21.01.2022 A long overdue Dandenong Community Hub will bring a heart to the old towns centre, its supporters say. Mayor Jim Memeti, in a unanimously supported motion on 14 September, declared that it is our turn after similar hubs opened or planned in Noble Park, Dandenong North, Springvale and Keysborough South. Dandenong has facilities that are really ageing"... The almost 10-year paralysis that this Council has seen with regards to this project needs to end. Over the next nine months, $80,000 concept plans will be drawn for an intergenerational hub with childrens services, informal meeting spaces and activity spaces. A possible location is the Clow Street precinct near the Dandenong Market and former council offices. The building is expected to be of a similar scale to Keysborough Souths at a cost of about $10-15 million. A feasibility study showed strong community support. It would cater for a mix of ages in a growing Dandenong population, forecast to swell from 37,000 to 52,000 by 2030. That includes children between 0-4 doubling to about 5000, and a similar number of residents over 65. The council has also identified the need for a welcoming, supportive community place for young people, especially migrants. And to help them navigate education and employment pathways. Dandenong Community Association member Silvia Mastrogiavanni says for years, Dandenong had a dead centre. It had been disjointed between focal points such as Lonsdale Street, Dandenong Plaza and Dandenong Market. The hub would be its new heart, Ms Mastrogiavanni said. It was a place of connection for residents to mix and mingle and to meet new friends. Somewhere to learn a language, do a hobby, run an exercise or dance class. While we have this darned pandemic its illustrated why connection is so important to the human spirit and to our health. Cr Matthew Kirwan had steered through budget bids for the feasibity study and concept design in the past two years. He said Cr Memetis motion ensured a fully integrated, intergenerational hub and not a version that excludes childrens services. It is only when you put children services and informal and formal meeting activity spaces together do you get a true community heart, a place that the whole community calls home. Having served Dandenong for eight years it is a great community but a fragmented community we need to bring it together. SOURCE: Star Dandenong Journal

17.01.2022 ALERT-KEYSBOROUGH LOCATION: Azure Crescent, Keysborough DATE: 19th September 2020 TIME: 2:57am... This incident has been reported to Police. Its not only crimes that should be reported to Police. Suspicious behaviour should also be reported. Just before 3am, during curfew, a masked man was captured walking past the residents home, he stopped and looked into the sports car belonging to their neighbour which was parked in the driveway before walking away... Sure this man could have been innocently admiring the vehicle while being outside during curfew with no doubt a good and valid reason for walking around, but there is also a chance this wasnt the case at all... This area in Keysborough is experiencing high levels of break-ins to both residents homes and vehicles. Please make sure that your vehicles are locked and no belongings are left inside. Stay vigilant and keep looking out for your neighbours. Stay safe everyone.

17.01.2022 I know some people in the area have already been swooped... I found out there is an app where you log where the swooping magpies are... ill try to find it and post the link in the comments... In the meantime, enjoy this informative magpie swooping video ... Happy Monday everyone!

17.01.2022 Ordinary people, extraordinary spirit. June 9, 2021 is Thank A First Responder Day. Join us in saying two simple words: Thank you!! First responders. Ordinary p...eople, just like us. They have families, commitments, homes to go to at the end of their working day. They’ve got dinner to make, shopping to do, bills to pay. But unlike us they dedicate every day to helping save others. Whether it’s the firefighters who battled the infernos that wrought havoc on our nation in 2020, the paramedics who respond every day to emergency situations, the marine rescue teams, police and lifesavers working to find missing persons in the water, or the SES men and women who leave their own families at home to ensure another family has a roof over their heads, we owe every one of them a huge debt of gratitude (as well as the families who support them through it all). Yet many of Australia’s 300,000 first responders receive little thanks for what they do. Let's start saying "Thank you!" to them more often!! If want to have kids do some activity this site has got Activity Sheets as well that can keep your child away from screen during this lockdown. https://firstresponderday.com.au/education-materials/

13.01.2022 +61444444444 is legit If you received an SMS from this number, its legit! Its connected to our national emergency alert system.... You can find further info on their website: http://www.emergencyalert.gov.au/ When you look in the FAQ you will find reference to the phone number in one of the questions asking if you can call the number if you missed an alert (the answer is no, by the way). My suspicion is that with the recent outbreak in Hallam, they are trying to contain any possible spread in our area by encouraging people to get tested.

