22.01.2022 If you have a photo of a wombat, then it is a very special photo... because it is of a wombat. Do you want to share it with the ABC MY PHOTO "Your best Wombat Wednesday photos of 2020"? https://www.abc.net.au//202/wombat-wednesday-2020/12964388
21.01.2022 More interesting information about Wombats! :) "The rump of the wombat is hard as rock, used for defence, burrowing, bonding, mating and possibly violently crushing the skulls of its enemies against the roof of its burrow." https://www.theguardian.com//wombats-deadly-bums-how-they-
20.01.2022 Not what we see at Moorunde Wildlife Reserve at Blanchetown! But that's what wombats do when they want to get somewhere!
20.01.2022 How amazing is this little fella! What a relief to know that they are not completely gone from Kangaroo Island. We recently had pigmy possum boxes installed at Moorunde, here’s hoping we are able to find some on our reserve soon too!

19.01.2022 Shining a light on wombats!
17.01.2022 Photos from Ranger Duty. The Wombats SA Member was lucky and vigilant enough to see 12 wombats on Moorunde Wildlife Reserve, then a similar number from Moorundie Road as he drove home. So Lucky! :) A sunny afternoon helps draw them out. The photos are almost all cropped as the more relaxed ones are generally well away from the vehicle. Closer ones scuttle down their Burrows! Last Photo is a recent surprise find. ;)
16.01.2022 More great vision taken in October from the the one burrow in southern Tasmania. :) https://fb.watch/1BIvYq7Y3q/
16.01.2022 Thursday 22nd October is WORLD WOMBAT DAY! It’s a day when we celebrate the existence and contribution of three species of wombat, found only in Australia. The Northern Hairy-nosed wombat is critically endangered with only around 160 animals known. So far, the other two species, the Southern Hairy-nosed wombat and the Common wombat are not endangered, although their range is much reduced and they have problems in some areas due to the effect their extensive burrowing can have... on some human activities. Hence being called Bulldozers of the Bush! Wombats SA prefers to celebrate them for what they are and what they do. Wombats and other digging mammals are great soil improvers as they turn over the soil, especially hard soils such as Calcrete and this helps water infiltration. They also help spread important fungi which help plants absorb nutrients. Their activities turn over plant material thus reducing some of the combustible materials in the bush. Wombats are well adapted to Australian conditions and can survive in arid, low rainfall areas by staying in their burrows out of the daytime heat and being active at night. They get moisture from the grasses, herbs, seeds, roots and bark they eat and have a very slow metabolism, that takes about 14 days to complete digestion. Another arid-zone adaptation. Normally they do cube-shaped poo, too, and are the only animals to do that! The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat is South Australia’s Faunal Emblem! It is credited with helping start copper mining in SA when copper deposits were located in wombat diggings on the Yorke Peninsula in the 19th century. This led to a mining boom in what is now known as the Copper Triangle, bringing much needed wealth to the young colony thanks to the wombat diggings and the farmer who saw blue/green coloured rocks in the diggings. Wombats are credited with helping find water by their burrowing activities. Their Burrows are used by a range of other animals, especially to avoid threats and danger of bushfire, etc. Wombats SA / NHSSA is proud to be helping conserve an estimated 2000+ mostly Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats in fully natural situations and we thank our Members and Supporters for their assistance to maintain and improve our reserves and give them the best life we can, as free of threats and competition from introduced animals as possible.
15.01.2022 Hairy-Nosed Wombats are near threatened or threatened so if your kids would like to enter the competition, perhaps they can submit a Hairy-nosed Wombat artwork to this competition? - See details below. https://www.acf.org.au/threatened-species-art-competition
11.01.2022 This might be of interest to Wombats SA?
10.01.2022 Although not about wombats, this is a story close to our hearts as it brings hope for yet another Australian icon species: https://www.theguardian.com//tasmanian-devils-released-int

08.01.2022 Although the earlier fires across many parts of Australia were heart wrenching, this program, "Wild Australia: After the Fires", also tells of the resilience of life here. Part of the program talks about the effect of the fires on wombats in the Southern Highlands (starting at 11:00 minutes). https://iview.abc.net.au/show/wild-australia-after-the-fires
07.01.2022 A different perspective of Cullen Reserve. It's not all weeds! Photos taken by member Barry Powell on Wednesday 28/10/2020

04.01.2022 As we're all in this together, here's a little advice from a wombat on how to do things during a COVID Lock Down.
02.01.2022 On Monday 26/10 to Wednesday 28/10 Wombats SA volunteers an friends did weed/invasive plant control work on our Cullen Wildlife Reserve near Robe SE SA. Our main targets were Scottish Thistle, Polygala and Rhamnus (buckthorn). These plants are fairly widespread in the reserve, coming in from gardens etc and nearby bush areas. Polygala and Rhamnus can grow quite LARGE as we found out! 6 of us removed an estimated 2000+ small to quite large plants - up to 4m high. Larger ones were cut off and painted with poison. Our reward was to see other great native plant species that live spread throughout the Reserve. :) We really appreciated the work the friends and volunteers did to help control these pest plants.
