25.01.2022 PROTECTING TRADIES TOOLS Keeping your equipment safe combating the rising rate of tool theft In Victoria, the rate of tool theft is rapidly increasing with reports popping up across the state about tools being stolen from tradie’s vans and building sites. Over $44million worth of tools in 2018. We take you through some of the ways to prevent this type of theft happening to you.... Keep your tools under lock and key - Although this might seem like a no-brainer, making sure your tools are locked away is the most effective way of preventing tool theft. In 2019, there was almost 20,000 reports of stolen tools from cars. Avoid leaving tools unattended on building sites or unlocked in the back of a ute or van. If you need to leave the tools overnight, ensure the site is secured and the tools are locked in a secure cabinet Many newer model professional power tools may have security measures installed which allow them to be locked remotely via a smart device. Once these tools are disabled and locked, they are worthless to a thief. If you are thinking of upgrading your power tools and are worried about tool theft, this might be a good option to look into. Similarly, GPS trackers can also be attached to tools and act as a visible deterrent for potential thieves. Special locks and security measure can also be added to your ute or work van to make it more difficult for thieves to break in. Installing a truck/car alarm system can help you monitor your vehicle when it is unattended. Thieves appreciate a quick target, therefore installing a secure cabinet inside your vehicle with heavy duty locks and hinges can significantly increase the time it takes to get to your equipment and is a deterrent to thieves. Mark your tools and keep a record - Giving your tools a distinct marker or engraving identification may not prevent them from being stolen, however it can make it more difficult to resell. Thieves are increasingly turning to online marketplaces such as Gumtree and Facebook to sell stolen items, so having markers on your tools can help track them down. Taking photos of your tools and identifiable features can also help police track them down in the event they have been stolen. Engraving your information and potentially a reward if the tools are stolen not only lowers the resale value of tools but can also increase the chances of the equipment being returned to you if stolen. Thieves often gauge the value of tools and equipment by their appearance and their brand taking off brand names or covering familiar brand colours can help in making your tools a little less desirable to would-be thieves. Giving your tools a ‘make-under’ can also lower the chances of your tools being stolen. Some tradies have turned to spraying their tools with neon paint in order to prevent their tools being stolen. 22.01.2022 7 EASY DIY HOME SECURITY JOBS TO DO ON THE WEEKEND A home is burgled about every 20 minutes in Victoria. We’ve got 7 quick security fixes you can put on your weekend jobs’ list to make your home more burglar-proof. 1. Get rid of the hidden house key Most people have a spare key hidden somewhere outside their home. Burglars know all the hiding spots, even the not-so-common ones. So take your spare and give it to a neighbour, friend or family member you trust.... 2. Light up your entry Test exterior lights at night to check that they’re working and provide enough illumination. Consider installing flood or motion sensor lights around entries and in any dark spots. 3. Trim shrubs to cut down hiding spots Trim any shrubs and trees that are in front of windows, gates and entries so that crooks don’t have a place to hide. Aim to have a clear line of sight to the street. 4. Grow plants that burglars hate Plant thorny or prickly shrubs and plants such as cacti, native blackthorn, native raspberry or Mount Blackwood holly under windows to make your home even less appealing to burglars. 5. Stop sliding doors in their tracks Install dowel into the track of a sliding glass door or window to stop it from being forced open. Choose dowel that is thinner than the track and cut it to be around 1cm shorter, so that it fits snugly. 6. Check your locks are working effectively Do a stock-take of your door and window locks. Fix or replace any broken locks and upgrade any weak ones with stronger keyed locks or deadbolts. 6. Make it harder for crooks to see in Install one-way blinds on your windows to let natural light in but keep prying eyes out. Crime prevention information from Neighbourhood Watch Victoria

09.01.2022 If you get a call out of the blue from someone claiming to be from Neighbourhood Watch Victoria, asking you to buy advertising or pay money it’s not us! We do...n’t do phone or online fundraising and we don’t sell ads into magazines or handbooks. Occasionally our local NHW groups might ask their local businesses for sponsorship to produce their community newsletters, but that's it. So if you get a cold call like this, here’s what we suggest you do: 1. Don’t give them any money or commit to a sales agreement. 2. Ask for their name and the organisation they are working for, then source a phone number for them yourself, independently. 3. If they won’t give it to you hang up. 4. Note the date, time and brief details of the call and send them to us, via www.nhw.com.au/contact or by private message here.

03.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM SGT. DEAN PARRELLO, OFFICER IN CHARGE, PORTARLINGTON POLICE STATION Coffee with a Cop was recently held in Drysdale, with thanks to Café Zoo for hosting. There was a great turn out and wonderful to meet some of the locals. The main theme of the day was ‘hoon drivers’. It has been brought to our attention that hoons are becoming a nuisance in the area. We have gathered some intelligence and have already spoken to some whom we believe are responsible. The ne...xt phase is to run a targeted operation aimed at enforcement. This will be happening shortly and will be a joint effort with divisional resources. For all residents who may have information for us, please report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. For those who witness or hear any hoon driving, please call 000 and the nearest police unit will be dispatched. The next Coffee with a Cop will be held in St.Leonards. It is planned for the 27th of May, 2021 at Salty Cow. This date is still to be confirmed so keep a look out for flyers. Our Facebook page Eyewatch Geelong Police Service Area will also have the details. Come along and just say hi, or let us know about your concerns. My topic for this newsletter relates to online fraud. This is becoming a regular occurrence with offenders becoming quite clever and tricky, preying on the vulnerable. Ensure your passwords are complex and are not the same for every platform. In particular, make sure your banking passwords are different to any other password. If you receive an email or text message that does not seem quite right, do not open it, or click on any links. If it is from a bank/Paypal etc, you can be assured they will not be sending you anything where you have to click links to update your details or similar. If you are unsure, hit that delete button and call your bank. Fraudsters also call victims purporting to be from the Tax Office or financial institutions. Again, do not provide any information over the phone. It is your hard-earned money so keep it safe. Lastly, I would like to provide you some information on great arrests. We had a call from the public relating to suspicious behaviour in St.Leonards. Police were patrolling close by and as a result, arrested a burglar inside a house. The offender was remanded in custody. We also received information regarding drug cultivation in Portarlington, with two search warrants being executed and drugs seized. This is just some of the great work my team are doing. Remember, if you wish to report something that is happening and need police, call 000. If you wish to report a crime that has previously happened, you can report it to the Police Assistance Line on 131444. They will take a report on our behalf and send it to us to investigate. Thanks for reading, Sergeant Dean Parrello Officer in Charge, Portarlington Police Station
