacon! Thanks so much to @curtrm for sharing your epic photo!

15.01.2022 Four amazing caves in the Margaret River region, which one to visit? Well, they're all fantastic and worth exploring. For sure. And they're all unique, so what sets Ngilgi Cave apart? Firstly, it's in Yallingup, a good 40 minutes north of Mammoth and Lake Caves, and an hour north of Jewel Cave. For lots of our visitors, it's convenient if they're staying in Busselton, Yallingup or Dunsborough.... Secondly, it's got an adventurous feel to it. Take these stairs for example, you really need to bend to the right to avoid bumping your noggin, and being old/pre-OHS, the stairs aren't always even in height and size. Everyone* (*under the age of 12) LOVES our tunnel of doom, crawling through a real crystal tunnel, not knowing where you might emerge. Don't worry though, the tunnel is optional and it's a short loop you can easily bypass and keep enjoying the rest of the cave. Thirdly, it's a semi-guided format. Tours start every half hour, and the guide is with you for fifteen minutes before letting you explore the cave at your own pace. Finally, Ngilgi has an amazing amphitheatre near the entrance, with its ceiling covered in thousands of stalactites. It has near perfect acoustics, and Dame Nellie Melba once performed there. True fact. So we totally understand if it's another cave you choose, but if you pick Ngilgi, we really look forward to welcoming you. This is the lovely thing about Ngilgi - and Mammoth Cave - once you're inside, you can quietly explore at your own pace, taking the time to reflect on the miraculous calcite crystals that have formed over a staggering 500,000 years! Ngilgi Cave tours are semi-guided, and begin every 30 minutes. A guide shares some facts about the cave and leads you into the cave, before allowing you to wander and check it out in your own time. A...t the furthest point, you'll meet another guide who can answer questions and point out some cool crystals. An important piece of advice; book ahead for your tour. The combination of school holidays and limited group numbers due to social distancing means that tours are filling up a day or two ahead. Each time you visit one of the local caves or lighthouses, or Forest Adventures South West, you're helping us keep these incredible sites going, and we really appreciate it. When we first found and shared this photo (while renovating the ticketing area) we instantly had a message from the celebrant Joy Smith's family - it turns out she conducted a number of ceremonies deep in Yallingup Cave, as it was called then. 06.01.2022 Looking at this glorious Yallingup coastline, you'd never guess what lies beneath the ridge... over 100 limestone caves between Cape Naturaliste in the north, and Cape Leeuwin in the south. These beautiful caves were hollowed out of porous limestone a million years ago, then massive rainfalls helped form incredible calcite crystals. Four show caves are open for you to explore - the other 100 or so are protected, to preserve their delicate and sensitive decorations. If you've... already visited Ngilgi Cave, why not try one of the other caves? Mammoth is brilliant for young children and its first chamber is wheelchair accessible. It's also a critical megafauna site. Lake Cave is a photographer's dream; an amazing doline entrance and a subterranean lake that reflects the crystal decorations. Jewel Cave is a true wonderland, a huge and highly decorated cave with fossilised animal remains. These underground tours involve climbing and crawling through the deepest caverns, with just your head torch illuminating the way. Firstly, we recommend booking ahead, especially if you're visiting on a weekend. When you arrive, you congregate in a meeting spot, taking in mosaic murals and the Wadandi Dreamtime story. A tour guide will share some stories and facts about the cave, leading you inside and pointing the way. Once you've got your bearings, you're free to explore the cave at your own... pace, taking it all in. Allow about an hour, and remember, the more you look, the more you see! 02.01.2022 We're really missing our International and Interstate visitors - @walkingfleur was fortunate to visit earlier this year and took happy memories home to the UK. On the flip side, we're so grateful to have plenty of West Australian visitors right now; those who might have taken an overseas holiday are now rediscovering the south west and exploring our own beautiful state. This sure is the year to #WanderOutYonder

01.01.2022 It's the beloved crawl tunnel, a short crawl space just near our cave entrance. Kids love it and usually drag mum and dad in (ouch, my knees!) then proceed to crawl it again and again as their parents wait patiently. This is part of what makes Ngilgi such a great cave for kids - it's an adventurous cave and you can enjoy it at your own pace. So go on kids, see if you can beat the crawl tunnel record! (It's up in the 60s, ask your guide!)