13.01.2022 Victoria Police proudly supports #NationalChildProtectionWeek Police play an important role in keeping children safe. But so do you. For children to thrive, we ...need to come together as a community to put the needs of children first not just this week, but every week. Not all children grow up in environments that are safe. Child abuse takes many forms; it can be neglect, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, or family violence. Victoria Police have experienced detectives to investigate these crimes. To speak with one of them, contact your nearest SOCIT: go.vic.gov.au/Vnv6p1 If a child is in immediate danger, always call Triple Zero (000).

12.01.2022 In a bid to boost Covid-struck retailers, Greater Dandenong will look at encouraging more tables and chairs on footpaths, says mayor Jim Memeti. Meanwhile, the council has launched a Business Grants Program offering up to $5000 to Covid-affected small and medium-sized businesses. As part of a Mental Health Foundation Australia webinar on 10 September, Cr Memeti said there was a need to cut red tape and look outside the square to reinvigorate retail strips.... One possibility was allowing more outdoor settings at restaurants in the Afghan Bazaar precinct in Thomas Street. We might lose some car spaces (but) weve never been under pressure like this before. Cr Memeti said such initiatives had begun in Europe and could be employed locally. Other support includes free applications for outdoor dining permits for two years. The permits apply to businesses wishing to introduce or increase tables and chairs for on-street dining. The councils free parking trial in Lonsdale Street will continue. A council taskforce of local peak body representatives and industry experts will also be formed to lobby state and federal governments on behalf of local business. Cr Memeti said Council had worked to support local business since its initial $4 million relief package in March. This included $2 million rent relief to commercial tenants in council-owned buildings as well as Dandenong Market vendors. This Business Grants Program aims to complement the other, non-financial business recovery measures currently provided by Council. We know that so many of our small to medium businesses are going through some extremely challenging times, but we hope this provides them with some hope. The grants open on Friday 18 September. Applicants must show that the grants will assist them retaining employees or support their businesss sustainability during the pandemic. The council has also been listing local food businesses still open during Covid-19 through its Great Bites Open for Business initiative. Since March, the councils material aid program had distributed 125 tonnes of food. More than 3000 people were being fed a week, and demand was increasing, Cr Memeti said. Fifty families who were self-isolating due to Covid-positive tests had also received food parcels. During the lockdown, people were flocking outdoors for daily exercise and on the councils online arts exhibition. The websites visitor numbers swelled by 4000 per cent, Cr Memeti said. As part of a Tech Savvy project, aged services clients were receiving iPads with Zoom and FaceTime training to help them keep in touch with their families and friends while in isolation. We may be living with restrictions for some time. We need to find the new normal, Cr Memeti said. We need to reach out to those that need us the most. 08.01.2022 FIRST DATE DISASTER First dates are stressful. Sometimes even embarrassing. Particularly if you decide to drive your new lady friend whilst drug affected and without a licence - ending the night without a car on the side of the road.... Unfortunately for this new couple on their first date, the driver saw the flashing police lights in his rear-view and confessed to his new lady friend that he didn’t have a licence. Not only was he keeping his disqualified licence a secret, but it was the habit of smoking methylamphetamine prior to the big occasion that further landed him in hot water, returning a positive result to the oral fluid test. The 27-year-old Pakenham man’s vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1038 and the pair were left to recommence their date on foot. I wonder if there will be a second date? #OpCompass #firstdatedisaster

03.01.2022 WARNING - ONLINE MARKETPLACE THEFTS Police are reminding people to take extra precautions when selling and buying items online after recent thefts across Casey..., Cardinia and Greater Dandenong. Victims have had vehicles stolen after allowing prospective purchasers to test drive their car, only for them to never return, or fake online payments have been made but the payment doesn’t clear. If you’re thinking of buying or selling something online make sure you do it safely check out these safety tips: - Look into the buyer or seller before meeting up. Social media pages that have recently been created or only have a few followers may be indications they are fake. - Instead of meeting at your house, meet in a public place where there are lots of people around and plenty of CCTV. - Don’t go alone if possible, take a friend or family member with you. - Communicate with the person verbally rather than via text/messaging so you can gauge if there is any suspicious behaviour going on (you can generally judge that by the way people speak to you). - Do not accept screenshots as proof of payment. - Do not allow a prospective buyer to test drive your car without you AND a friend/family member accompanying them.
