24.01.2022 **Still open for business** Hey everyone! Us dental technicians are still able to operate at this stage here in SA so Im still here to come and treat your horses. Just a few notes to keep in mind. I have upped the disinfecting of all my equipment and would appreciate clients to do the same also. I have my own head collars and leads to use if you prefer No more bringing horses to one property to get group discounts. I will come to you! We cant congregate in large grou...ps. I will still offer my discount rates for neighbours ect or small travel distances If you feel unwell or have had contact with a Covid-19 patient PLEASE CANCEL! There will be no cancellation fees at this time we can always rebook. As always I do not require you as an owner to hold or restrain the horse or pony for me so we can easily keep our social distance even during an appontiment. Hopefully I can continue to care for the dental welfare of your horses and ponies during this difficult time. I will continue to update you all and obviously if we go into a form of lockdown all clients with a booked appointment will be notified Stay Safe everyone! Nic x

15.01.2022 Canine or Wolf tooth- a common mix up! Canine teeth (which in the wild would be used by stallions for fighting) are sometimes referred to as Bridle Teeth so people assume these are the ones that sometimes need removing, Wrong! Wolf teeth are the ones that may need removal as they are often shallow rooted and can become mobile (loose) with constant pressure from the bit over time which can lead to behavioural issues such as flicking of the head or irregular contact. Horses... can have none or up to four wolf teeth positioned in front of the first premolars. Do they always need removal? No, sometimes they are positioned as such that they will cause no issues to a ridden horse and removal is decided on a case by case basis. Interesting fact; Canine teeth erupt at around 5 years of age and about 30% of mares will also have canine teeth. They are often much smaller than the ones we see in male horses!

07.01.2022 Terminology Tuesday / Stereotypy Stereotypy is a repeated, relatively invariant sequence of movements that has no function obvious to the observer. Stereotypi...es are abnormal behaviours and are generally considered a sign of impaired welfare. Stereotypic behaviour arises from frequent or chronic stress and may help the animal to cope with adverse conditions. The behaviours may persist, even if the triggering factors are eliminated. A number of stereotypic behaviours, such as box-wandering, pacing and crib-biting, are seen in horses and are erroneously referred to as stable vices. In this video, Dr Andrew McLean talks about a form of stereotypy, windsucking (or crib biting). He discusses whether this is a bad thing and how this stereotypical behaviour can also indicate something positive about a horse. Wed love for you to tag someone who would find this video interesting!

05.01.2022 Sometimes you just see cases that touch your heart I treated this lovely girl when she first arrived at SA Dog Rescue facilities, she was heavily pregnant but very underweight. On inspection of her mouth it was found that she had not been done in many many years. She had previously lost a lower molar and the opposing upper molar had continued to erupt down into the gap, making it almost impossible for her to eat, let alone chew hay or grass into a digestible consistency. S...he also appeared older than previously thought and after some digging it was found that she is 34 years old. Just the other day she gave birth to a handsome little boy. Im amazed that they both came through the birth especially with mums condition and age and obviously it will be a long road until they are out of the woods but I have my fingers crossed for them. Christmas is fast approaching and it is a busy time for all rescue shelters and I ask if you can donate please do, it doesnt matter how little, imagine if we all put just $1 forward, it adds up so quickly. Ill add a link at the end to donate directly to SA Dog Rescue. I hope everyone is having a great week! http://www.sadogrescue.com/Donations.html
