06.01.2022 This is a really long post. But it is also very important. I promised Territorians I would do whatever it takes to protect them. And I meant it. This morning, ...the Commissioner and I have agreed on a plan to secure the Northern Territory’s borders. From 4.00pm on Tuesday the 24th of March, the Northern Territory will implement strict border controls for all access points by road, rail, air and sea. From 4.00pm on Tuesday, people who arrive in the Northern Territory from interstate will be required to quarantine for 14 days. And this is for everyone. Whether coming from overseas or interstate this applies to you. Whether you’re a local or you’re not this applies to you. It will be enforceable by law. And people who come to the Territory and break this law, will be punished. There will be exemptions to the quarantine period requirement: including health and emergency services, defence and policing, flight crews and freight with strict guidelines in place to monitor and manage this. Arrivals will have to show they meet the essential arrival criteria to be granted an exemption. There will also be exemptions granted on compassionate grounds. And we will be consulting with essential resources industries to make sure their workforce requirements can be met while guaranteeing community safety for this period. Broadly, arrivals will be required, at the point of entry, to declare they will quarantine for 14 days, and declare where they intend to carry out their quarantine period. We will have police checkpoints at our borders to enforce this requirement. We will also have signs on the major roads leading into the Territory so arrivals know exactly what will be required if they enter the Territory. And if you can’t meet those requirements, then turn around and go home. I am announcing this today to give Territorians as much confidence as possible that we are taking every step possible to keep you safe. I want all Territorians to know what we are doing, how we are doing it, and most importantly why. This is an unprecedented action for the Northern Territory. But these are unprecedented times. I’ve seen what’s happening overseas. I’ve seen what’s happening down south. And I’m not going to let that happen here. The Territory comes first. The health of Territorians always comes first. That’s why we are doing what we are doing as a nation and as a Territory. I have said I will do whatever it takes. And as of Tuesday, I’m saying to the rest of the country, if you are not also prepared to do whatever it takes to keep Territorians safe, then sorry, we’re shut. And my message to Territorians who are visiting other parts of the country for work or leisure at the moment Right now the Territory is probably the safest place in Australia and we intend for it to stay that way. Home is the safest place for you. So come home. And I want to be crystal clear this will not impact the delivery of essential goods and services. Food and freight will continue. Our supermarkets and stores will be stocked. To anyone who may be tempted to panic-buy don’t. It is unnecessary and it is unfair to your fellow Territorians. Stockpiling food doesn’t help you, it just hurts vulnerable people. We all need to be the best locals we can be right now. We are all on Team Territory. We are all in this together. So please cut it out. As Chief Minister, I’ve seen Territorians be tested a lot. I’ve seen your resolve, I’ve seen your compassion for each other. I know we’ll get through this because we always do. I’ve said it before, I’ll keep saying it. When times are tough, Territorians stick together. Let’s stick together, let’s see this through. And I promise you, we’ll come out the other side stronger. #territorytogether
