16.01.2022 More than 1,000 invasive plants being propagated for sale by backyard growers have been destroyed. Together with Sunshine Coast Council, our officers seized th...e illegal cacti plants that had the potential to become serious pests! The plants seized included drooping tree pear (Opuntia monacantha), Eve's pin cactus (Austrocylindropuntia subulate), blind cactus (Opuntia rufida), bunny ears cactus (Opuntia microdasys), velvety tree pear (Opuntia tomentose) and mother of millions (Bryophyllum delagoense). They have the potential to spread in the same way as the prickly pear cactus, which decimated 60 million acres of land and sent many landholders broke. They could endanger the local environment, stock and native wildlife If you're selling or planning to sell plants, make sure they are not prohibited or restricted under the Biosecurity Act 2014. A list of prohibited plants can be found at https://bit.ly/2T6KCoW, and restricted plants at https://bit.ly/2R5DfLJ. If you know of someone keeping or selling illegal plants, give us a call on 13 25 23.

05.01.2022 Tasmania is Queensland fruit fly free please help us keep it that way! Summer is the peak time for fruit fly activity on mainland Australia and a time of incr...eased risk for Tasmania. While Biosecurity Tasmania has strict controls in place aimed at preventing fruit fly from getting into Tasmania, we ask everybody to remain vigilant for any signs of fruit fly. Fruit fly larvae look similar to blowfly maggots and could be found in fruit that you bought from the supermarket or from fruit in your backyard. If you see something suspect and are not sure, please report it to Biosecurity Tasmania on 03 6165 3777. Please do not dispose of any fruit that has larvae you think might be fruit fly. Instead place the fruit in a plastic bag or plastic container and put it in your fridge until a Biosecurity Tasmania officer can collect it. For more information on Queensland fruit fly visit the Biosecurity Tasmania website at: www.dpipwe.tas.gov.au/fruitfly
