19.01.2022 Today we commemorate Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War! Victory in the Pacific Day, or VP Day, commemorates the end of the Second Worl...d War on August 14, 1945, when Japan accepted the terms of the unconditional surrender set by the Allied Nations. Also known as VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, it is commemorated on August 15, the day that Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the end of the war in a radio broadcast, before the signing of the official surrender took place on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan, on September 2, 1945. VP Day meant an end to Australias war against Japan in the Pacific; a war that had begun half a world away in Europe that was brought close to home after Japans unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941, We remember the sacrifices and service of our Diggers who fought for our freedom in the Pacific. #wewillrememberthem. 10.01.2022 Kaniva is Art Kaniva is Art is a project brought to you by LINK Neighbourhood House and the Nhill Free Press and Kaniva Times to bring art to the community in a... time where art is not easily accessed and in a time where Kaniva artists have limited capacity to exhibit their art due to Covid-19. The project aims to do this by running a weekly article in the Nhill Free Press and Kaniva Times featuring one artist and posting a weekly Facebook post on the LINK page featuring that same artist. LINK have spoken to a few Kaniva artists to get the ball rolling, but, are also interested to hear from anyone that would like to be involved in this on-going article. The first artist to be featured is Pam Vennell who has an exhibition currently at Heartfelt Caf. Unfortunately Heartfelt is only open for limited times for take-away at present. This exhibition can be seen on Heartfelts Facebook page. Theres a warmth to Pam Vennells paintings, giving still life, country cottages and landscapes a close attention to detail. Her oils and watercolours depict a preference for old world charm. Architectural feature of historial buildings are some of the hightlights of her work. Pam has lived in the Kaniva district all her life, and although her love of art goes back to student days it was put on hold when young children and a busy farm life took priority. She now siezes the opportunity to paint regularly in her retirement. Her favourite places to paint are those with striking scenery such as the Little Deser, Grampians, Adelaide Hills and Flinders Ranges where she can paint the real thing out of doors. Although some work is completed in the studio, she perefers to paint on location to capture the erfects of light and atmosphere. Pam began painting in 1983 and is a member of a South Australian Art Group. Her first lessons were with Willalooka artist Lorraine Talbot and Lena Austin from Kaniva. Since then she has attended a variety of art schools including tuition from a numer of well-known Australian artists. Over the years she has mastered a variety of media including oils, pastes and watercolour. She has held a number of successful exgibitions throughouyt Western Victoria and South Australia. Her paintings have been sold to buyers across Australia and overseas. Pam has taken classes over recent years and helped experienced, new and young students alike. The various judged and peoples choice awards that she has won over the years is a testimony to the quality of her work. She is a member of the Water Colour Society of Victoria. Below are four of Pams favourite paintings that she has painted. Pam prefers to paint on location, capturing the effect of light and atmosphere, completing some of her works in her studio. The care and attention is apparent in her art. Pam is a member of the Water Colour Society of Victoria. Below are four of Pams favourite paintings that she has painted. See more
