18.01.2022 I am a hospital pharmacist at John Hunter Hospital and I review medications of patients that are admitted to hospital to ensure we don’t miss anything. As you a...ll are aware COVID-19 is in the forefront of our mind every hour and every day. During this time, I have asked our Pharmacy Associations (PSA, SHPA, Guild) and NPS Medicinewise to include in the conversations of the Government and to include in the national health message to ensure patients have an updated medication list if in the event they are admitted to hospital. Locally and nationally, I hope we can encourage our patients, as they pick up their supplies of medications or come in concerned in regards to COVID-19, to remind them to write an up to date medication list. It is important we communicate to them not to be alarmed or scared of going to hospital but to be prepared. I understand and aware you all are under immense pressure with the ongoing stock constraints and mass hording, scared patients and absurd behaviours of particular individuals. Why is it important to write a list? Our doctors, nurses and fellow pharmacists in hospitals may be inundated with patients very soon. We do not want to keep patients in hospital longer than we need to, and it is important we get the right medication and the right dose for patients, to reduce adverse events from missed or incorrect medications. If you have the time to spend with one or two patients to help make a list or give them a printed template with their prescription, particularly those at risk with a lot of medication, it would help us all, not only in the hospital setting but in the community as a whole by reducing unnecessary burden on the health care system. There are many apps patients can download, NPS Medicinewise, MedAdvisor, MyPharmacy to list a few. Also MedsChecks is invaluable. There are also hardcopy medication lists you can order or print for patients at: https://www.nps.org.au/consumers/keeping-a-medicines-list We value everything you all do! Keep it up!
18.01.2022 Looking at the article in the Newcastle Herald today, I think it is also timely to extend our gratitude to all in the Community Pharmacy sector. From the start they kept their doors open, extended their home deliveries, continued to provide flu and other vaccinations, dealt with the myriad of extra admin with faxes and emailed prescriptions coming from the doctors providing telehealth services, AND still provided all the usual community pharmacy services to their local communities. Bravo, and thank you! Newcastle Herald
18.01.2022 Have you renewed your registration yet? Well get it done!!!!

14.01.2022 For six decades he was known as Newcastle's medicine man treating generations of families and seafarers in port. Now retired, Bob Lundy is teaching the current generation about lotions and potions of eras gone.
13.01.2022 With the ongoing Covid situation, local pharmacies may need locums, maybe at short notice. If you haven't already, maybe think if you are able to help out any local pharmacies/pharmacists with a day or part-day cover. Some of the smaller pharmacies have no regular days off or extra pharmacists. (This document always sits in under the Notes tab of our Facebook page)

08.01.2022 Some timely information
07.01.2022 Community pharmacists wanted! Effect of cost on adherence in asthma: a pharmacy based study You are invited to take part in a research study which aims to devel...op and pilot resources to improve the quality of prescribing of asthma medicines through a cross disciplinary intervention in community pharmacy. Previous research shows that cost is an important factor in people’s decisions about asthma medicines. It is also known that GPs are largely unaware that cost is an issue for their patients and that combination asthma preventer medicines are more costly for patients than single ingredient preventers. Community pharmacists are ideally placed to implement guideline-based treatment strategies to reduce asthma medicine costs for patients. The study involves a single focus group of around 2 hours duration or an interview of around 45 minutes. You can take part in this study if you are a pharmacist registered to practise in NSW. If you would like more details or to take part, please contact: Dr Sharon Davis, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, The University of Sydney Email: [email protected] Telephone: 02 91140371

05.01.2022 PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT (Updated at 11am, 3 August) Hunter New England Local Health District is urging anyone who visited the following venues to strictly isolate a...t home for 14 days from the date below and be on the lookout for COVID-19 symptoms. Get tested regardless of symptoms, but you must remain in isolation for the full 14 days even if your initial test is negative. If you do develop COVID-19 symptoms, you should be retested. - Hotel Jesmond on 29 July between 7pm and 9pm - Wallsend Diggers on 29 AND 30 July between 9pm and 11pm - Lambton Park Hotel on 30 July between 8pm until 9pm. Hunter New England Health is in contact with the management of the three venues to identify patrons who attended at these times. The venues will be deep cleaned overnight with extra attention to touch points. Hunter New England Health is still working to contact those who attended the venues at these times and they should be on the lookout for symptoms. This action is vital to limit the spread of the virus. We urge everyone to follow directions they receive about home isolation and quarantine, and maintain COVID-safe practices of physical distancing, coughing or sneezing into their elbow, and regularly washing their hands. Those wishing to be tested can organise a swab via their GP or by attending their nearest COVID-19 clinic.
